You do know that people were using trade chat channels and racial alliance chat to trade, right?  The person selling or buying in the channel is not necessarily in your area.  Chat bubbles are local.

I am a programmer but not in the gaming industry, my gut tells me it wouldnt be hard to create and it wouldnt be hard to have as an option. However, what I havent give much consideration to is would there be a pvp advantage for one over the other and my gut (without having a specific example) is that there would be.

That said, the Darkfall community is likely changing a lot and in some respects from a business side I totally think is the right move. The community I came from was extreemly toxic even though much of the gaming principles I agreed with so we are seeing a change in the game and most likely the community as well.

Hmmm, I can see where it might give an advantage in PvP, so a fix may be to only allow them if the two characters are in line of sight of each other or set a distance that beyond that point you can't see them, kinda like sound only carries so far, but both of those ideas would take some extra time to code I'm sure.

I think at its core this is a good visual of exactly what AV wanted to change about an MMO. Not just the fact of all the chat but the fact that everyone is sitting down not doing anything in game other than chatting

Invalid argument.  Some people are sitting around doing nothing.  Other people are trading, finding groups.

Name one valid arguement for not putting in toggleable chat bubbles.  If you don't want them, uncheck them and BOOM, normal Darkfall.

Why put in a feature that the vast majortiy of your players are not intrested in? I am not sure how long you were in the darkfall community but I was in for a long time and from the start, the vast majority of players wouldnt be all that intrested in chat bubbles and a good amount of them might have even decided not to play because of them so why bother with the dev time?

 

AV wanted people to be in battles, combat, running around and exploring. Not sitting around chatting. Is it common that people sit around in chat to gather groups and trade? sure. Is it an expression of VAST inexperience to think that there isnt also a lot of simple social chit chat going on as well? yes

You seem to have "forgotten" the countless hours that the vast majority of the server spent doing nothing other than swimming into a wall, or sitting in a rigor pyramid getting their defenses to skill up.

Oh yeah... there was that countless hours of "doing nothing".  I'm sure that none of those players did any chatting with their group mates during any of that stuff though.  Nope, not in DarkFall.

Line of sight restrictions would prevent that case.  The tree is between you and therefore you can't see each other.  Not that I like chat bubbles, I don't but its all how they would be implemented.

I am confused. 'chat bubbles' are literally EXACTLY all the features that exist in chat in DF1 other than the location of the chat window itself. that is it!

the vast majority of time when you trade the other person isnt even on your screen and even if he is it doesnt matter because everyone usually meets at the bank to make the trade anyway and you know who you are talking to and who to trade with. On  a technnical I see very little advantage to chat bubbles but if you like them you like them that is fair enough.

So why would people toggle it on?  It'd be confusing and a UI mess in crowded areas.  It wouldn't work for long range, so if you were in a sparsely populated area I guess it'd be fine so you know the one other dude standing there is the one talking to you.

But is that to the entire character?  I mean if there was a finger visible would suddenly a massive chat bubble appear?  Or would it need to be a calculation from each of your characters ears to the mouth of anyone speaking?

There is a chat for global, clan, clan alliance, local, trade, and racial chats. Now, why the hell would i want chat bubbles just to talk to people?

so help me understand, you actually sat down and thought to yourself SEANMCAD and justin clearly are people who support AFK swimming. They actually think that aspect of the game is of good design.

There are two options here. either A. you actually think that or B. you are being deceptive. One option makes you look stupid while the other option makes you look dishonest.
