There's a reason you can't spell Deadline without the word 'dead'.

You tell me one thing that contributes to the 'WoW formula' and I'll tell you at least two games that came before WoW that featured the exact same thing. People need to stop using the term 'WoW Clone' when they don't even realize that WoW never had unique features upon release to begin with.

GW2 feels like a single player game in which sometimes you see other players.  Like Dark Souls.

LOL, only fools are those who thinks that content = raids, becouse thats the only thing ppl might miss and there are lot of ppl who are tired of concept that raids = only end game content. I have no intention ever play game where end game = raids and i know im not alone. You wanna raid ? fine, but stop spreading bullshit.

Well, he also talks about mounts and gear progression, where the last part is about end game.

After you turned 80 there's no longer any progression. Your character will never be weaker or stronger as it is. For many players this was not enough.

You do realize that the $15/mo subs are only a fraction of what they're counting as subs, yes? They include the asian time cards where people play for pennies per hour even though they're not subscriptions in the sense we're used to. So that & mil. plus number is a bit exaggerated. Not that that's highly relevent, just a point of fact.

GW2 is actually slowly climbing in player base during the peroid most MMOs face declines.

It is a fact that GW2 is contunually making improvements. Can't say how many circles Blizzard is running around in since I quit WoW before Cataclysm.

WoW's sub numbers are very exaggerated.. I had 2 WoW accounts active at any given time when I played.. Most of my friends and family also had at least 2 active WoW accounts, and that's not including the month where they decided to create other new accounts just to get that stupid mount, or give other characters instant level 80.. So, I'd wager the 8 or so million subscribers they have are really maybe 2 million "actual people",, and that's just a guess...

8 years later, most mmorpg's wouldn't have 90% of the playerbase WoW still has today... Whether anyone wants to admit it or not, that's very impressive..

As for Guild Wars 2,,,,, I remember how most people overhyped the game so much, their expectations were to high for it to live up to.. I beta tested GW2, and I even bought it.. I was hoping to see some improvements, but unfortunately the game just wasn't interesting enough to me,, not like Ultima Online, Everquest, DAOC, or WoW was.. GW2 was never even in the same league as those games, and in my honest opinion, I don't believe it will ever live up to the legendary status of those 4 games..

GW2 was released just 8 months ago.. It's still technically a new game... At launch it did very well, then 60% of the people who bought the game quickly realized how uninteresting and dull the game is.. What did they do?? They left to go back to other games like WoW, or chose to play something else.. Why?? Because most f2p MMO's aren't on the same level as P2P MMO's.. F2P MMO's are nothing more than a quick rollercoaster ride that ends fast.. But there are some people out there who do enjoy riding those rollercoasters again and again until they throw up, lol.. It will happen for them too,, but it takes a little longer for them to realize their stomach can't handle anymore of the same monotonous ride.. :/

With that said, comparing a legendary game like WoW to GW2 is like comparing oatmeal to a 7 course dinner filled with Lobster, Steak, Turkey, Ham, etc etc etc..

The numbers don't lie.. WoW started fairly well, then began to grow and grow after each month.. Whereas, GW 2 started fairly high and in under a year lost 60% of it's original playerbase... I'm sorry, but that's not good,, and I'm not very good at math, lol..

Where did you get that number?

According to Xfire and Raptr, GW2 lost 60% to 85% of their players since launch.

lol - you must be new here.

Forgot your favorite WoW lost 40% of its "players" (or 70% since MoP little earlier) at the same time and you shun xfire and raptr because they are innacurate?

If I agreed with you we'd both be wrong.

@Sukiyaki: that video in your sig showing the differences between WoW clone style combat and GW2 combat is fantastic :-)

Agreed. A much needed improvement.

If I recall correctly, XFire and Raptr track concurrent users, not unique logins. In that case, those numbers are saying something else than what you're reading into them.

They also track total hours played by members that are logged in. Not that I am defending the use of those numbers as a tool. They are only good for showing general trends within those communities.

Got bored after 1 month, for me this game is dead meat, Since WoW(played for 1 month or so), there is no MMO that gives me a reason to play it for more than 2 months.

My record in MMOs WoW-clone was Aion: 2 months. And the least was SWTOR: 2 weeks.

Obs: Played Lineage 1 for 6-7 years.

I'm pretty sure that the GW2 devs were set to break the GW1 mold, not the WoW mold. It is mostly players that have to break their own mental WoW (or insert any other game) mold. Because this is what causes them to expect exactly the same mechanics as in WoW. Their expectations have been formed by the WoW formula. This is what happens if you have trouble thinking outside the box :p

Anyway, it is (ex-) WoW raiders that expect the crazy gear inflation grind and raids, not former GW1 players or GW2 devs. But with the GW2 devs wanting to tap the WoW type MMO market share, they introduced some mild form of gear progression and high max lvl. Which (imo) resulted into a mediocre hybrid of playerskill and gearbased MMO. With as result that it doesn't seem to cater enough to both type of players. At least not with long lasting appeal.

Fortunately (for Arenanet), casual MMO players fit in most molds, so they are fine with this. GW2 is polished, looks very good and has a nice PVE experience. I suspect that many players lvl 1 or maybe 2 toons and then let the game rest for a while. You can debate whether this is a good thing or bad thing.

People talk about the WoW formula as if it's one ingredient that makes the game what it is.

In fact WoW is what it is because of many things, a collection of elements.

And there is no game out there that does exactly what WoW does.

WoW - grind for gear with stats.

GW2 - grind for gear for the look

WoW - has other gear you can get but the ultimate goal is the "best in slot"

Gw2 - has other gear with ok looks but the ultimate goal is the ones with sparkly effects (precursors)

WoW - show up to enough raids and eventually RNG will bless you with the item you want.

GW2 - show up to enough world boss kills and RNG will bless you with a precursor.

WoW - raids are on a timer.

GW2 - world bosses rewards can only be got once per day

WoW - grind for different types of currency to buy items

GW2 - grind for different types of currency to buy items
