That is what the whole Fire and Ice living story is going to do.

You can spin it anyway that you want, but the reality of the matter is that the population is way less. I don't hate the game, and I still play it occasionally. But let's be real, it isn't growing.

My personal ancecdotal experience has been: huge launch spike, numbers taper off in the fall (MoP is released), huge numbers come back around Christmas. Numbers may be dropping off now, I have no way of knowing. But just yesterday I was answering questions from a new player in starting zone on an alt.

Accoridng to this article from two months ago (six months after launch) the game is still growing: http://www.ign.com/articles/2013/03/07/how-guild-wars-2-plans-to-survive. Known facts do not match quoted assertion.

You have no idea what they mean when they say that. And sure, lots of people came back for the events, but it is obvious that the number of people is nowhere near what it was at launch. I will say that the population has stabilized like most other games, but it really isn't growing.....

GW2 managed to make me quit the game and never want to play it again in beta. Wow took at least a couple years after to accomplish that.

So ya, I guess they did break the mold.

You stay sassy!

they kinda hooked me in beta. game looked really cool and that survival game gave me hope that there would actually be unique feeling content in the game .. yea I was wrong.

LFD tools are great for cramming people into content, but quality > quantity.
I am, usually on the sandbox .. more "hardcore" side of things, but I also do just want to have fun. So lighten up already :)

GW2 broke WoW formula, thats why its still successful 6 months after launch opposed to all other WoW clones.

It really is a refreshment after 8-9 very dry years.

Like every MMO I came in and got what I expected, then hung around hoping they would implement what I longed for but they never did and now I've lost interest. Consequences, meaningful PVP, housing! The last thing I wanted was MORE scripted story stuff, I want to make my own story!

The coolest thing I've seen GW2 do is the end of beta event where a dragon flew over a zone, transformed everyone into demon things, and like a plague they mauled other players and turned them into demon things too. When I saw that I thought OMG this will be great!....and they have done nothing like it since...

I remember seeing a quote about how a player in a cave in one part of the world will do something that unlocks something for a player somewhere else...it made the entire game sound like 1 big open world of intrigue and explore...not exactly how it functions.

I have pretty good idea what this means (from IGN article I linked to earlier in thread):

Aside from managing to shift over 3 million copies in the six months since it launched, Johanson also informs me that Guild Wars 2 has bucked one of the main MMO trends by seeing player numbers continue to rise during what would usually be a post-launch slump. The six weeks following Christmas saw increasing numbers of people eager to explore the world of Tyria, making Guild Wars 2 one of very few MMOs to launch, settle into its core playerbase and then actually start to grow again (EVE Online would be perhaps the only other prominent example of this unusual trend).

What about this is unclear in any way? You claim its obvious there are fewer players and game is not growing. Yet its not at all obvious to me as I still encounter new players in game.

So, going back to actual thread, I guess the game has this in common with WoW: still growing months after launch.

Dude, it's obvious the population has shrunk by 45% over the past 3 weeks.  You can't argue with obvious.

I like GW2 but it has no staying power. What can they do to fix this..... It's a NICE place to visit but I don't feel the need to live there! LOL

There are few jumping puzzles that just do that. Finish 1 place to unlock another ... somewhere xD

Increasing numbers of people..... you mean the ones that got it for Christmas or came back to do the events..... Seriously.  That statement says nothing.  I never said that there aren't new players. I can go to SWOTR or AoC and find new players everyday. The game population isn't growing though.....

Going to need a link for that! Just because you say it's not growing doesn't mean it isn't. /shrug

Why do these threads always end up with insecure people terrified they aren't playing the "#1" game anymore, and other people antagonizing them.

Warcraft is still #1 guys. 2.5 million people can't be wrong.

One thing that drives me crazy is how they blatantly shorted us storage and offered more for cash. That seemed shady.

I agree... 2.5 million people... give or take 10 million can be wrong.

Honestly... if game populations mean that much to people, why not just add 40 million fake accounts to the sub numbers?  I play a game that has 40 million active subs... I log in and I'm the only one in game.  I'm so happy that I am playing the #1 MMO of the century!

Wow, I never thought of it that way, you've changed my view on the importance of population in mass-multiplayer games.

Just about everything is different from WoW.

  • Combat
  • Questing
  • Dungeons
  • PvP
  • PvE
  • Skills
  • Trait/Talents
  • etc.
Whether or not it's good or bad, is ultimately up to the individual player.

Also means 11.5 million folks moved on from WOW ....kind of makes you wonder if they can't be wrong ?
