Obviously there isn't that many people on the game , but the F2P option has more thank likely kept the game alive. I do beleive at one point before F2P we where below the 500 k mark of subbs  , but now at least people have been trying it and the worlds are more full. Speaking of rentention how many of the old 1.7 mil subbs came back ? obviously they had a break , some probably came back and left but some of those will be left and ofcourse the old subbs. So it's helathy and it wouldn't have been without F2P.

Is FTP working for SWTOR. Depends on what you mean by working.

From EA/Bioware's prespective, it has accomplished its primary goals.

Because it's FTP, EA no longer has to report subscription numbers. This helped Riccitiello last a bit longer.

The FTP system allowed EA to introduce a cash shop into the game.

The general rule of thumb has been that cash shops are a big No-No in a subscription game. The Freemium system allows them to appear to be selling unlocks to FTP players, when in actuality, they are selling stuff to their subscribers.

The cash shop also allowed them to introduce the gambling boxes, their primary money maker.

The FTP players fill out the landscape enough so it doesn't seem that the game's main monetization scheme is selling gambling boxes to 100,000 subbers.

So yes, for EA, the FTP transistion is working. They have a small core of die hard fans paying more then they would have by subbing alone, and don;t have to spend much in the way of developing new content. Just reskin exsisting gear and throw it in gambling boxes.

As to the 2 million new accounts, as pointed out by several already, it's retention and conversion which count, and we won't know the details.

It is telling that the game, based on hype and strength of the IP was able to sell 2.4 million units, but after the reputation it created for itself, it was only able to give away 2 million units a few months later.

I would think it's safe to say at this point that anyone who plays PC games has tried it out at some point. Or at least ones who don't have a stigma against MMOs. From here on out they need to focus with making those accounts happy by fixing game related issues, adding more features and adding more content. People will keep coming back as long as there is something interesting to come back to.

im surprised , that theres no thread about riccitello on swtor forum

or do they simply delete them , as they pop?

i would love to hear andryahs spin on this one

PS try not to mention earth &beyond, she gets mad if you do

There was two threads not sure if they have been deleted or not search is your friend though. Why is everyone obsessed with Andryah ?

So OT , 2 mil new accounts created since F2P was released , can't be too bad.

Cheers,

BadOrb.

2 mil new accounts =/= 2 mil new people playing.

I have 2 accounts.  1 off and on sub account, 1 free.  Some subscribers also create a new account just to see what the restrictions would be like if they opt to go unsubscribed or preferred.  Many accounts can be created by 1 person.

Then there are those who have many accounts to possibly circumvent freemium account restrictions.  Creating a new account would also be a way to bypass infractions / bans.  How many of those new accounts have been closed for hacks?

While 2 million sounds impressive, it's the % of those new accounts who are active and the % who pay, along with the % who convert to subscribers.  My guess is that those numbers are not very impressive, hence they are withheld.

Perfect World had hit 50 million subscribers in 2011.  But they didn't have 50 million players.

--

And Andryah brightens everyones day with a hearty laugh.  Whats not to love?

You seriously think that 2.3 mil boxes / digital sold by Jan 2012 , who knows how many between then and F2P release and then 2 mil more. So a total of at least 4.3 million accounts or games sold. That doesn't impress you at all ? For a bashed / hated game for many reasons , I think it's pretty good really. At least it hasn't sunk.

I hope the new cartel rep system hasn't bittered the completionist in you. I used to be one on PSU and I was a hoarder of many nice items and it basically upset me too. I don't want any of the games community upset and i'm sorry they brought that system into the game. They are moving it though to a new part of the Ui , probably rename it , but I know that won't be enough. A real shame.

Cheers,

BadOrb.

with this speed, they will soon run out of new players,,theyre burning F2Pers at insane rates

and your captain was just sacked,,sounds like you and the games investors have different views

on its profitability,,because they have the REAL numbers

as i recall it , there was not many ads for swg, but maybe i was in the wrong places

back then , games launched , and expanded through word of mouth,,not through ads

now they launch big, and fail big

The more you know, the more you know you don't know.

On the topic of the thread:

For me, f2p in SWTOR is not working. Went from subscriber to f2p. And since I was at that point a former subscriber  I got more then someone that never subbed before. Even with that, I feel the game (like most so-called f2p games) is extremely restrictive. Not that it should not be. But it just begs to have the question asked "why would anyone play such games?".

I am now done with SWTOR. It was fun (as a subscriber) up until the content ran out. From then on it became repetitive and therefore boring.

Let's party like it is 1863!

BadOrb mentioned the 2.3M copies sold number that EA announced last May; the people this number didn't impress however was EA.  The 1.7M number they announced was subsequently clarified by the then CEO JR who said that "just about half" were recurring subscribers - so c. 850k. And for a game that needed 1M subs to "make a profit but nothing to write home about" that was bad news.

And today - as ktanner3 says - just about anyone who wanted to try SWTOR and has a PC has probably done so by now. When the gam elaunched EA sold 2M boxes out of the gate. And whilst the extra 300k sales in the next 3 months wasn't that good the number look very good when compared to the number of F2P accounts. Put another way: EA sold more full priced copioes of SWTOR in 4 months than they were able to give away.

What are 2M accounts worth however? Well if Zynga's experience/data can be applied to SWTOR then most of their revenue comes from 5% of their accounts. So 2M accounts would be worth maybe 100k subscribers (assuming that f2p folk become subscribers once they start to spend $15+ a month. Divide by the average retention e.g. if the average play time is 2 months then that would be 50k a month (after 4 months).

So n money terms 2M accounts are not worth a great deal. And it will get harder to get new accounts. Which is why I think ktanner3's view that EA need to focus on making their sub accounts happy is the way they need to go.

There is also the returning former subscribers who couldn't create new characters, because of the limitations, or those who got hit with the creator bug, which said a player had more characters than they actually did.  The solution, create a new F2P account, and put their main account on the back-burner!

I'd wager that among the 2 million "new" accounts, many of those are also former subscribers hit with the bug, as well as current subscribers checking out how F2P works.  I have 2 accounts (1 paid, 1 free), and others I know (in and out of RL) did the same.

Then there are those who make new accounts when one gets banned or infracted (plenty of YouTube bot software videos), and those who make many accounts to avoid restrictions.  Character slots would be one to circumvent, but the WZ / FP caps might be another (never tried that with many F2P accounts, but it should work, and probably does).

Investors are apparently easy to fool though, and 2 million new accounts sounds very impressive.  Investors likely don't play computer games though, so they get manipulated nicely by EA and all their outlandish statements.

AFAIK it wasnt a bug, it was just counting characters on PTS if you had some there.

Its worse than a bug because it was WAI at that moment ;P

No, it was and still is a bug in the REAL LIVE game.  But EA thanks you for trying to belittle it down to public test servers only!  Maybe you need to try out the F2P system?  It's not (and never was since last year) operating as expected.

I don't know what "WAI" means, btw.
