SFC scan does software/registry and CHKDSK /F does hardware layer disk checking and attempts to fix bad sectors.

What are you even talking about?  The two are completely different tools...

CHKDSK is a tool used to check the file system of a disk, to make sure that data can be read and written properly.

SFC is used to scan the Windows system files to make sure the required system files exist, and are valid (not fake replacements).  If it detects a problem with one, it attempts to restore it from a protected folder designed specficially for this, or from the windows disk if the folder is also corrupted.

Ummm I know.

Like I said.

He/she ran SFC scannow a couple of times now - problem is not in the file system.

SFC scannow is a nub tool people read about on yahoo answers - but few outside of technical fields ever chkdsk /f their machines unless their IT does it for them.

Do you work in IT every day for the past decade? I do.

Chkdisk and SFC have two completely different purposes.  One isn't going to fix the problems of another, and one certainly isn't somehow better than the other, as you imply.

I'm not about to get into a work credentials argument with you here, but yes, I have more experience than 10 years in "IT".

Check your motherboard for swollen caps. This could cause weird issues like this and it will only get worse.  Easy to check and can save you from buying a new HDD.

*SIGH*

Here you go - learn something new Mr. IT Veteran!

"The MBR is actually a low level executable program that contains the appropriate instructions on booting the computer. As such, it is susceptible to malware that may replace its code with something more malicious. This has already been exhibited by some viruses that replace the MBR with their own code in order to deliver their own payload even before the computer is able to launch the OS. Even though the partition table is not an executable, it also needs to be protected. If the partition table is corrupted, the computer will not be able to tell where one partition starts and where the other begins. This can result to data corruption and even cause the computer not to start."

I HAVE SEEN issues where MBR is just fine and PC reads the OS but that can't load it fully and BLUE SCREENS because the PARTITION TABLE is corrupted due to a malware infection.

The PARTITION TABLE is contained w/in the MBR - but it's not the same thing.

Hence why I said might be a good idea to mess with CHKDSK and auto-recovery first before getting into fixmbr stuff as that can break things more.

I know the difference between SFC scannow and CHKDSK - he/she has run SFC scannow - didn't fix problem because windows file structure is not the problem.

Hard drive MIGHT be.

CHKDSK /F might help fix hard drive errors causing irregularity in boot and other system stability.

/class dismissed.

It could be a MBR issue like Spock said, it could also be a hardware issue.  If you do get a blue screen you can give everyone the exact error which would help in troubleshooting.

To kill any installed software related issues,  I would at least try to get into safemode after the first time of experiencing the problem, which kills all unnecessary services... this could signify something is starting up that is causing a crash.

As far as the harddrive going out, you can check in your error logs and see if there are any DISK errors, which usually signifies bad blocks more times then not.

You can also check to make sure all your cables are connected properly to your hard drive, in the event there is a loss of power on the drive or something is a little loose, you could experience intermittent blue screens.

There's a lot of misinformation floating around here...

MBR problems tend to be very black and white.  Either the MBR works and the OS location is found, or it doesn't, and the computer complains about there not being an OS installed (there might be, but the MBR doesn't actually know where on the disk it is, usually  because the MBR got corrupted or cleared).  Since his OS is clearly being found, the MBR is not the issue.

That is a little presumptuous,  and it would depend on how things were set up originally on his PC.  There are cases of MBR issues within multiple installations that could default to the wrong installation causing a blue screen.

Seeing as how he's had a tech work on his PC before, it could be an instance where he might have multiple installations.  Thats really just splitting hairs though.  Without the specific error, and without seeing it, we all get to presume as much as we want.

Exactly.

He might come back to the thread and say "I've been using the same HD for 5+ years and this is my 4th OS installation on it" and I'd say "OK buy a new one" but we don't know all the details.

OP says "fully scanned HD" but what scan?

If this is a newer/brand new drive and this is first/only OS installation I'd say it's corruption likely related to a virus or malware.

If it's old as balls it's probably physical and/or logical and a reinstall / reformat / chkdsk might fix it.

Because, in fact, my dads motherboard is going out and its the same exact age and brand and type as my motherboard. He has similar problems starting up (edit: And his problem started at nearly the same exact time mine did), but not exactly the same

Buy a new one.

Helps to read the later posts by the OP :)

OP - unless you know what you're doing you'll spend LESS buying new equipment than paying someone to fix it.

The OP hasn't said for sure if he has run SFC yet, actually, which is why I mentioned it.  He does say that he thinks the tech might have, but wasn't sure.

As for chkdisk, that gets run automatically when windows needs to recover from some things, much like the OP explains in his first post.  It offers to scan for erros but finds nothing.

And as for the MBR quote you have... that's nothing new at all, and the information is irrelevant unless he actually has one of the rare MBR viruses.  He states that his tech guy already checked his computer out for viruses though, so I'm not going to spend a lot of time chasing that lead.

Feel free to have him reset the MBR though.  It usually works just fine, fixes nothing, and runs a risk of him not being able to load windows at all after he does it.  Data won't be lost, but it's hardly the kind of solution you want to use first.

SFC /scannow is a quick and easy test.  Takes just a few minutes to run, and will quickly allow you to rule out or comfirn the OS actually having problems.  He's already checked the disk for errors several times, with no problems reported.

Now if he comes back and says that yes, he's run SFC before (or his tech has) and there were no problems, then I'll move on.  Until that happens, it seems kind of silly to start spouting out advice like "reinstall windows" or "fix the boot record" or whatever.  That's like telling a person with a bad spark plug that they should just have the engine replaced.

Yes, except that is not the sort of issue that randomly crops up unexpectedly.  It's also not something that only happens on some startups, and not all.

I had gathered from the OP on other posts that this stuff had already been done. And it sounded like he had run sfc but not chkdsk. So I took it to the next level.

But, you are right.

Honestly, OP if your "tech guy" charges you money - like an hourly rate - you're better off buying a new MOBO and HD than spending money on your tech guy.

100-300 bucks at home tech support or 100-200 bucks for a new MOBO and HD that isn't 4-5 years old.

And if ALL of your hardware is 4-5 years old, you can probably buy an entire PC that is faster for 400-500 bucks.

Those who ask a question, are stupid for 30 seconds. Those who never ask, are stupid for life.

OP  1/08/13 7:17:56 PM#30

Called up the tech guy, and he confirmed he did a SFC scan. I thought he replaced the MBR files too back when the problem had started...he mentioned it but wasn't entirely sure either. Pretty sure he did a MBR fix that goes in and does a completely fresh master boot record. He has also did this scan that goes in and replaces system files? Didn't hear him too well on that part. Then a couple other things a while back but he didn't go into details what. He did a pretty good look through my computer and used a couple different virus scans. One is setup to run before the PC starts up (while its loading and pressing f12 or whatever key it is, then it boots into the virus program) and a new one he was using. These were done on two different occasions. He also messed with the wires, re-connected stuff and changed wires out. In case some of the wires were bad.

Also, he got bluescreen errors booting into safe mode too. In fact, he said he had a really hard time booting into safe mode...it took 3-4 computer restarts for it to actually boot in. He eventually had to completely power everything off and disconnect the power coord, then he reconnected it and got in.

As for the error. Not exactly sure what to look for. This is all it says, so I assume the info is in there somewhere. This is 100% of everything that shows up in the critical error.

The system has rebooted without cleanly shutting down first. This error could be caused if the system stopped responding, crashed, or lost power unexpectedly.

I doubt it's an issue SFC is going to fix.  SFC detects corrupt files and replaces any that it finds that are "damaged".  I doubt it's an MBR issue either.  Any sort of soft disk error that would prevent it booting would not magically go away once you reboot a few times.

It sounds to me like a hardware issue, possibly the hard drive but I doubt it.  I suspect that since it stabilizes after it's had power applied for awhile (while you are rebooting multiple times and blue screening) and then remains perfectly stable as long as you don't power it off that it's one of the following in order of likelihood:

  • power supply
  • motherboard
  • ram
  • cpu
  • video card
The easiest way to troubleshoot it in the absence of spare 'known working' hardware laying around to swap in is to remove as much of the above as you can and see if any of them makes a difference.  If it's the power supply obviously you can't do this and would need a known working unit to swap in to see if that resolves the issue.  What you can do is reduce the load on the power supply as much as possible by disconnecting power from everything but what you need to boot:  motherboard, primary boot storage device, video card (if your motherboard has no onboard video option to test with).

In my experience, most of the issues with blue screens after the computer has been broken in for a few months is related to heat.  Cleaning out dust or a failed fan on the video card are usually the main culprits.  So I would always start with the simple clean your case.  Aside from that you could be looking at an electical fault or heat damage as other possible culprits where you would have to replace hardware.  Then there are driver faults, but you will notice those immediately after updating a driver.  There are also typically few driver faults on release versions.  Most people download the beta version of video drivers.

Choose System under the Control Panel heading in the list of results

Click on the System and Security link.

Click on the System link.

In the task pane on the left, click the Advanced system settings link.

Locate the Startup and Recovery section near the bottom of the window and click on the Settings button.

In the Startup and Recovery window, locate and uncheck the check box next to Automatically restart.

From now on, when a problem causes a BSOD or another major error that halts the system, Windows 7 will not force a reboot.

This should give you enough time to read the BSOD description in the bottom under "technical information:"

I've solved more BSOD problems just by following those simple steps than looking at the event viewer dump file

My tech guy was here (he was in the neighborhood, didn't even have to pay him...gave him a small bonus anyway)

And right when he was about to leave...

I have google open, rift and skype running.

My PC completely locks up, sound becomes very distorted...and I couldn't even power off the pc with the power button. Tech guy had to turn it off in the power switch in the back.

And...we narrowed it down to the crappy motherboard. Which is the exact motherboard my dad has, and his pc has exact same problems.

Too bad I can't afford a new motherboard...oh well...the motherboard my dad got us he hates, its like a crappy low mid end motherboard. Just barely able to run the parts needed on my machine...

He suggested it could be the videocard too, but he thought it was more likely the motherboard.

It was making weird graphical lines on my monitor, and spent most of the time having distorted sounds with a black screen. And the graphics were all kind of distorted...

The weird thing is, nothing shows up in the event viewer at all. Like it never happened. But I guess it wouldn't list hardware errors...and just software/os ones.

(edit)

Would a virus do what I described though? like a really nasty one? My tech guy couldn't find any, and he spent hours looking.

Probably not a virus.

Motherboard is a likely culprit. I will say this: power supplies can often been the root cause of things like this. The computer turns on and off fine, and all seems normal, but a crappy power supply putting out non-spec voltages will cause a good motherboard (or video card or any other component) to go bad. So you change out the motherboard (or video card of whatever), and it all works fine for a while, until the bad power supply burns that up too.

Sounds like a device driver issue. Try booting up in "Safe Mode" and see if BSOD occurs. If you get BSOD while booting into "Safe Mode", then your hardware components are most likely causing the problem. Also, try writing down the erro code (the line ond blue screen that has many weird numbers, letters, and lots of zeroes, etc) and google that to see what that code is telling you. I'd back up all the important files on a separate media besides this hard drive and do a full fresh Windows reinstall (not a restore). Finally, don't forget to check your Device Management to see if there are any "Yellow exclamination marks" on any of the device installed in your computer.

So, below is a to check list:

1. Boot into "Safe Mode" and see if Blue screen occurs

2. Write down error code from Blue screen and google to see what it means

3. Check Device Management for Yellow exclamination marks (after sucessfully booting into your Desktop)

4. Back up files on other media (Flash drives)

5. Perform fresh Windows reinstallation (Not a windows restore option)

6. If it is determined that your hard drive is bad after all the above option, then it is probably a time for new hard drive :)

Oh don't forget to do a Memory test because sometimes RAM do go bad. Good luck buddy.

I'll have my tech guy come and do a test on various hardware.

But it does BSOD at trying to boot up into safe mode. 2-3 weeks ago, the tech guy tried booting into it...and it kept BSOD on him and he couldn't boot into it at all. Though he didn't get a chance to do much last night except a quick look and see the hardcrash last night. He had places to be and he  wasn't even really hired to come. He was just happened to be nearby.

I'm just going to save up for a whole new system. Problem solved...sort of...I just have to get the money :P

Since I would want to get new ram, motherboard, power supply and a better harddrive (a SSD one)...I might as well upgrade my graphics card too.

My current system

i5 3.3 processor (its a shitty low end one)

Geforce 260GTX 896MB

Windows 7 64bit (hopefully keep same OS, I don't want Windows 8)

1.5 TB harddrive

8gig DDR3 ram

So. A whole new system. Thats like what...1,500 dollars? I would want a modern high end, good quality one.

No matter how much...I'll just live with my PC until I saved enough.
