Ive been off the MMO "world" for a long time, please tell the good news!
What changed in our MMORPGs? Did anything changed on the monetization model? Did anything changed on the design of games? Any new game with anything original and new to look forward? Any new MMORPG that manages to keep our attention for many months?
Thank you for your attention.

If by any chance you are a young lady getting married, I have the "something old", "something borrowed", and "something blue" for you. The "silver sixpence in your shoe" is for the cash shops. Once upon a time.... |

When going by these forums all MMOs are great just before release and suck 1 week after.

Originality is overrated. people who are hung up on this term can wait for ever. However OP you should keep an eye out for Archage , Repopulation and Star citizen if you looking for something different and non themepark. |

In fact, I believe that the MMO community / players changed more than the genre itself. I would emphasize the shift in preferences of mmo players more towards sandbox. It seems that people are fed up with themeparks after what I would call "Post-wow era" during which we have been bombarded by generic themeparks which people like to call "WoW clones". These games seem to no longer be so popular and demanded by the community. You might have heared that SWTOR failed. Last major themepark released was GW 2. It is not a traditional themepark and attempts at changing some of the established themepark concepts to distinguish itself from WoW and similar games. What may be original also happens to be slightly controversial and the reaction of the community towards some of their changes (no trinity, no gear grind,...) was bipolar. I think people want something fresh, but in a different way. When The Elder Scroll Online was first announced, we were provided with information that indicated that yet another generic themepark which tries to take advantage of famous IP to grab subs is going to land. The reaction of the community was clear. Deliver this game and you will fail even harder than SWTOR. There havent been any new information for many months and suddenly we are getting info which indicate that they are trying to shift the game more towards Elder Scrolls than WoW and also distinguish itself from standard themeparks. I do not think that most people want pure sandbox games. I believe that in the following years we will be getting some sort of mix...maybe themeparks with sandbox elements. It seems that the industry is already reflecting this shift towards sandboxes since if you take a look at MMOs in development, how many of them are WoW clones? To me, it seems that the sandbox element is growing stronger and we will be getting different type of games in the years 2014 - 2024 than in 2004-2014. If you asked what has changed about MMOs since 2010, I would say nothing YET. Come back 4 years from now and ask again, the answer will be more interesting then. Playing: Nothing atm My game concept thread: http://www.mmorpg.com/discussion2.cfm/thread/369707 (any feedback appreciated) |
