I have a level 80 ranger, I stopped when I hit the gear grind WoW is famous for. Good enough?

Not really, as there is no gear grind (except for the 2 ascended peaces... But i got those at lvl 55 engi), atleast our combat isnt a dragonquest/ final fantasy knockoff.

Grats Pirate101 on GOTY, it wasn't my choice, but it would've been my second choice.  I do love me some Pirate101, and so do kids (we're all kids at heart right?). 

I had no doubts that TESO was going to win most anticipated.  Among all my friends I've made over the decades of playing online, the vast majority say that they will probably be moving to it at least for awhile, and I'm one of them.  I might actually find something better than WoW or Rift O_o

Star Citizen is one of the "darkhorse" titles I've been looking into since it was announced.  I'm a sim junkie and a space junkie....so it might be just for me :D

Another one I had no doubts about, LoL has such a large playerbase, like 1% of thier players could vote to win it probably, jk lol.  I drop in to get my Yorick fix every once in awhile :)

I am guessing that the people who voted for TESO most likely are the people who actually took the time to read more about the game, often from original source. Obviously when just reading what forum posters have to say about the game does make people think TESO will be a bad game. Thruth is both sides don't know untill they actually are able to play the game though I can defenitly understand it got the vote pure what we already know. I havn't seen a good constructive topic "bashing" TESO with proper info as most of the "bash" topic are just ramblings with no true info in it. The most populair comments are often " it's just like WOW" which continue's to just tell "Hey I have a very limited playstyle and the only way I am able to play is how I have played WOW"

As for the results: Yes I am suprised, but congrats to the winners never the less.

One thing I find funny is that this site has covered Pirates101 allot, yet now suddenly people want to play it because it has won? Perhaps it has great/good feature's, but it aint my visual style of game.

Me finding it hilarious that Pirates 101 took GOTY has nothing to do with being or not being a fan of GW2.  I bought GW2 on day 1 I have a level 8 character I am far FAR from a "fanboi" of this game. 

I can't figure out if the joke is on GW2 for losing to a game like Pirates 101 or on MMORPG for having to list a game like Pirates 101 as THEIR players choice Game of the Year.

I am glad GW2 didn't win. It is the single most unfun MMO I have played. My GoTY would be TSW. It may be too different for some but those investigation missions are epic. Once I get to the gear grid of a end game I will be done this the game though.

You're full of it. Not saying GW2 is a bad game. Just compare it to GW1, then play WoW and tell me that's not the direction they were going. They as much admitted it themselves when development began.

A few hardcore players liking the game so much that they don't consider it a grind, versus the mechanic lending itself to players repeatedly running the same dungeons over and over again to GRIND tokens to buy gear are two different things.

When there's a Dragonquest and/or Final Fantasy (tactics) MMO that is a better game than Pirates, I think you'll have a point.

Asking you to be objective is probably a waste of time. Sorry "your" game lost.

Disregarding the last comment you made, this is a poll by the players.  The community of that game got together and all voted on the game they enjoyed playing.

It's my assumption that there was a tweet or something by the company asking for them to vote as it seems an impossible choice when against mainstream MMOs.

That is not to say that games that aren't mainstream can't be GotY material, but simply it's almost impossible for a fan vote to do such if the company didn't step in in some way and ask their fans to vote.

Edit:  It may also be a case that people saw their game wasn't going to win, but didn't want GW2 to win either.  Naturally that would mean voting the next up in bulk just for the laugh.  This is something that my friends from WoW (and a few from GW1) did and they tried to talk others into doing so as well as a joke.

This is pretty rude, how about you actually try out Wizard101, or Pirate101 before calling the company a joke. You obviously know nothing about KI since they do respect other cultures.. they have wizard101 in china and other countries currently. They do care about the players and ask us our opinions on things they add to the game.

Guild Wars 1 was released in 2005 and had 7 years to create GW2.

Wizard101 was released in 2008 and had 4 years to create P101.

GW had almost x2 more time to "create GW2" than Kingsisle had to "create P101".

The bottom line is, our community obviously cared about this awards more than GW2. Sorry! :)
