gear restriction and skills restriction are the reason im not playing EQ2 and Vanguard. Not sure if they relieved those in VG

Gear unlocks are just a small part of the store.  There is a ton of stuff in there.

I agree with Nadia, keep the Fabled unlock and drop the Legendary unlocks.  You can easily level in Legendary gear/skills.  Paying a couple bucks per character to unlock Fabled wouldn't be that bad if all of the Fabled drops were really worth it.

I think it's a bit early to say it just doesn't work.  Tera has a great f2p system with a really great sub option.  The game is open to all classes, gear and races.  You get decent bag space for free with 3 other tabs that cost less that $15 as a bundle or $5 each.  Everything else is optional.  The sub is great because I get some nice cash shop perks (buffs) for free and a cash shop discount if I want to buy stuff.

It's sort of pay to win which I like.  You can't buy end game gear or things that let you rule over others, but spending money with them does give your account a distinct advantage.  I like that.  I like that my money spent makes my account better and it's not just a donation for useless fluff.

Maybe that won't work for SoE, but I like the model in Tera a lot.  I'm more willing to spend money if I feel I'm getting something out of that than if I have to spend it to get past a gate.

And they dont care, they dont want you to be a freeloader at max level.  they expect their max level players to sub.

The people that are upset about the gear restrictions really arent the target audience.  Maybe this is why that the communities have remained fairly strong since f2p whereas other games have suffered a bit.

 

Turbine method: nickel and dime.  intended for a steady stream of income off f2pers

SoE method: sub based.  limited money made off f2pers, instead more focused on making people want to sub.

They would rather have 100k people paying 15 per month, as opposed to having 300k people paying 5 per month

 

Wha?  Most companies would want more people paying $5...it's an MMO the last time I checked.  More people to play with the better.

Good system for low level alts.  Much better than the joke that is Turbine's system (no quests lol).

i agree w you that SOE needs to make cash too

 

but one of the confounding factors is

all gear from DOV forward  (an expansion that is 2 years old) is legendary or Fabled

 

there is no treasured quest gear in DOV or Chains of Eternity

- give ftp players the option to wear *something* from those expansions

This is sort of what put a big damper on my gameplay.  My warden is in the mid 80's and when I dropped back down to Silver I had to re-craft an entirely new set of gear since my Legendary and Fabled gear was locked.  It wasn't worth unlocking them since they were around 72 - 77 and about ready for replacement anyway.

When I went to craft all the gear worth upgrading was MCLegendary so I would still have to unlock them.  On top of that the latest xpac seemed spendy to me.  So I've just shelved the game for a little while.

I'm glad they're opening up their game a bit though.  I think that is moving in the right direction.

While its nice to see they are lifting some of the restrictions I really find it amazing that they not only had, but are keeping the worst one...

Chat restrictions. Nothing like trying to suck a player into a new MMO by not allowing him to talk to anyone but those near him...community is everything and limiting access to that is what drives more people from these paytraps calling themselves F2P.

 Maybe it isn't for you, but I am sure that being able to play all classes and races (instead of just 4) is a big victory for f2pers and silver accounts....I know I will be logging in next week to make some new alts.

If you are on a max level toon with uber gear and spells maybe you should pay a sub every now and then.  The Free to Cry gamers are really starting to get old.  It costs money to live on planet Earth, get with it or gtfo.

I am not sure why they just don't make things purchasable instead of trying to push the sub. To me that is the biggest problem with the f2p model. I would be happy to pay for access to several things, but if i am going to sub it will be a different game.

EQs only spell restriction is you cant use rank 2s and 3s as a free player that has a very small effect on your character.  The item restrctions are limited with the new expansion you can camp or buy tradeable gear in the bazaar that has the best stats for groupers or close to it.  You want to raid in EQ ?  Sub or buy a krono for 250k in the bazaar.

 

The biggest effect on EQ is the AA llimit of 1k.

Not sure why people panicked at the idea of perma-death in EQN.  Done right, it can add meaning to the game world and game play.  Check out the explanation given by the developers in Trials of Ascension as to why that game will have perma-death (which in their case means your character gets 100 regular deaths before PD kicks in).

MMO's have become no-consequence Candylands where everyone gets the Grand Prize just for showing up.  *zzzzzzzz*

Maybe Smed was bringing that up in hopes to get the reaction like he did plus to kind of show a bit of the mentality that's going into EQN. Going to be more unforgiving than the recent few years worth of games. One can hope at least, right?

Because , despite the fact that most of the commentors here say they want something new and different,  they're so trapped in the existing game systems that they cannot imagine enjoying anything new.

Started with EQ and moved onto EQ2 for a few years. Very excited to see it go in this direction. I still think the game is fantastic and will be rejoining its ranks when this goes live.

MMO's have become no-consequence Candylands where everyone gets the Grand Prize just for showing up.  *zzzzzzzz*

I'd prefer EQ's corpse drag over PD. For me, there is no joy in this.
