I think the thing to really take away from this is that there is a large difference between what we consider good clones and bad. A bad clone takes a good ideal and adds little, or nothing, to it. A good clone takes a good ideal and expands on it, making everything about its success larger and grander than before. Path of Exile took a style, both artistic and gameplay, and drove it forward. Its the very same reason that WoW was a success in the first place. They took the core concepts of the EQ style MMO game and expanded on it and added to it in a way that made in more fun to play. Then Blizzard forgot that this was the reason they owned THAT market, and failed to apply it to D3. Its not the fact that a game is cloning positive aspects of another that we hate. Its the lack of innovation and drive AFTER the fact we hate. PoE took the D2 formula for success and souped the engine up then added some Nitrous and flashy lights to the undercarriage. We LIKE that. For all the talk otherwise, I don't really think we expect someone to reinvent the wheel here. But we do expect them to make it last longer and work better with each new model. With the average WoW clone, its the opposite. You get the bare bones of a good game, with all the pretty lights said game has stripped away. Its like replacing a rubber racing tire with a spoked wagon wheel. YAY! They both make stuff roll forward! Just make sure you have a carpenter before you ford the river, I dunno about you guys but my trips to Oregon usually cost me about 3 of those things each time. |

Remember Star Frontiers by TSR? Or how about James Bond and Runequest from Victory Games? I'm taking a shot of vodka every time I see a reference to a game being a WoW or Diablo clone. |

Lets look at it this way.
U just had s*x (kinky time with a GF or BF) for the first time... it was OK, but it was not good. This is how i see Diablo 3 But i did it in the same way, like i did it with my old GF, --- lets say Diablo 2.... wich were alot better But then, 12 month later, i find new GF, and start having kinky time with her. Yes, we doing the same thing, but now its better, ALOT better. Thats how i see PoE Its hard to make hack and slash game, that does not look like diablo1. coz there are ALOT of games, that look the same way. but they are not the same... |
