Lol at everyone telling a reviewer his review is wrong because he isn't playing it the way you play. There are lots of different types of gamers, he is one, so his review is as valid as someone who had played for 6 months. Also "Review In Progress"

Yes there are different types of gamers and that's exactly why I shouldn't do a review for WoW and he shouldn't do a review for Darkfall.

Darkfall is about risk in a harsh world, hes about bending over at the sight of a player.

Get a clue.

Actually his play is far more typical of play in games like this than what you are thinking, which is exactly why a veteran Darkfall player should not be doing this review.

It is a big step going from many of these themepark MMO's to game like Darkfall.  Hardcore Darkfall players are few and far between.  For Darkfall to be successful, it is going to have to pull casual players looking for more of a challenge.  So that is exactly why this person is a good choice, they have the right perspective.

Like I said before, the reviewer needs to realize that the solo play they are used to in a themepark works does not work well in a game like Darkfall.

After 2 weeks you've only just now left the safezone... You've only experienced like 1% of what the game has to offer.

Ripper, love the man, but he's a bit biased when it comes to Darkfall.  I recruited George to do the review, because he's fresh into the game and hasn't played the betas or been rabid about the original.

That's exactly what i was going to say.. Good choice.. but i think he needs to put a bit more time into it.

Also to get a lot of prowess point.. get into a guild and go on a fishing trip.. sit semi afk fishing on the boat while playing another game.. job done loads of prowess points.. or just afk chopping wood while playing another game probally the safest option..

AV broke the game by adding safe zones and allowing people to skill up in them and craft in them.. they should have restricted the amount you can lvl in safe zones and they should have limited the crafting to only basic items... now there is no need to ever leave the safe zones until you have maxed your character out, Sure its the boring way of doing it but its what most people will end up doing.

If Ripper X did the review, he would be praising Darkfall as the one, true MMORPG.

And so what if his preferred game type isn't Darkfall? He's doing a review - he's putting the time in. His review is authentic versus someone who plays the game hardcore, has followed it for years, DF1, ect, and plays like 60 hours a week.

Sometimes it is good to get the perspective of someone who does not think like you, on something. It opens up new avenues and new ideas, things you didn't see before with your bias.

That is why, for Darkfall, this is the perfect reviewer.

That's all nice and dandy, but I've more or less given up on other reviewers then yourself, when the guy you hired to review Mortal Online clearly never even left the starting town of Tindrem, and never even tried crafting or tested how it was to be in a clan etc.

This guy you have testing DFUW only have 2k prowess from 20 hours of playing? Jfc. I think I get more if I log in and just stand still. That's more or less how bad 2k prowess are from 20 hours of gaming is in my eyes. Your hired reviewers need to dig deeper to the games, and with DFUW, pray to GOD that they aren't playing when all these rollbaks are happening.

I recommend that the reviewer join the biggest clan possible.

In this way, the reviewer is more likely to experience the full range of things that the game has to offer.

In addition, weight of numbers should mean that it won't matter that the reviewer only has 2k prowess points (because you'll be zerging the enemy).

I disagree - the safe zones are required until people feel comfortable enough to leave the safe zone. Otherwise, there would be lots of rage-and-quit threads on the forums.

The safe zones protect new and weak players from getting repeatedly griefed and ganked.

Yeah, it was a good review. The best way to review this game though, is to go to their forums and watch at how it is universally hated by their own players.

Says alot about a game when you see "This game sucks!" as a thread, find it not closed, and people agreeing. I've never seen that on a Official forum for a game before.

Spot on he is doing the review from the perspective of a person who has NEVER played the game.  And if you never have played the game this is what one should expect - the tutorial is barely a tutorial and does not give info on the deeper aspects of the game.  So a new person is stuck with trying to figure it out on their own with a crappy UI and other stuff.

For a brand new player he is 100% spot on with the review thus far.  The people complaining here are Vets and already played the first game and since this game has not changed much already know their way around this game.  Newsflash - this guy has never played the game and hopefully his review will point out to AV how unfriendly the game is to new players.  It is nowhere close to a good experience in teaching a new player like other MMO's and AV needs to see that.

I've been playing online games since before game-sponsored forums were commonplace and I can honestly say that if you were to review any MMO based on the population and attitude of its forum trolls then they would all would be recognized as a universal failure.

I can agree that there is no right or wrong way to play a game, however mister Dimmock is playing the game  from the perspective of an AFK harvester.

The above is my personal opinion. Anyone displaying a view contrary to my opinion is obviously WRONG and should STHU. (neener neener)

My advice to the reviewer would be to listen to the advice of players in the game. Completing PvE Feats is a good way to progress. At 2k Prowess, I suggest Elementals (not Ice Elementals, they are a bit harder than the others).

Basically, if you closely inspect the PvE mob kill Feats, you will notice there are different "tiers". The easiest mobs award 71 Prowess for their Master level Feat, and it goes up from there. The Elementals award about 1200 Prowess for completing the Master Feat, and times two for the first Elemental Feat you complete, giving you ~2400 Prowess for just those two Feats, plus Prowess from mob kills, plus Prowess from skinning Feats, plus Prowess from completing hidden Feats such as Fiend Slayer (elementals are Fiend-level mobs).

The above is one way of getting your Prowess, and after that you move on to other targets. I should mention you want to spend your Prowess in your farming efficiency, in other words, your raw damage output. So if you play a Skirmisher, you will want your Prowess to mainly go into Dexterity and the matching Booster. More damage equals faster killing, which means faster Feat completion, which means faster Prowess gain.

Finally, I highly recommend you join a clan, any clan will do, but if you're looking to learn a lot about the game for the purpose of the review, joining a "known" Darkfall clan would be recommended.

Really? What games have you played? Let's not go too far. Check D3 forums posts 1 month or so after its release. Check it now too.

D3 is far worse than Darkfall when comes to forums post, and we are talking about Blizzard Vs Av (Is that a fair ?)

Now let's talk about DF:UW. I'll not hide that i'm a huge DF fan, and i try to spend some time defending it, because the game deserves. I do not check forums or write post while playing, i do it at work, because in my free Game time i'm too busy improving my DFUW skills.

The huge problem in DF is not in the game, is not at the company or the developers.

DF say and it is a hardcore game and it is. DF1 was much more but, definitely, it killed the game cuz it wasn't, for sue, new players friendly. If you can't bring new player the game will die, so they brought to DFUW: "Classes", "Safe Zone", "Prowess Points".

Some old veteran players hate AV for that, but they  are too selfish because before AV shutdown DF1 the game wasn't fun due to the low population, not because the game sucks. The low population main reason was the gap between veterans and new players, and in DFUW you can close that gap in 1 month hardcore playing or 2 months playing in a regular base.

With that main changes from DF1 to DFUW we still can see a lot of hate posts. But here comes my opinion.

A lot of players from WoW, GW2, etc have been trying DFUW... The majority of theses players came to darkfall because of the full loot, and Hardcore pvp. They farmed in WoW, GW2 for gear and lvl's before do some raids or battefields, while they were farming nobody engage them and messed with their progress. (DFUW is different, you farm, you kill and you die).

After that they went to RvR and PvP and killed some low lvls, some low gear, they ruled for some hours in these games, before came another high lvl end game geared player and kill them. But they got bored, because the PvP and RvR were pointless, no feeling, anyone could try to attack them without fear, and when they killed everybody, nothing substantial happened.

And then came Darkfall Unholy Wars, the promise of Open World Full Loot PvP. They thought: " Nice! Now i'll kill a lot of players like GW2; WoW and their loot will be mine. Lets play it". But they forgot that the DFUW lovers and core players, already played a lot of GW;WoW;GW2; The Secret World... Etc, rule these games, got bored and went play something else.

So they met ,while playing DFUW, a lot of player more hardcore than them, with clans much more solid and hardcore like nothing that they ever saw, and the dream of killing everyone and getting rich was destroyed, they cannot kill 3v1 like in the others games, they are losing all the crafted gear, they are complaining about not being able playing solo, they are complaining about not being able to leaving the same area.WTF?

Is DFUW are hardcore game or not? What were you guys expecting, some hugs outside the safe area? To be the king of Agon by youself?  While out there have clans like Vamp, LoD, Zealots, CoE, Blood (Having a lot o fun) where players called sick to work for 1 week to play the game? Wake up! Darkfall is not a game to play alone, not at all! Even the best DFUW player would have a terrible experience being ganked and killed if he was playing alone since DFUW releases.

Darkfall is about team play, society, siege, war, open world, politics, fear and adrenaline. You will never know who will be coming to your city, or to you PvE spot. Your loot is available to everybody who kills you, and ppl are greedy.

Some clans are recruiting new players, helping them, you can't login and walk around the world without nothing happens to you, DFUW is not a them park, is wild west, outlaw. I played DF1 since its release and i'm playing DFUW everytime i can, i got killed countless times, lost countless bags of gear, but since i'm not playing alone and have a solid clan, i killed countless of times, and looted countless bags of gear. I must admit in that balance i'm with a positive score, and i having a lot o fun.

Have days i'm tried to do some PvE groups, but because of the high traffic in that particular area it became a PvP group we killed more players than Monsters (We didn't looked for a sigle player, all of our killes came to our spawn and tried to kill us). But i was not alone, i was in a group of 5 players.

So for all players who will be trying DFUW, clan up.

To the review if he read my Wall of Text: Clan up. Do some PvE group, evetualy you'll get pvp. Kill grungrocs with 5 ppl and you'll know what i mean. Do some raids. Pls, do it before the final review.

I've read through all of the comments here and I just want to make a few points.

For starters, this review is good in the sense that it does show a perspective of someone brand new to the game and this series. To that I commend George and Bill.

However, on the other hand this game truly begins to shine when you engage in open world PvP, especially clan (or alliance) vs clan.

I myself am a veteran of the first Darkfall as well as games such as Ultima Online and those around that era. I have to say that the siege I was in a few days ago where it was 50v30 and which the battle lasted for over an hour was BY FAR one of the most intense, adrenaline and FUN filled experiences of my long MMO career.

To George and Bill; THAT is the kind of thing you must experience in order to truly get a good feel for how amazing this game is when it comes to PvP combat. After all, this is a hardcore PvP MMO.

Thanks and take care.

Patch Notes May 9th: Skinning
Success rate changed to 100% at all times. They had 75% (at Skill 1) to 95% (at Skill 100).

I bet that patch note is more infuriating than losing you stuff.

ROFL

Come one dude... You have 2K prowess and you spend most of it maxing skinning??? Did you talk to anyone else? Why the hell are you trying to make everything yourself and play an MMO like a single player game?

Get in some groups and do some pvp so you can do a real review.  AND FOR THE LOVE OF GOD get some advice on how to build your character... If I'm reading this right you must have put about 1400 of your 2000 prowess into SKINNING!!! That is the dumbest possible thing you could do.  They even just nerfed the raising of the skinning skill lol.

The fist thing ANY character should do is buy your first two stat boosters.  If your a skirmisher that would be DEX, if your a warrior that would be STR.

It doesn't seen like your trying to review this game very well because from what I've read you have just wasted a lot of your time.  ITS AN MMO get some advice and talk to someone who knows how to play it...

Just from reading this editors reviews thus far of Darkfall I get the STRONG suspicion he's a WoW player or game similar thats use to the "hand holding" mechanics that most games follow these days.  Won't be shocked if his review is low because he can't handle the game.
