In Underworld server -EU its still lots of people to play with, by example, today by 03:30 , more or less 50 people comes from LA to help on Jormag's and then shatterer.

By the way, they fix the shatterer event and now its one of the best ones to be made, the only thing its still crappy its their bad drops (full blue and green crap itens).

The population is a lot more spread out than they were during the first month. Not only are there players all across the level range, but there are 27 PvE zones, 9 dungeons, World vs. World and SPvP, so there are a lot of places for all those players to be. (Level Scaling means that even as more players reach level 80, they aren't all going to be concentrated in two zones when they are out in the PvE world).

Of course, average hours played per player per week has to have dropped into ore sustainable levels.

All of this may lead to the perception that the game has seen a real drop in population, but the cities are still well populated, when leveling alts I still see a fair amount of players in the level 1-15 and 16-25 zones and there are still queues for WvW.

There is some churn, as there always is. I only see about half the people on my friends list with any regularity now, but I occassionaly see someone I haven't seen for weeks pop online, so people are taking advantage of the lack of sub fee to come and go.

How do you get that number? only thing i can think of is for compare it to say wow which officially announced it has 10 million subs, it only has 6k players on xfire though, while gw2 has close to 4k, meaning gw2 should have atleast over 5 million players by that logic.

I don't think you can compare game populations via XFire, you can use the numbers to track each games population though, if you use the unique log ins rather than hours played, it is a fair bet that a game that had 5000 log ins per day and now has 2500 has suffered a loss in population, I have no idea what the numbers show for  GW2. I wouldn't bother posting on here though, if you do check it out, I believe XFire threads about an individual games population are locked/Deleted.

Xfire has been, according the mods, deemed unusable on a factual and unusable in judging population. Please refrain from talking about xfire before they close this thread down. Focus on answering ops questions (that is for all of us).

What strikes me as funny is that saying that the number of people in a race capital somehow can be used but XFire cannot. Does not make any sense to me at all.

As for how I got that number. I compared it to MMORPGs which have published their sub. numbers, such as Eve. Did not use WoW as that game is an anamoly.

Whan a suggestion like this pops up, it usually means that the game is on the verge of dying.

Kidding aside it seems like other level based MMO's a few months after release. Some people in the starter zones rolling alts but the majority of the population at max level amd not much in the middle.

Usually giving a surprisingly accurate represenation vs other offerings and trends on how things are going. The question would be what does a # in Xfire mean in total #'s? One can use WoW's stated #'s and XFires to figure out that out, then apply it to other games.

Xfire shows GW's has dropped from initial surge. Is that really a surprise to anyone or wrong?

It shows spikes on weekends.

It shows spikes on Events.

All sensible. So the trend lines to me are accurate, again.

It's doing ok, not terrible, not great. To me the game didn't live up to the hype, that said there are still good qaulities to it. To me the game felt rushed about a year early AND there is an issue of Open World gaming and not enough people around, something many said wouldn't happen because of how it scales and how it drops loot, oops.

I remember this.   I just can't believe people actually bought everything ANET said without even giving a moment's thought.

Release a game with a very large established fanbase from 10+ years of bnet history when the market was still emerging and the casual base had not yet been established, thus ripe for harvesting a momentious self perpetuating playerbase people never leave because they have X hours invested in their characters, and their friends and everyone else plays anyway. Not discounting Blizzard quality... but WoW's success is as much about perfect timing as it is quality, if not more so. - Derros

Instead of responding to a  GW2 topic with your usual hostility you could try reading the question and answering it. He didnt ask if it had the most pop, only if it had a lot of people compared to most other MMO's.

Op, I don't know for sure  about population, although I always see plenty of people when I have logged in. But when you said you were looking for a MMO to invest a lot of time in you may want to wait for a free trial for GW2 since it is overly casual friendly.

The trouble is, all of the players are in fractals and nowhere else.

Pretty much this.  Though I still get put into an overflow server whenever I go to Lion's Arch or Divinity's Reach.  Then again, I play on the unofficial RP server for U.S.

I haven't seen a group get together to beat the Lyssa Event in some time; it suits me just fine, though as it provides a nice stress test for new warrior builds I make or set out to improve (the three prior events and not the boss fight itself).

When faced with strife or discontent, the true nature of a man is brought forth. It is then when we see the character of the individual. It is then we are able to tell if he is mature enough to grin and bare it, or subject his fellow man to his complaints and woes.

Player distribution.  There isn't a single game where the players in low and mid level states or ranges are the same as when the the game was relatively new.  No matter if there is down leveling or not.

The only reasons I can think of where an individual will take their 80 and downlevel is for crafting as in getting more ingredients instead of buying them, or helping people.  As far as those go I would imagine many simply grind gold and buy the materials.  And as far as helping others that also would give us a small cross section  of people, in my opinion.

I think *think* there are quite a few people still who leveled one character to 80 and don't care about alts or going back to lower level areas.  Spitballing, but say there are 50% or more that don't do anything but log on for level 80 content.    Take into account natural dissolution of the player base along with those that only log in for the end game and that is going to make it seem alot fewer players are on regularly.

Now, there are also new players every single day who bought the game, or got it as a gift or whatnot.  Merry Christmas!  But every mmo is like an isolated island.  The populaton can't keep up.  The people eat all the damn cocounuts and some die off and the rest can't procreate enough to make up for it due to lack of nutrients.

Man....wake up still tipsy and this is what happens.  Don't hate me!

This.. the problem is at gw2 it went so far. people played all there was and left, leaving an population of people behind to small to have fun with the mechanics that worked fine when there were 5 times more people.

 Sadly, you wake up tipsy and are able to make more sense than 90% of the crap I read on this site. Some people are so dead set against a title that they forget reason and common logic. Happens in every single MMO I have ever been a part of.

To the OP,

I can promise you that this game will be around just as long or longer than its predecessor GW1. I would say you can expect many years out of Guild Wars 2.

It has had a booming 4 months and can only get better as we go.

We do not need this number.

We know GW2 had about 2-2.5mil players on launch.

We know the number of xfire users who played GW2 on launch (15-16k)

We know the number of xfire users who play GW2 now (3-3.5k)

Therefore we can calculate APPROXIMATELY how many players GW2 has right now:

First let's make 2-2.5mil 2.25, 15-16k -> 15.5, 3-3.5k -> 3.25k

if 15.5k is 2.25mil, how much is 3.25k?

x -> 3.25k

2.25mil -> 15.5k

x= 3250*2250000 / 15500 = 471774.2

about 471.774 people are still playing GW2 on a daily basis

Wrong.

Unless GW2 has very few players like under 100k or so, 0.1% or 10% makes almost no difference to its credibility, because if the game has few players already and we take the 0.1% of it then the samples wouldnt be enough.

Since the time played per day are thousands of hours we can see the samples of players Xfire has are more than 1k, which is quite enough already. Its just how Statistics works.

Being a fan of GW2 is good, but being anti logical is not.

Sheldon Cooper: Leonard, be serious. We're playing a game here. (Big Bang Theory)

12/26/12 10:12:39 AM#36

Actually today around noon GMT the servers seemed pretty full, more at America than Europe but do not look that bad.

How many players do you all think these server status reflects?

Leonard: Penny, you are on fire.
Penny: Yes, so is Sheldon.
[laughs]
Sheldon: Okay, that's it. I don't know how, but she is cheating. No-one can be that attractive and this skilled at a video game.
[walks away]
Penny: Wait, wait. Sheldon. Come back, you forgot something.
Sheldon: What?
Penny: This plasma grenade.
[explosion]
Penny: [laughs] Look! It's raining you.
Sheldon: You laugh now. You just wait until you need tech support. (Big Bang Theory)

x= 3250*2250000 / 15500 = 471774.2

about 471.774 people are still playing GW2 on a daily basis

We don't know that. You are assuming and you know what they say about opinions and assuming - everyone has one.

XFire is a measure of XFire users not an individual game's population. Your logic is off because you are using presales numbers to assume the game now has the same amount - I have no clue how many are playing GW2 - nor do I care.

Let us leave XFire out of this discussion as they are flawed numbers from the start.

Actually today around noon GMT the servers seemed pretty full, more at America than Europe but do not look that bad.

How many players do you all think these server status reflects?

I played on seafarer's rest and most maps were ghost towns while it was saying high population. If I were you I wouldn't trust those values.

boxsnd,

So these server status values represent players currently looged-in or number of accounts created on these servers?

I confess that it confuses me.

Best regards,

RJ

Leonard: Penny, you are on fire.
Penny: Yes, so is Sheldon.
[laughs]
Sheldon: Okay, that's it. I don't know how, but she is cheating. No-one can be that attractive and this skilled at a video game.
[walks away]
Penny: Wait, wait. Sheldon. Come back, you forgot something.
Sheldon: What?
Penny: This plasma grenade.
[explosion]
Penny: [laughs] Look! It's raining you.
Sheldon: You laugh now. You just wait until you need tech support. (Big Bang Theory)

Based on XFire numbers I would say that the game has about 1.6-1.9M total playerbase.

XFire is just a useless number SINCE we don't know the % of players in GW2 who use it. It could be 0.1% or 10%. Until we know, can't really say anything - this is on ANY GAME also.

First let's make 2-2.5mil 2.25, 15-16k -> 15.5, 3-3.5k -> 3.25k

if 15.5k is 2.25mil, how much is 3.25k?

x -> 3.25k

2.25mil -> 15.5k

x= 3250*2250000 / 15500 = 471774.2

Remember when GW2 was doing better than WoW on xfire how you guys were celebrating?
