It isn't just SWTOR, this forum is just a cess pit of vitriol against any 'themepark' MMO. Don't take it personally.

It annoys me whenever someone mention 300k subs in 2003 and thought that was "bad"...

Because whenever they say that it is clear that they have no understanding of the mmo gaming market at the time [mod edit]

300k is A LOT of players to play any mmo back in 2003. There are no million pops mmo before WoW. Most mmos sit around that figures.

It is like comparing 50 bucks in 1900 to 50 bucks in 2013... 50 bucks in 1900 can probably buy you a lot of things consider back in 1900 Ford's first automobile cost $100.

Along with many other flaws.  Most the SWG fans already knew ahead of time this wouldnt hold up,  so stop blaming the SWG fans.

And true swg fans are still playing SWG ;)

This wasnt a discussion of why people left the game. It was why is there so much hate on the forums about it. Plenty of SWG vets on these forums, many of them who are pissed that SWTOR was not SWG2.

OP, perhaps you haven't been around here long enough but this site has been a hater's haven for as long as I've been here and that's been since 2006. It basically all boils down to what happened on Nov. 2005 when SOE revamped SWG. The sheer number of people that were raving after that move led to a separate "vet" forum within the SWG forum. Unfortunetly, it never stayed contained and every new MMO forum that gets released has had to deal with them. Just check the fun that's going on over at the ESO forum. TOR got a little more ever since pre-release when the devs made it clear well in advance that this wasn't going to be SWG 2. It's been a little over year since release and most haters have moved on from TOR with the exception of the same few suspects who can't get over the fact that people like this game.

because its THAT bad of a game. i understand why they can't get over it. its like you're seeing someone think week old pizza is the best thing since cellphones. its because they never experienced home-made fresh pizza that they think the week old pizza is so delicious.

except swtor's f2p is an embarassment to the term 'f2p' so even waiting for f2p, you'd leave the game even faster.

Why do I dislike it?

1. Sci fi shows, and movies usually revolve around the unknown. Exploration. SWTOR, literally has none. (jumping from one ledge to another to get a datacron is not = to exploring a new planet, or interacting with strange species or environments.

2. Sci fi-space ships-I don't need to bring up swtor's space game.

3. Star wars has a lot of adult fans, and younger fans-the younger fans have "The clone wars mmo" and "swtor". Both are pretty PG. I'm not talking about Bewbs, I'm talking about the fact that the game is cartoony as hell, and the writing is so far below biowares writing levels in every other games. Just outright cheesy. It's less adult oriented than the  clone wars cartoons as far as age.

4. SWG-it's not it. Didn't think it would be, but after playing it, holy crap, I would have taken an outdate Post NGE swg over tor. That's not a compliment for either game.

5. Beat WoW at being WoW. How did that turn out.

6. F2P will save the day-freemiums aren't buying crap from the game. Subscribers are spending the money there. I havent' met a single player that bought access to a warzone, just subscribers trying to collect everything under the sun at any cost. F2P, is more-charge your subscribers twice. And with the new Cartel Reputation being tied to spending money....

I want to continue on, with it's linear design, uninspired story, and wasted resources and developements spent on voice, but I'm bored and moving on.

yea , apparently they managed to bork up that too

a lot of swtor trouble isnt from the game itself,,its from the people in charge of its management

its like theyve build a shiny new nuclear reactor,,top notch equipment

and then they hire the local basketball team to run it

seems about the normal way most mmos are done. they start out decent enough, sometimes even great, then as time passes those in power just make bad decision after bad decision and you're left with a cataclysmic population drop

ive been playing online mmos for 8 years now

i want something new and exciting, but delivered in a familiar manner

i want to enjoy the dangerous world of mountaineering, while sitting in my comfortable home

lets face it,,pleasing a mmo player,,specially experienced ones,,is as hard as getting a man

excited for his 5th wedding

the "been there, done that" feeling will arise,,so will comparing the "current" with the "ex"

sometimes its fair,,sometimes its not

the only solution: THE MATRIX

Then I can only conclude, based on these forums, that there are no good games.

As for the OP, the answer is sheep like to go baaaaah, nothing more and nothing less.

My personal top 10 reasons:

1. 2006 graphics

2. Laggy, incomplete DirectX 9 engine

3. Space Combat is a joke (Starfox railshooter instead of a fully fledged space sim like SWG had)

4. Planets are dead, lifeless and linear. No Day night change. Exhaustion zones. No swimming.

5. Speeders are even slower than horses in medieval fantasy MMOs

6. Loading screens, lots of loading screens.

7. Most dumbed down crafting system ever seen in an MMO

8. Clearly attempts to clone WoW

9. Every "race" is a human with different face makeup

10. No housing, no minigames, nothing to do but combat

They shut down SWG because of ^this. NEVER FORGET.

Let me explain the recent theme park MMORPG (de)evolution to you:

WoW -> copy/paste + one new meaningless feature.

It has nothing to do with SWTOR hate and everything with the stale MMORPG market.

Sorry but it's completely relevent to the question the OP asked, and you are a group that constantly bashed the game before and after release.  The minute the developers said, 'WoW is the benchmark and were trying to base what we do off that', you went balistic.  There may not be, 'many', of you but your all very loud.  This site even created a subforum for all your complaints about SOE disasterbomb that was the NGE.

Noone is,'blaming', your group but you were a significant voice here, demanding the game be like SWG 2.0 otherwise you weren't going to be happy, you were, 'owed', freeform space missions, etc.

The irony is SWG was based of the models that made EQ, (like SWTOR is based of WoW models), the first major success in this industry and was always a buggy mess.  I've began to believe this is more a generational thing, that some older people can't understand how MMOs have gone this way but can't move on and find something else that suits them now.  We all outgrow hobbies, why is that so different when it comes to MMOs?

As for the OP there are a multitude of reasons and it would take a while to explain all of them.  The SWG vets hated the idea from the start, People hated EA for what happend to Jumpgate, People hated Bioware for their visions on RP games. Most importanly the game was a major letdown.

I'll try and bullet point some reasons from when I played, with three lv50s, though they have been spoken about here numerous times:

  • The version of the Hero Engine used to run the game is an unsupported betaish developer kit not fit for largescale MMO games, crashes with around 25 people on screen, rubber bands all over the place and can't handle high-res textures well.  The fact it seemed to be bought on a whim without understanding it's current state as an engine was another issue. It pretty much broke what could have been an interesting PvP world in Illium
  • The questing is basically tedious and boring, the class stories are generally pretty good, (although IMO some peak too early), but the side quests that you need to do are very generic and become a chore quickly. Expect plenty of kill twenty mobs here quests and lots of, 'run into this building, kill all these mobs on the way, and click one thing, then run back out again kill all those mobs that respawned you killed five minutes ago', type thing, which is a very outdated way of stretching content
  • Releated to that the balance of the game was all over the place in the solo content.  My first character was a Sniper and I easily breezed through everything.  When I tried playing as a Jedi Guardian I was stuck at Tattoine for a while as the class missions were just insane.  I can understand pvp/pve balance in group content can take a while or never get truly solved, but in the solo class story sense it was just bizzarre.  A lot of it depended on the companions.
  • Speaking of which, like someone else said, the companions was a missed opportunity.  I don't understand why they just didn't have simple talent trees for each companion, (i.e. dps/tank/healer), and have that as the role they play for you rather then, 'having', to take along your annoying healer companion because you can't stay alive without him, or just being cockblocked becasue you haven't unlocked your tanking companion yet.  Seems like a common sense thing to me.
  • Maintenance was a big issue.  Six hour maintenance cycles would regualrly extend to sometimes a day or a day and a half with the game down.  They also had no idea to keep seperate the EU/US servers so the EUs were down in primtime regularly. What an idiotic decision that was.
  • Light/dark side had some choices which had minor repercussions but was essentially a rep system that unlocked items when you hit threasholds.  It was basically a meter to grind and wasn't in anyway like it was sold and had little overall impact on your character.

There's plenty more but I think plenty of others have detailed them here. It's a shame with SWTOR it was the last, 'big', game for me and while I had some fun with it, I can't help but feel it's been a missed opportunity.

This looks like a job for....The Riviera Kid!
