I am currently re-reading the Hyperion series of books by Dan Simmons. It is set in the far future around 2800 A.D. I have a great love of the Unbeliever series of books (Also known as The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant the Unbeliever) by Stephen R. Donaldson also. Well, the first 6 books anyways. |

Currently reading The Malazan Book of the Fallen, on Book 8 : Toll The Hounds. The book has distinct races and tribes, distinct classes, from cadre healing mages, through high mages to foot soldiers and assassins, different continents and a great lore, it seems good to go for a game on the surface, BUT it's the pathos of the characters, the story of individual and group journeys that make it what it is. It's an epic series and no game nor movie could ever do it justice. This is the core problem of creating games from a known IP. Basing a game loosely on it's world and characters could work but without heavy involvement from the author it would struggle to grab the imagination and support of its fans. Committed fans of any IP are going to be critics of anything outside of its original source. It's an uphill battle and translation in to other media has very rarely succeeded. IMHO It's much better to create something unique that suits the developers vision of what the gaming aspects should be. ![]() |

If a game doesn't own its IP, it's always one contractual argument away from been shut down.

The Matrrix is tailor made for an MMO. The IP would work perfectly if not bungled like it was the first time around.

Stormbringer! Micheal Moorcock classic. DamonVile- Games built for disposable players are now apparently built by disposable employees. |

I rather be neutered with a rusty spoon than seeing any of my beloved books being turned into a bull's after-meal
considering how shitty the MMO industry is right now and the ludicrous levels of mediocrity and ineptitude among most if not all dev studios, I wouldnt trust them a dollar note, let alone an excellent and immaculate IP to work their anti-magic on...

Maybe cheesy, but... a HARRY POTTER MMO could be a beautiful, immersive title... or a dull, unspired, cartoony theme park mess. I wish I had the budget to make a good one.
Secrets of Dragon´s Spine Trailer.. ! :D Best MMOs ever played: Ultima, EvE, SW Galaxies, Age of Conan, The Secret World |

Originally posted by Tindale111 Otherland could indeed mak an amazing MMO due to how the story involves virtual worlds and all that and they are probably my 2nd favorite books of all time, right behind Raymond E. Feist's works. Sadly however the developers working on Otherland recently got shut down so Otherland has been put on hold for now while Gamigo searches for someone else to develop it for them :( I really hope they can find someone good to take over as I was really looking foward to checking it out but guess we'll see what happens :\ |

Originally posted by FromHell But the usual gamer aversion to 'cute' 86es it immediately, regardless. I'm gonna go with the Man-Kzin Wars period of Niven's Known Space. But of course I'd be hoping for Ringworld, still. We could go with the bug wars (Starship Troopers, Bill the Galactic Hero, Bob Aspirin, Orson Scott Card, et al) genre, instead; most likely an easier "sell". "Look how much money those Alien movies made! It's a natural!" I think the sub-genres are easier to 'sell' as IPs, in general. "We can tell a story every gamer's already kinda familiar with, and we don't have to pay rights to any specific author. Worked for Zombies and for Vampires!". Ignore the nattering of beldames, enjoy whatever you like. |
