OP  3/03/13 1:10:18 AM#21

I will say for certain that the roadmap is absolutely a welcome sight.  I only wish that the game I'm currently playing would be even half this specific about their plans.  I applaud the PS2 team and SOE for putting the future out in the open for all to see.

On the whole, however, this game is such a large departure from Planetside 1 that nothing on the Roadmap will ever steer the ship back to where I, personally, would want to play it again.  PS2 removed the classless freeform system that PS1 introduced and replaced it with a much more palatable system for beginners, but at the cost of a severe lack of depth and tactics.

The classless, limited cert, unlock system where we could choose our own loadouts, was such a deep and strategic system that I remember debating for hours with players in my outfit on what the optimal certs, implants and loadout for a character wearing light armor and carrying an MCG would be.  The new system certainly caters to those who prefer a learning line rather than a learning curve by removing all of those choices, but it also removes the part of the game where a fight boiled down to a lot more than just "I see you, *bang bang*, you're dead".

On the surface, PS2 looks like it has a lot of choices for each class, but in reality a lot of those choices are "choices that aren't really choices".  In other words, I would really love to have extra magazines and extra grenades on my heavy assault class, however I don't want them at a cost of reducing my health by 25%.  So, in essence, it's a choice that's not a choice.  There's almost no situation where having more of any ammunition will outweigh being more survivable, especially considering how quickly weapons kill in this game.

For me, this is simply another surface deep, frag fest shooter.  Not only that, but the metagame is so lacking that I'd rather play CoD/BF3 just simply for the fact that I at least know who won or lost the round and how much I contributed to that outcome.  After about two hours of whack-a-mole I start getting these "This is really pointless" thoughts and log off to find something else to do.

I picked the game up the day alpha squad was on sale and i enjoyed the game a lot until a couple of weeks post release, when i just lost interest in the game.

I always did well on the battlefield and was with a great outfit that did its best to keep its members engaged, but at the end of the day, the lack of depth with characters and the actual battles, which become endless repeats of what had gone before, left me wondering why i was playing.

I think the biggest reason i stopped playing was that I never felt a real sense of achievement that i have with other games. Darkfall for example, winning a city in that game after a really tough fight was a great sense of achievement and fuelled bragging rights for many days after, heck even winning a 1v1 in DF left a player with a great sense of satisfaction when it felt like a challenge and not just because you could relieve your fallen foe of their posessions, although is always nice.

Sadly, PS2 hasn't the same feeling, but great communication from the devs, it's just a shame they never listened to what folk were saying during beta. ;)

Short TTK doesn't work in an MMOFPS, not everyone has good connection nor PC performance, I've been shot without a chance to respond many times and I have done the same to other players. In PS1, you at least had the window to respond when being shot at.

PS2 is basically a twitchfest and getting worse with the new stupid pump action shotguns (which was voted down).

The trend in most F2P games of this nature is to release a new weapon every month that's more powerful than any of the other weapons you can buy.  So you buy it and use it for a month and then they nerf it and release a new more powerful weapon the next month.  Last month, iirc, it was the SMG's that everyone was complaining about.

As a PS1 vet, thank you, O.P., very much for your comprehensive explanation. I hope SOE captures the next generation with this mindless, non-strategic, frag-fest. I can't imagine any PS1 player, or strategic-thinker, being interested in this.

The direction SOE has taken gives me little hope for EQNext. Please right the ship, SOE!

I should add, if PS2 gets 'fixed' and opens a P2P server, then count me in. If EQNext has a non FTP server and isn't mindless, then I will also play that. /much hate FTP and the riff-raff it invites.

In F2P I think it's more a case of the game's trying to play the player's. -laserit

I can't complain about it honestly. Everyone is always whining for a large scale FPS, with tons of vehicles - thats what we got. Not like BF3 where it looked as if it may be large, but wasn't, and that vehicles will be a big part of the game, and they weren't. I mean I agree with some points you make, honestly there seems to be little to gain from defending the bases, and even capturing them aside from currency, exp, access to terminals, and your factions logo hanging on it. I mean that is a good deal of incentive - but nothing extremely game changing I suppose.

Ok, FPS on a mass scale is appealing in a pew pew sort of way. That's not PS, but fine.

Why serve one market when you can serve two? SOE should spinoff PS2 and make the spinoff more strategic and war like rather than a water balloon fight. I.e., akin to PS1 with lattuce lines, hack times, etc. The only thing I wanted from PS2 was improved graphics and, possibly, sea-going vessels. Beyond that PS1 was perfect.

SOE's 'one code base' mentality is a liability which I feel costs them millions of customers every year. When NGE hit, they contemplated spinning off a new game instead of overwriting SWG. But they didn't and the rest is history.

Well, I really agree with most of the complains.

Try it during this week and this game feels like a ping pong.

It is not that much fun when you ( lvl 8 ) clear 1 magazine on a lvl 60 and they won't go down.

I played Planetside for two years, best online game ever despite of SOE doing it's best to kill it.

I just started Planetside 2 last night and played for 6 hours straight.

Thanks for your summary, something was off but I couldn't put my fingers on it.

I also have a better understanding of how the game works now.

Not being able to place CE around bridges and bases is a big one also not being able to cloak very well. My two favorite things I did in PS1.  I also noticed it takes a LONG time to get cert points. I think I got 10 per hour if that. (a weapon costs 500)

Also I don't like one hit kill weapons. The sniper rifle can now kill me in one hit. I think I even got killed by a shotgun in one hit.

Could you also make a list of things Planetside 2 does better then Planetside 1?

I think the graphics for instance are absolutely amazing, BIG towering bases and the scenery looks awsome as well.

it doesnt do anything better than planetside 1 or daoc, which are the pinacle of this kind of pvp. (sadly both got broke with expansions)

BUT.........

Its a considerably better game than GW2, WAR, AION etc..

And it is improving with patches / expansion - such as

Anti air is now better. improvements to AA maxes, new rocket launchers

Anti vehicle is now better. engineers carry more mines, new rocket launchers, engi anti vehicle turret

It has a bit more meta game with the alerts

shotguns got toned down

hackers are less frequently encountered

cert gain is faster

subscribers get a ton of certs while offline now.

good tactics pay off, like MAX drops, pre assualts  with infiltrator squads etc..

You forgot to add that it takes 5 or more hits from an anti-tank rocket launcher to take out a tank but anyone can run up and drop a mine near it and take it out.  The tank doesnt even have to run it over, you just drop it next to it.  Cant tell you how much it irks me to unload that 1000 cert point anti-tank launcher at a tank, hit all 5 times and just watch it roll away as I stand there out of ammo and then later see an engie run up and drop a mine next to a sundy and take it out all by himself.

you cant drop mines on top of tanks anymore, they fixed that.

C4 drops from light assualts are still a cool way to take tanks out though.

Hmm, seems as though your rockets are weaker then mine. I can take them out in 2-3 shots.

As for capping any base anywhere on the map is untrue. You can't cap a base that isn't near your sphere of influence. Aside from that, as someone else pointed out, PS2 has the curse of being an FPS, which in essence means, cheaters aka aimbots and wallhacks. Granted PS2 is F2P which is fine for this sort of dilemna, but I won't ever pay for an FPS again, ever.

You get cheaters in tab Target mmo pvp too. They're just as susceptible to speed, teleport, invulnerability and wall hacks. They also introduce the ability to hack gcd so several spells spike on the same tick.

I've encountered more hackers in the likes of wow, war and gw2 than I have either planetside.

I'm a new player and I already learned to use land vehicles just for transport.

Infantry (and air off course) can kill my tank in what seems to be only a few hits.

Plus the terrain isn't very suitable for vehicles and I get half stuck on buildings a lot of the time.

I'm confused at what part of the OPs criticisms makes this game a bait and switch?

The game has flaws, it's arguably not as good as PS1, but how does that somehow mean you were 'cheated' or that they advertised one thing and gave you another.

They promised an updated game based off the original. Which it is. Surprise! Sequels aren't always as good as the originals. It's a free game, I guess I don't understand the amount of butthurt here. Also, the whole community thing is definitely server / faction specific. I have a couple characters on multiple servers, and on the one I play most (TR) we most definitely care about the maps. We're constantly switching maps to try and flip what we can. I'm not going to say that's how the majority of the game is for everyone, because I just don't know, but I know enough to say there are portions of the community that don't act like that. Sorry you rolled on a server that does.
