That's one of the things I like least about it, if I'm mid swing when an enemy starts a cast, I physically can't get out of the red zone in time - in GW2 you could dodge out.

For clerics it is: Shift + direction or double tap in the direction

Not sure if everyone gets a dodge.

Until we see where Cryptic are heading in terms of updating the game and whatnot.. it's impossible to know.

I played a bit of the NW open beta. It was pretty good. Nice actiony combat. One of the quests turned out to be a surprised party for me ... made me LoL.

I have only completed a few story instances, i am hoping the story instances will have more scripting/puzzle & events, but i suppose i will find out.

Still both have their pros and cons and I can never really believe in the 'which is better' argument'. The most you can get is an opinion off it, even if listing out flaws in the end its up to the player which is better.

It's all a matter of taste I guess. I like being able to move when I cast spells and Neverwinter locks me in place as a cleric. I can't say anything for other classes, but in GW2 I could cast on the run and to me that allows more freedom. /shrug

For me both have their strengths and weaknesses. But if I had to choose one at this very moment it would be NWO. And it's not all about graphics, combat systems or cash shops. Let me explain:

  • Character
  • Progression
  • Intergration
  • Purpose
When ever I pick up a new mmorpg these are the 4 things that create the biggest impression on me. If a game can hook me when it comes to these 4 things, I'll be logging in frequently to play. So let's take a look:

Character creation for both games have very generous options, but NWO has more races, more options to tweak your avatar and more importantly the potential for even more races and classes in the future. Besides, I'm a old school PnP D&D player and just being able to roll for my ability scores (even if it's capped at 18 sans bonuses) was enough for me. Also backstory, picking a deity and picking a hometown are all present in both games.

Edge: Neverwinter

Progression in GW2 is at best restrained. This is because of their decision to go with the auto adjusting system for their zones. It's suppose to provide a steady challenge for players even if you revisit old areas. But for me it's just a handicap by making me feel my character isn't getting any stronger and never will. Add to that the lack of gear progression and I really have to ask myself, do I really want to play a mmo where being level 7 feels exactly the same as being level 80?

Progression in NWO is more akin to a traditional sense of leveling. You get specific questlines that open up new options for your charatcer. Whether that be companions, mounts or hirelings for crafting. Milestones levels are set 10 , 20, 30..and so on. And every time you level a reminder pops up letting you know you have new points, skills and/or abilities. New gear slots opens up as you get higher in level as well. Is it perfect, not a chance, but I can say being level 7 does NOT feel the same as being level 20 (my current level).

Edge: Neverwinter

Intergration of my character to his surrounding helps me to get absorbed into the game. This is the time when you are so lost into what you are doing that time is blazing by. It's the little things that you have to keep an eye on that pull you back in. Praying to your deity each hour, assigning new task to your hirelings, sending your companion off to train. These are some of the things that help make my avatar feel like he's not just in the game world, but also a part of it. None of these things existed in GW2. You either fought or crafted. I don't have to fight to craft in NWO.

Intergration also plays a part when preparing for a dungeon delve as tools and potions can be handy to have, but not necessary. And whether it's part of a solo questline or a group run, it requires more than just barreling through to get to the end. There are nooks and crannies everywhere and having a sharp eye for details could lead to more rewards. Some dungeon rooms have multiple levels and hidden rooms can be behind bookcases, hanging ragged sheets or false walls. The multi level dungeons is what I loved the most about GW2 as well. But when it comes to making your character feel like he's an actual part of the world he's in, GW2 is not on the same level as NWO.

Edge: Neverwinter

Purpose of my character in GW2 was kinda unfocused. With the ability to switch weapons, skills and points on the fly, combat really felt like a huge convoluted mess to me. Positioning meant nothing beyond avoiding damage. And I know part of that is because the holy trinity is not supported. But the other part of that, for me, was also because skills didn't feel like they were very effective. Maybe it was the overuse of translucent, pastel laced special effects that decorated every skill use.

Honestly, I think it was moreso of what I was perceiving a particular skill should look (and feel) like as I watched the action on the screen and what was actually unfolding. For example, in both games I play a sword and board, heavy armor class. And while my guardian in GW2 looked the part, most of his skills consisted of light blue bubbles, stationary ground effects, translucent walls and glowie weapons. And while he did his part, it really didn't feel like I was guarding anything.

While in NWO my guardian fighter not only looks the part but he taunts enemies for a few seconds grabbing their attention (E key), marks targets to increase aggro (TAB), hold up his shield to take heavy blows (SHIFT) while he shuffles his feet (WASD) to position himself on the rear or flank to score extra damage on that enemy (LFT MOUSE BUTTON) and charges other enemies (Q key) to stun (RGT MOUSE BUTTON), knockback (1 key) or interupt (2 key) them from hurting know...guard. This guy is not tanking he's guarding. And all of that on the fly.

Edge: Neverwinter

GW2 socialist.

I love Neverwinter, but GW2 is a much better game overall in every single way (except healing, my Cleric rules).  But those are only the ways they can even be compared.  They're very different games, and I enjoy them both.  Thankfully, since they are B2P and F2P respectively, I can enjoy them both simultaneously.

Better story so far has GW2... Even tho D&D is huge and has huge lore I just don't see it so far in the game, while GW2 has 2 books which describe what happened between GW1 and GW2 and then the games personal story which leads you trough the world (if you want to play the PS,ofc)...

Combat in Neverwinter is generic and I've seen it before, locks you in place and offers crosshair but it's nothing new, while GW2 combat is miles away from everything we've seen so far and it's fun to play and it works good when you learn how to play your class.

Now the really tough quesition is the latter one, because somehting I might play for months someone will play for weeks and get trough the content much quicker. Also there's always a matter of someones taste and character so it's hard to say how long a game will last for someone.

Neverwinter all the way! AD&D>GW2

Don't be terrorized! You're more likely to die of a car accident, drowning, fire, or murder! More people die every year from prescription drugs than terrorism LOL!

I do like NW so far .. but it is NOT AD&D. They changes the mechanics so much that it is so far away from AD&D that i regard it as a different system.

Varies from person to person I imagine.

Story? Probably Guild Wars. Neverwinter overarching story is a bit weak, its more about the individual stories the quests tell.

Combat? Neverwinter. Much more fun. Less skills, but feels more strategic. Trinity makes it less chaotic, but can bring imbalance in PvP.

World? GW2 by a long shot. Neverwinter has great locations, but its not a world like GW2 has created.

Longevity? Neverwinter. The foundry will make far more content than the GW2 folks can keep up with. Personally I think they both have long shelf lives ahead of them. But its hard to beat user generated content. For PvP they both will have staying power.

They are both good games, and given the chosen payment options, you don't have to play one at the expense of the other. Neverwinter is more of a traditional dungeon game with a trinity. GW2 offers a new experience that tends to polarise people one way or another.

At the end of the day, its a good time for MMOs. Lots of quality titles incoming.

Not sure if everyone gets a dodge.

Everyone gets a damage avoidance skill. And its always shift.

If its a dodge (cleric, rogue, wizard) then you can double tap. Warriors have to use the shift for either block (GF) or sprint (GWF).

They are clones.  This means they are exactly the same.

ive been having more fun in Neverwinter then in GW2. I think it has something to do with that spells and skills feel like they have more oomph to them. GW2 never made me feel powerful  or heroish. This game does.

Diferent strokes for different folks though.

GW2 -3/10 (gw1 is better)

Neverwinter - 5/10 (p2win money grab that *hides* the fact you need to spend 100$'s at 60 on enchantments)

Combat feel and mechanic is just miles better in NW compared to the borefest that is GW2 combat... GW2 combat + GW2 combat mechanics (No trinity, dungeons/group play feels useless and cahotic) + GW2 "endgame" really lets an otherwise fun game down.

Personally NW is a better game than GW2 ever was or will be (unless they revamped the above mentioned aspects, which they wont).

I found PVE in GW2 at higher levels boring but the PVP isn't bad if you are into that kind of thing.  I find PVP in NW unplayable across the board but the Foundry really takes the edge off of PVE grind even though the gear progression system is pretty flat.

So I guess it depends what you like to do at level cap.
