OP  12/20/12 5:02:54 PM#1

So awhile back I got it in my head that I wanted to create a game, something the world has never seen before. I wanted to make something that player's have been wanting for a very long time. I know your thinking who are you and we have heard this before. Well friends I can only tell you that through my life everything I have set my mind on I have followed through and achieved. Now you have no reason to believe me and that is understandable but I will still post this in hopes that players want to be part of something big.

I have put a lot of time into working on this game, it will be a scifi mmo and I am currently looking to pay players who love video games to come up with player models and armor models for this game. You come up with the ideas of what you think looks epic and what you think games need to look like. I will pay for the rights to your artwork if I find it to be very professionally done and what I believe players want.

If your like me you have to be tired of waiting for something to come out. So we can start making what we want and stop waiting for what "they" wont make.

This is not going to be your typical carebear video game. This will be a epic scale sandbox. This will have a futuristic setting. This will have crafting on a scale you have never seen before.

There are many things I want to tell you about the game that are so original no other game has thought of it but well that would result in someone stealing my ideas. So we will just have to see.

Unfortunatly you will not see this game anytime within the next 2 years because I believe to make a game that is truly epic the time must be put into it and the testing has to be extensive.

Now feel free to hate on what I posted that is your opinion but for those who are amazing artists and want to get paid to show your work off feel free to PM me.

If you feel that your work could be what we are needing make sure you get the copyrights to it so that it can be attained in a legal way and thus protecting yourself.

I would also like to add that my inspiration comes from a game I belive to be one of the best games ever made called Anarchy Online.

On a side note this game will not be funded by gaming companies that can get their hands on it and ruin the scope of the game because they want to make as much cash as they can. This will be a game made by gamers for gamers.

Too the future of gaming

I would also like to add at a future date we will be looking for computer progammers to hire, so stay tuned for that.

One thing I am very excited about is the voice-overs for this game. I want you the players to do the voice-overs for the game. So when the time is right players with unique voices will be offered a chance to send in their voice to see if they have what it takes to be part of the game. This most likely will be volunteer only but we will work on paying for the airfare for you.

On release of the game also any mods to the UI that player's seem to love we will offer to buy the rights for the mod in order to give back to the community that has put the time into making it a fun place to play.

Do you have any actual experience or funding?

I have been playing MMO's since 2000. I have played almost every MMO released since then until now to some extent. Some of course more then others. Some simply to play to find out why they work and why the fail.

Honestly as someone who has played video games for so long I would not want someone who has had experience making video games. Well thats just silly you say. But lets be sensible about this, look at what has been released over the last 12 years. The amount of originality in the gaming industry is few and far between.

While there will be someone overseeing the project who does have experience, absolute control of this game will rest with you the gamers and myself. This project will be made by the gamers!

If I could post all of what I have come up with and how original it is I would be positive that people would be blown away. But unfortunatly I want to keep the lid shut on this because I do not want one of these large game companies to take what I have created and make some broken version of this and try to hurry it to release before us. This will only ruin the whole purpose of making something truly unique and original for gamers.

As far as the funding goes we have a decent amount of money for the things I have posted above. We will more then likely be using kickstarter for the funding of this game. As we want to keep the power of the creation in the hands of the gamers.

At this time we are only looking for the art to put together what we believe will be enough to show you a small chunk of the game that will leave you in awe.

This game is not about making the money to buy our employee's nice houses and expensive cars. My goal is to put the money made from this game back into the game. I want content released much faster then what we are given with games today.

Sigh....

Good luck!   Hope you learn a lot while doing this.

If you are holding out for the perfect game, the only game you play will be the waiting one.

Ok so no experience making games.

How about experience with programming?

Or even experiencing in managaing a team?

How about just experiencing in managing a project?

Quit worrying about other players in a game and just play.

A truly unexpected reply.

Experience with making games is counter productive to this project at least from my stand point. Like I said I will be overseeing the project but someone with experience will be working directly underneath me. This gives us the experience needed for making the game and the fresh prospective from the gamer who created it.

As far as experience managing a team and a project I have lead men into battle as a former United States Marine and managing others at various other jobs. So managing is not a problem.

Deadlines will be realistic, deadlines will be met.

But the original post was not to discuss so much about the game but about looking to pay gamers to offer their artwork. So lets not sidetrack this post too much.

I am one for proving what you can do, not talking about what you can do. I will have the majority of this project done before I start posting it on kickstarter and asking anyone for anything. I wouldn't pay for unexperience without proof so I wouldn't ask anyone else to do the same.

Without a programmer next to you. I don't know how you will even know what IS possible. You can imagine all sorts of wild ideas but someone has to be able to see that and put it into code ... AND... you have the added fun of latency over a network so there is a limit on how much you can pass at once to get good response times, then wrap it all in security... unless you want to have a bunch of client side things that people exploit all the time.

Just the idea that you are starting on art before programming is scary, to me.

I think you might have the dream but without at least one full time programmer (usually the person that starts the project), you are throwing more money at it than needed.

Maybe I'm biased because I program but if you don't have a programmer early on to tell you what is impossible, I'm calling doom and gloom.

Kickstarter BTW does not regularly fund ideas, they regularly fund things where people are mostly, if not, all the way done.

Go look at the mmos that get funded and those that don't. The funded usually have at least prototypes out.

The game I'm making has 4 notebooks full of specs and rules and it took me a long time to make those and things came and went when weighed against other things. It explains how the game works and the systems behind it. I bought another journal last week just for art assets but I never started there, my goodness. It seems so vapid a plan.

Again taking this post off topic as it wasn't to discuss the game but more to recruit. But I will reply one last time. If I made it seem as if I have no computer programmers working on this I apologize. My post above about computer programmers was in the future we will be needing more and I want them to be "players."

And in my post before yours I mention that I will not even bother with kickstarter for sometime. Because I will give the players proof before I ever ask for money.

Ever heard the phrase "I want to believe"?

I remember when I heard about the founding of 38 Studios. How Curt, who was first and foremost a gamer, built a company to make a great game. I heard about how he got R.A. Salvatore and Todd McFarlane in on the IP and how Copernius was going to be the most incredible thing ever.

And then I played Reckoning. It wasn't a bad game, but it wasn't the revolutionary, mind-blowing experience I'd been hoping for and it made me worry for Copernicus. Then the company went under and so did my hopes for a truly amazing MMORPG made by gamers for gamers.

I wish you the best of luck. I'm no artist unfortunately, so I don't have anything to offer you in terms of what you are asking for. If you find yourself in the market for writers however, shoot me a pm.

Pauly, you have no idea how complex the final product is when it comes to video games. If you have no programming experience at all, and no multimedia disign experience, you have no chance at making a game. That's even more true if you plan to build a team with other individuals that have no experience. It doesn't matter how good your ideas are. If you truly want to make a video game, you have to start where everyone in your position started, by learning to program. Even after you learn to program, you still won't have any experience making video games. Which was something you said you didn't want; people with experience making games. So at the bare minumum you need to learn to program, or learn high level multimedia design, and form a group out of people that can do one or the other as well.

You at least seem to have the motivation. Keep riding that. Buy some C++ books. Self teach yourself if you have to. If you have enough time to dedicate to this project, it won't take long to pickup programming. Picking up a class or two at your local college/community college can help you find other individuals that are learning the same skills. It would be an easy way to start your group.

At the very least, this project should give you some perspective as to how complicated these games actually are. A lot of gamers seem to think that their experience as consumers gives them 1st hand knowledge as to how to make a good game, but it's just not true.

If you are able to think like a designer, then you should have found a number of mechanics & features that games implemented & worked. Furthermore, you would understand why they worked, and why others failed.

Short of that, all you will really be doing is trying to make your ideal game, piggy backing off of other people's skills. That's no way to make a game. Every good game has a clear vision that is grounded in reality (what is physically possible to program and run smoothly). You  need to have that perspective if you want to have a good game.

Everyone has great ideas, few actually know which ones will actually help make a game good.

While I value both of your opinions this will not even remotely slow down this project or deter me in anyway. At no point have I ever said that we do not have the experience on our team. I said that "I" do not. And I will only be overseeing the game to make sure that what is finished in original and unique.

There are 2 kinds of people in this world, those that talk about and those that do. The project will be accomplished as I have never failed a mission before.

Thanks again for your input

AND... you have the added fun of latency over a network so there is a limit on how much you can pass at once to get good response times, then wrap it all in security... unless you want to have a bunch of client side things that people exploit all the time.

Developers have lots of ideas of their own.  Why would they put the time into your idea when they would be better served putting their efforts into their own design?

I will jump on board.  I have no actual experience in programming and very little computer knowledge apart from actually playing games.  I can type, but that is about it.  I once changed a processor and got some of that heat shield paste on my shorts, so I can at least do that.

I will, of course, work for free.
