Originally posted by grimgryphon Great, not enough that MMO's are dumbed down to the lowest possible level these days, now you want to take our language there too. BTW, your use of hyperbole in your examples is quite good. So is the irony of your OP.

People now jump on me for calling my character a "toon". But, that's what I learned to call them from my guildies in SWG. But...the term that I hate is "plox" |

Originally posted by asmkm22 A few years ago you saw the word used next to never. Then, some sort of outbreak took place, and we now have everyone and their dogs spewing it up all over the place. The quest to be clever has reduced it's impact to squat. Similar to the case of "straw man argument". Instead of coming across as bright and original (which is obviously the intention), you just end up looking like a putz. Overuse seems to be a problem with a lot of the examples in this thread. It's funny, much like the titles that make up this the genre, the gamers who play them are just as unoriginal and stagnant "I agree that "unimaginable complexity" is absurd, but so is comparing a single player game to an mmo. It's like comparing masturbation to sex, they are similar in some respects, but really are not comparable." -jimdandy26 |

Greed / Greedy producers, related to that "MBA's, accountants" making games Game producers are companies. These companies are created in order to generate profit. It would be nice if we all could accept it as a fact. These MBA's are people that have education which is suitable for being in a management of a company. These people make the strategic decisions. It is how companies work. MMOs are product like any other. There is a strange habit shared by some MMO fans who think these games are something else than lets say a car from the business perspective. It isnt. You make cars to make profit. It is the same with games. Business is about numbers. Playing: Nothing atm My game concept thread: http://www.mmorpg.com/discussion2.cfm/thread/369707 (any feedback appreciated) |

Zerg, the term is just badly used in MMO's, should stay in the starcraft universe.

"Entitled." I don't know how or why this word has slithered into every single topic of discussion but it must self-immolate in the most excruciating and spectacular way possible. It doesn't help that it's broadly misused both here and elsewhere, applied to anyone who has a complaint, request, or desire. (Nevermind that innovation, discovery, freedom, and change of all kind most often results from wanting something beyond what one currently has). It's just as provocative and dismissive as "fanboi" and "hater", a way for cranky gamers to wave away the other side's points without actually engaging in a discussion. My grandparents' generation called my parents' generation selfish, my parents called my generation lazy and my generation calls my kids' generation entitled. Wonder what the next generalized putdown will be.

Originally posted by Cecropia I agree that they do get used a bit more, but I would consider that a good thing. People probably didn't use words like hyperbole 10 years ago because they never really knew of them, much less their applications or meanings. I don't see the problem being people using those words more, but that the same fallacious arguments are being used to defend a position as before. It's just that now the words to call those arguments out are more widely known, which is a good thing. If you don't want someone throwing the word hyperbole around, then don't make hyperbolic statements. If you don't want "strawman" accusations made against you, then don't ignore or distort their position in an attempt to better frame your retort. It's pretty simple really.
As for this thread, my vote is the term "causation does not imply correlation" or any such varient.

Originally posted by SirFubar I'll defend that term. When playing WoW Alterac Valley or, pretty much any quest in GW2, I very much feel like I'm part of a mindless zerg simply swarming over the objective. |

Originally posted by asmkm22 Ok, lets not rathole with a discussion about the intricacies in the use of the word hyperbole. You're trying to tell me that people on these forums can fully understand the nuances between exaggeration and hyperbole and therefore use the word properly. The very same people who post every day without the least bit of awareness of spelling, grammar, capitalization, and punctuation. Yeah, right. As far as I'm concerned, the world hyperbole is everyone's favorite, "look, I can use big words too" expression. In most cases, the word exaggerate clearly communicates what the person thinks of any other poster's overstatement. That's why I'd like to see gamers stop using it. Can we get back on topic now? |
