Honestly, Trion has done a better job with this expansion and their relentless content updates than any other company that I am aware of.  I have been seeing the SL advertisements everywhere, but that may be because I visit a lot of gaming sites.  I'd also like to know how a company really gets those subscription numbers to start climbing again once you are past the initial release boom.

It seems to be one of those games that no matter what Trion do, it will always be viewed as a minority mmo.

How do they clmb the player numbers into the millions?

I think the main flaw of RIft is that despite the overall quality and polish, it's just way too generic at the end of the day. The soul-system and so called "dynamic" events just don't overweight the basic "tab, kill, loot, gain rep, farm tokens...just like you've done for years in other games already"-feel to it.

Trion seems to be the most capable studio nowadays. NOW IF ONLY FOR ONCE they would have the balls to INNOVATE instead of copy+paste. To me it looks like everything in Rift is something one of their devs has done in a former title before -and what many players have played for years already.

Trion should have elaborated rifts and dynamics and stuck to what the game originally promised, instead of going the "get gear + raid" way. Perhaps we would have giant NPC-fortresses spawning by now, laid under siege for days by the players until someone can even set a foot into it...and once a server manages to get in, there are instances and tons of stuff to be found in there.

I really feel like if enough players suggested this it would get done.  Trion is just that responsive.  I was one of the people who repeatedly suggested in the suggestion forums that they add housing and they kind of blew me away with how well they did it.

So far no one has pulled this off.  Its constant growth from the start or nothing.

Some games have managed to rise for a year or two after an initial dip (EQ2) but none have yet been able to fall off after release and fully recover.  I don't think its impossible, but we havent seen it yet.

The key is managing retention.  Rift has struggled since day 1with long term retentiion.  People (general) have a strong initial impression yet are unsubbed a few months later.  Super fast leveling syndrome?  Maybe, but no one knows for sure.

The PvP community wanted more meaningful open world PvP, Trion answered with instanced conquest.

People wanted new low/midlevel zones, Trion responded with the entire expansion for 50+

Doesnt hurt to suggest because they listen to a lot of them, but a lot of the most requested items have been ignored.

Eve pulled it of, and is doing it since release increasing the subscribbers each year. And its one of the oldest mmos on the market. It can be done.

Rift is doing reasonably well in regards to player retention compared to most mmos released during the last 5 years. There is huge competition on the market and even games like wow are losing the players due to age and playerbase spread out.

the innovative games are 1 month hit recently and hit rock bottom after 1-2 months.

You constantly bash on the Rift whenever and hovever you can in every posible topic so i would not sugest taking this guy seriously as im not even sure if hes playing, and if he is thats just being hypocrite.

It all sounds like the cry of miniority in rift that wants one thing that majority didint want and cant get over it.

No one that actualy "PLAYS" the game wanted low or mid lv zones. NO ONE. Content locust players thinking about coming back ? maybe. Actual players didint want that.

If you actualy visit PTS often you have opportunity to talk to DEVS frequently about new ideas and problems. Trion Rift division have one of the best player to dev comunication right now.

Right now there are only handful of quality mmos on the market that are doing fine or great. Rift is one of them. Not saying its not w/o its flaws, but they are not where you say.

Biggest one would be cpu capped engine, weird artstyle for many (took me a LOOOONG time to get used to) but a very high quality one.

Id say if anything the fact that Rift is so alien for many players is the main reason why it dont have as many players as you would expect.

If Rift will have real future like Eve or will plumet like most mmos will depends on their next expansion and the willingless to improve the game engine performance considerably.

EvE has been in more or less constant growth since launch.  It never had a decline phase.  there are plenty of games with no decline phase in their first couple of years.  EQ, FFXI, WoW, EvE, LOTRO (though aided here by lifetime subs) to name a few.

None since LOTRO though

here is reality.    ----------------------------------------------> here you are, very far removed from reality

I dont think you have any clue what a content locust is.   "content locusts" usually only care about max level content.  They are the people that want to get 1-60 as fast as humanly possible so they can burn through everything Rift churns out.  Rifts patch cycle is designed to appease the content locusts.

Take a look at those games in the post above I mentioned that grew in playerbase over the first few years.  Take EvE out because its a completely different type of game (but fits much of the following anyway.)  You know what the rest all have in common?  Large game worlds (at launch, before any expansions).  Not a single one of those games was 'top heavy' in content.

They all gave much love and care to their races, with their own leveling areas and cities.

And many people that play the game wanted new low/midlevel zones.  But yes, its more of a request of players that left then of players that still play.  And it might not be phrased as specifically that.  Small world, linear leveling path...these are the same thing.  These people no longer play because Trion has made it clear that max level is really all that matters.  Sure they threw together a few IAs but thats it.

You are (I gather) a hardcore raider, and you look at things from the hardcore raider (minority) perspective.  You don't understand that people typically enjoy leveling up new characters in games with big worlds to do so in.  You only care that Rift keeps the max level stuff flowing.  And Rift has done quite well at catering to the max level gear grinders, be it raiders or dungeons or dailies.  They have catered to the true content locusts.

And what has it gotten them?  A game less than 2 years old with only 8 NA servers.  And no, they arent mega servers, just somewhat bigger than launch servers.  Maybe listening to the players that enjoyed Rift but not enough to stick around would be a good idea, especially if what they are saying coincides with past industry successes?

I have seen people (maybe you?) talk down to people that like to play alts or value the scope of a game world. But these people are the most loyal customers you will ever have if you have what they seek.  If they like living in your game world they will kick off their shoes and stay a few years.  If they see its just a roller coaster ride from point a to point b theyll give it a ride once, maybe twice, and then head over to the next park.

The server capacity was doubled according to the devs, "somewhat bigger" sounds like an understatement. And the adoption rate for the expansion by preorder was >13%, exceeding Trion's goal of 7%. Based on that alone, I'd say they are happy about where the game is currently.

I actualy hate raiding, but i play everything in the game till i achive everything there is in the game. And even tho i do raid (as its part of the game) in top eu Raiding guild, i still personaly preffer the Rift open world content as a part of the game i enjoy the most.

I hate leveling alts as im strong supporter of 1 character in game as your personification, if i could help it i would play only a game with no classes or ability to switch to any class.

Reason ? I put insane ammount of time in to my character to improve it to perfection. If i would have to play alt it would feel like a waste of time to me untill i get every posible thing on my main (wich is close to imposible in Rift)

I do understand where you are coming from, but i dont support it as its a short term thinking. How long do you think that kind of new content would last ? 1 day ? 12h ?

New zones are uneccesary. Improving exisiting ones, yes that i can agree. for example the tutorial zone is not showing the actual experiance in SL at all right now as its liniear, where SL gameplay is absolutely not lienar at all, and the whole hub system can be thrown out of the window. ITs actualy more open and focused on exploring than Gw2, and closer to the upcoming ESO idea, tho not the same thing.

If you want casual mmo go play Gw2 that catters to your player type. I absolutly could not find any reason in playing after reaching lv 80 and getting my gear in few days. After that there was nothingto do no progression for my character, no continuation of its progression in pvp, spvp was a separate part of the game and so on. In other words NO ENDGAME. Only thing to do is to roll another alt. Did i mention i hate playing alts ?

So ther we go, i like playing games with actual endgame content, and Rift is one of the very few games on the market that actualy do have it and, release new one quick enough for me to have things to do.

So go away and dont spoil the fun of the ppl that enjoy the game, with your constant basing and hating the game in every topic. You should just go and play something you like that catters to your player type. Obviously Rift is not. It catters to my player type.

I really feel like if enough players suggested this it would get done.  Trion is just that responsive.  I was one of the people who repeatedly suggested in the suggestion forums that they add housing and they kind of blew me away with how well they did it.

Wait, so you hate raiding but you still do it?  Doesnt make any sense to me.

And when people stop posting hyerbole (or in some cases flat out lies), or stop saying things that amount to 'Rift housing is not like eq2 housing, only someone who has never played rift would say that' Ill stop calling out the bullcrap.

And if someone answers an honest question (what does Rift have to do to increase subs) Im going to give an honest answer.

If Rift doesnt care about increasing subs in the long run they can continue catering to the content locusts.  If they want to grow they have to spread out the base, not pile things on to top.

They are incresing the subs, not losing them. Read here. Its actualy beyond the Devs expectations.

And only one with grudge against the game are you m8. Eq2 system is similar but not the same of what Rift have, and it was only not to long ago changed to the form it is now. I still preffer Rift housing version as it is right now to the Eq2 one. I admit tho that back in the days i loved Eq2 Housing system.

Btw content locust are players who play in low lv zones not the other way around. I stick with Rift for 1.5 years (even tho i played every other major mmo in the meantime as well)

Id say Trion Aims for player retention, instead of lots of new players that quit after reaching max lv. In long run its A LOT better way to do it as you have more potential customers paying for the game. Its the same thing Eve is doing, but in a diferent way.

Btw i leave it to the people reading to judge who is lies here. no point arguing about this with you that have biased view about the game, and obviously dont enjoy it and tries to convince people enjoying it to not play it, for the sake of doing it.

Speaking of dimensions:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LItSdAD6gX4

Found that on YouTube... that's the most amazing thing I've ever seen in an MMO.  I watched that while trying to decide if I wanted to play Rift or not.  I got the trial called Rift Lite and visited this dimension in the video and O.M.G. it's amazing.  I really like what Trion is doing and my only regret is not starting sooner and now having to power through the lower content to get to the amazing stuff like what's in this video.
