At the end of the day a beta is exactly that a beta . I have no problem paying for full releases even ones with Subs , What the post is stating is that paying for a game you ahve never tried never even logged into should charge you $ for beta access witch manny of these Founders packs do .

NOW i have no issue at all paying for a founders pack after i ahve tested or played the game in question if i like it.

The thing that i object to is games that come out and say look at me come buy me even though you have no idea who or what i am or what i offer.

Doesnt that annoy others aswell?

Both firefall and rift people were able to play the games before the founders pack was introduced witch i have no issue with .

And at the end of the day the Consumer is the one with the power if you dont agree with this just look at how manny mmo's fail , Ratio is arround 1000 games made 1 succeeds.

Trion sold beta access to Storm Legion. ANet sold access to GW2.  It's just what companies are doing now and it isn't a F2P only thing.  I don't like it either, but then I don't have to buy access.

I'm still a game tester and haven't bought access to those tests.  If a studio wants testers and I apply and get in then great.  If I don't and they want to sell access then that's their choice too.

I don't recall that.  If memory serves right those who just bought the game without all the fluff still had access to the Betas, same with Rift (launch) and SWTOR.  I don't consider that selling out keys, but a thank you.  Now with Cryptic while the game is F2P but one has to shell out $60 at a minimum to get beta access, the cheap one doesn't grant access, and this is for closed beta.  They have yet to reward those that have followed the game though all the development cycles and were/are active on the forums.  Not to mention all the other closed beta weekend access are awarded to those that aren't even supporting Cryptic but belong to PWE besides the founders pack and the lifetime members of CO/STO.  Then there was the PG gamer thing which was another tactic to increase sales in a publisher.  The whoile thing reeks of greed.  At least Anet, BW, and Trion didn't sell out their customers but rewarded those that already bought the game in pre-orders.

GW2, BW, Trion never sold closed beta keys either,  Those were given and was kept under NDA like how it's suppose to be done.

Now I Normaly don't chime up and I love giving new games and debs a chance but is it just me or  is this becoming common place where we are getting charged to try betas out as though we should pay money to test developers games.?

Though of late I have actualy found one game I.e firefall that is very enjoyable , I was still able to play it before throwing my hard earned dollars down . I think more and more games are saying come here and pay to be testers for our games. This is actualy pointed to neverwinter but a lot are taking this stature.

So my question is isn't it a little to ask a player to throw down 59$ to be a beta tester for a game that in the end you as des should be I tiding us to play.

I know gaming is a business but I think charging for half finished games that no one has access to is a little unfair thoughts?

Beta is just a bonus.

Everyone can get into beta for free.

The guranteed access is a nice bonus.

If you look closely on the packages you really pay for the extra bag space, a mount, a companion etc

The packs will probably exist after launch.

I think you are a spoiled kid who wants everything for free. Wake up.

As i do know now what you mean..

BUT

its still YOUR choice to pay yes or no..

the game company decides to make some sort of plan for testing that involves money.. which is fine but..

Did any game put on a knife on your throath for paying? i dont think so..

You are paying money because you want to play that half finished game that no one has access to. If you didn't, they wouldn't be charging for it because no one would pay for it. The only person to blame for this is the gamer. They control the price, not the developers.

if you buy a package months before the game is released you are supporting the development of the game, and its only natural you get beta as a bonus.

If you look close on the packages you really pay for the content, bagspace, mount, extra char slots... etc

Beta testing used to be testing.  Then beta testing became free trial.  Then beta testing became paid early access.

Evolution :-)

oh wait, would that be innovation...  or maybe invention?  I get so confused.

You could buy early access and beta access by pre-ordering.  Recently Trion sold beta access to Storm Legion along with a one week jump start for pre-ordering.  NDA has nothing to do with anything.  It's all closed if you need a key for access so I don't know where you were going with that.

The fact is that you could access all of those beta periods and this Neverwinter beta period without having to purchase anything, but they all offer(ed) guaranteed paid access.

I'm going to beta test Neverwinter because I got a key with my Torchlight 2 purchase.

I don't think selling access to beta tests is the right way to conduct testing, but then again I don't think it's any worse than using beta test access as shameless promotionals which they all do now.  I believe in doing good testing to make a good product.

Not innovation. The game companies have devalued the purpose of public testing to find those issues. Devolution is the word you are looking for. Gamers go into a Beta "Testing" thinking they will have a finished polished game that they can either tell their friends about or are sorely disappointed the game isn't finished and want to complain about it not being finished. The real value of Beta was originally that the game companies could get usability testing done on a large scale without paying a penny for it. Now, Beta is used instead of "Early Access" which is a completely different situation.

I played WoW up until WotLK, played RoM for 2 years and now Rift.
I am F2P player. I support games when I feel they deserve my money and I want the items enough.
I don't troll, and I don't take kindly to trolls.

I think there are people that don't view a beta as work in quality control, for them, I can see a company charging them to enter the game.

I've never been chosen for a beta so I can't say what all goes on inside but from the outside I see people leaking information. After waiting over a year for Warhammer beta and not getting in - I got a little butthurt and really don't apply to them anymore.  I also saw a few people in betas on streaming casts complaining about things. I would ask them - why not report it. Their excuses were varied from "The form is too long to fill out" to "I don't expect to play this game after beta anyway". Those people certainly aren't treating it as quality control. Again, why not make them pay if they aren't there for the right reasons.

They are either there to show off that they are outside the masses or to test the game to see if it's for them. That saddens me that I can't get in there and report bugs but I do that during normal gameplay sooo maybe my information is the first time they hear it or the 100th, who knows when they don't have a tracker in lots of games to review known issues.

With my own game, if I went to the public for beta - I wouldn't charge. I would instead expect a quota of issues found to continue to prove to me that they were there to test, not just play.

It's probably all part of marketing for that payment model. They let people in free afterward anyway, it's probably just another way to hint to you that you will pay to play the game, one way or another. It's not intended to really be free.

If people are willing to pay to get in, there's no reason a company shouldn't sell access.

There is another possibility to this and a different way to look at it if you were going to try and generalize.  Community driven testing stopped producing acceptable results.  As the tech and gaming industries have matured the studios are using more sophisticated and professional testing internally.  The community alpha/beta tests are used as systems/stress tests and to gauge player response to mechanics.

One way to identify your committed community members is sell slots.  Players get a guaranteed opportunity to make their voice heard at a point when the developers can listen and have greater flexibility.

The business model doesn't matter with regards to this.  Every game is monetized on some level.  I expect to see more early previews defined in this way for both sub-locked and sub-free games.

I think companies are getting smart. They know they are releasing a crappy game so they have 2 options.

1. Release the game, hope people spend some money and stick with it before they realize its crappy.

2. Offer expensive packs or early beta access and get a huge chunk of $$ up front before people realize its crappy.

Don't be terrorized! You're more likely to die of a car accident, drowning, fire, or murder! More people die every year from prescription drugs than terrorism LOL!
