Hey I like story too.....in game types that are appropriate.

E.g. Witcher, kotor, borderlands, half life, hell even hotline Miami in its own warped way.

But...

Mmos are not an appropriate medium to deliver story.

The mmo part of mmorpg suffers badly
Hell the rpg bit does too as in most cases its a "you are a the one and only special snowflake destined to save the universe" story (tsw being the only exception)

Also the story bit suffers, not one mmo story has the quality if a good rpg like Planescape, fallout or Witcher 2. Hell even the better fps stories like half life series are better than mmo story.

Hard on heart can anyone say the swtor story lines are even half as good as the two kotor games?

To use the tv analogy above, sticking story in a mmo is like sticking story in a televised sports match or a quiz show.

The story is the extra.

I never pick a restaurant for it desserts...but eh, if they are good, it is just a tiny bonus to the restaurant!  :)

The best stories I've ever had in games are the ones told by players in the experiences they've had, for example all the crazy stuff that happens in Dayz.

I never cared for Bioware's yabber yabber style of single player games where there seemed to be more talking than gameplay, but it really made even less sense in an MMO.  GW2's story was a bit intrustive as well, but much "lighter" than SWTOR's.  TSW's just didn't interest me, and it was a big part of the game.

However, I voted for story MMO's for two reasons.

1.) Simply grinding to max level doesn't appeal to me anymore.  Maybe when I was younger and had nothing better to do than hit the same mobs 10,000 times.  I like there to be a reason for doing things.

2.) I still haven't played a really good sandbox game that I could get into, but I'm still waiting for one.

So yeah, currently I prefer a loose-story style MMORPG, but I don't think it'll always be that way.  It depends on whether anyone ever releases a good sandbox that appeals to me.

This post leaves me a little sad.  MMOs could be so much more than stories, so much more than dead words frozen in time.  If Tolkien was born today, I imagine him not writing books but writing code, interveaving layer upon layer of simulation and database over the long years of his life until one day he revealed an entire moving tapestry as his sub-creation, a world into one could wander and explore, where every rock had a history, where every orc and elf had a mission, not because some writer was going around manually adding backstories, but simply because hunger drives motive, motive unleashes behaviour and behaviour builds history as time passes.

( I should note that despite how that might sound, I have a great respect for stories, storytellers and people who consume stories ... it's just that I'm just a little mad at myself for sitting here passively playing games rather than rolling up my sleeves and actually trying to make this genre I believe exists come into being )

What do you like?

Well, you dropped the RPG from MMORPG so either you don't think of MMORPGs as RPGs or you were referring just to MMOs that are not RPGS.  I am playing MMORPGS and like story/lore.

You don't need a story for a RPG to exsist.

Those classic MMO's with a lot of grind also had the loose-story style you're talking about.  Games like EQ combined the grind and a little bit of story inbetween. It's a shame you don't want those types of games anymore (maybe it's time you part from the genre).

Todays games are the less time consuming games (The ones you like) but don't have the loose stories that you want. Which are essentially the same things that are killing genre off. Easy MMO's that require little to no work to progress through are killing off this genre. Things like quick teleportation, lower leveling curves, smaller worlds,  auction houses, etc.

I don't mind a world that's heavily set around a story so long as it has the grind and longevity of a true classic MMO. I also know that many people will argue this point against me. However, I love a classic grindy MMO. Which is also why I've taken to playing korean grindfests. They have a sense of progression and meaning behind their characters.

I just said I don't like grind but like loose story, ala GW2.  That's sort of why I'm like, playing it.  No, I'm not "parting from the genre".

I'd put GW2 in the same pool as SWTOR when it comes to a seemingly linear story. Which isn't bad (expect for swtor's stories). I however don't like GW 2's progression which is why I choose not to play it anymore. If someone can hit 60 within the first few days of release (such as myself) through very little effort. I believe the game has failed to connect me to my character (and no I'm not going to slow down my standard pace to savor every little bit of content the game has to offer).

There's just no sense of achievement in those games (YEAH! I've hit 60, 80, or 100 whatever the level cap might be; I'm just like everyone else). If you find that you like them. Great! I'm not holding it against you. You've found a game you like. However, the new MMO's aren't hitting the spot for me (unless it's a Korean grindfest).

"It is double pleasure to deceive the deceiver". - Niccolo Machiavelli

i didnt vote because of the limited choices.

I think if game developers stop using story telling as a way to progress your character then the game could have more room for variety and non linear progression.

With that said, i believe that even a good sandbox can have a deep story that has nothing to do with your character's progression towards the end of the game. Let the character progress in a free way. Tell a good story about that world where every player live in with npcs. By letting story events unfold basicaly by themselves as part of the world, not by a player taking a quest, and not requiring a player to end it, (sorry for the run-ons) the player can progress their character however they want while still having a strong story that is tied to the world they are exploring and experiencing, not to the player's avatar.

Story driven mmos so far have the story tied to the character so it has to be a linear storyline only for your character. They are enjoyable (for example swtor and GW2 personal stories), but what i said above can be a thousand times better, if done right. Free progression with non-linear story that is not attached to the player.

My personal opinion on this matter since i could not go back to old school grinding without story.

My endgame begins with character creation and ends with a new mmorpg

Voted Sandbox. I want to create my own story.

But that doesn't mean I don't want stories running in the game world, I think a world needs stories to give it more immersion, and those stories need to be bigger than what players can provide by themselves.

Ideally, in my opinion, a great Sandbox has both game generated stories of great importance and player generated stories. And sometimes these stories should meet.

Once upon a time....

I vote for story in my MMO.   Other elements are needed but without story I dont care to stick around long.

I enjoy a story driven game if it is single player but not in a MMO....I think the biggest problem is we are seeing too many casuals in MMOs that jsut want a single player experience, and alot fo the newer games are catering to this.....I dont like the story driven MMO because when the story ends, the game ends...pretty much jsut like a single game.....TO me a MMO we should make the story....When the story is already told and known, it just feels like we go through the motions.

I play for theme and gameplay elements, don't care about the story at all. Mmorpg's have horrible story compared to the rest of the RPG genre. For story I play single player games. Only mmorpg where I was interested in the lore was world of warcraft and that was because I've been playing warcraft franchise and reading up on it from 95.

The ones who play mmorpg's just for story are in reality less than 1% of the mmorpg active playerbase. If it was more we wouldn't see the trash numbers in playerbases in all those great story driven titles that have came out in the last 20 years. You can lie to yourself how much you care for the story all you want.

There of course needs to be a story in a game, otherwise it looks like a mess. But the reality is Troll 2 even has better story than most of the mmorpg's.

I like stories in my MMORPG but when they use it as a reason as to why I can't play a wookiee, I draw the line.

I don't really care about theme park or sandbox; I just want a challenge- and I want to play a character that has a lot of tools and options to deal with those challenges.

How about none of the above ?

Vanguard offers me all three playstyles - it has tons of quests, it can be played as a Diablo style dungeoncrawl, AND it has a lot of typical sandbox elements such as a "seamless" world.

Thats ideal.
