I got so much trouble on my mind Refuse to lose.

OP  10/28/12 8:49:36 AM#1

Let me just ask you : What did you expect ?

We can all agree that some people here had unrealistic expectations. And thats putting it lightly.

"Savior of MMORPG" , "Sandbox" ... to say the few.

And than some people woke up...

Ouch.

What we have in fact is a MMO "lite" with very high production values. Some new ideas - some implemented good some bad.

Its also  a spiritual sucessor to GW1 which does some things better (more open world) and some worse (skill system)

But is it a bad game ?

I value quality of the game by value i get from it.

I got over 300 hours out of it so far. And while I myself log in much less these days. The fact that i can log in whenever I want makes me sure I will get at least 300 more. And the Halloween events just come to show how Anet will add content constantly to the game.

I find this an excellent value for B2P product.

So in short. It maybe didnt live to everyones expectations ( It did to mine . I pretty much expected all the shortcommings )

But it does not make it a bad game. And certanly not a game not worth to have.

So even if you are leaving you will probably be back.

Peace out ;)

What I expected?  I really didn't expect this game to keep me longer than GW1.  I recall the launch of GW1 and the fanfare to accompany it.  I admit my expectations were high for that one, being swept up in the moment and all.

Yet, I found GW1 lacked any real longevity.  It was crafted well, but I just became bored by the repetitive play after about a week or two.

Despite ANETs proclamations of this taking all the good from GW1 and making a true MMORPG, I didn't have high hopes because I had been on this rodeo before.

To my surprise, the game lasted longer than a week or two for me.  But it still suffers from longevity, as far as I am concerned.

I find it rather shallow on the RPG aspect, so I am a bit reluctant to compare it to traditional MMORPGs.  If I compare it to a game like D3, I have no reservations in saying it was a very good game.

Its not a bad game but its a bad mmo. Why? Because it lacks everything that makes a mmo into a mmo. High production? I dont even see it. The game looks and plays like a budget free to play game.

This game is awesome!

A few seconds ago I just did this:

I saw a vista on a high mountain and could not find a way to reach it, until I understood that I had to climb up from the other side. So I walked through a tunnel and passed a camp, that I already knew. Only this time there was an attack from underground which led to a boss fight. So I stayed a while and enjoyed the fight.

Afterwards I continued my search for a way to the vista and discovered a cave full with spiders. The first spiders were easy but then there came a bigger one which called for help of its minions. Desperately I just rushed through all spiders to where I assumed to be the exit to the vista and I found it. But there were still the spiders behind me! I jumped over cliffs and stones to get rid of the majority of them and succeeded.

So in the end it was me against big mama and one of her children, it was a long fight and I almost died several times. I had to use all my skills and tactics to survive. When I finally claimed the vista it really felt like the end to an epic adventure!

No other MMO on the market gives me the same excitement.

Maybe its not a MMO...

And what is MMO today , every game with some maner of progression is named MMO. And what we call traditional MMOs are just boring endless grinds with static combat. I really dont feel like playing them anymore.

Its a good game , its online ...  thats wath maters

2012 was not a great year for new MMOS.  Although all decent in their own way I found SWTOR, TERA, and The Secret World disappointing.  So to me GW2 was going ot be the MMO of 2012 for me.  Like the others GW2 has a lot to offer, if not more so.  For a one time purchase only game -even better.  But what sank GW2 was the repetitive level progression.  Whether you're lvl 10 or lvl 35 the overall game play is mostly the same: personal quest, drive by public quests or escort runs.

Arenanet made some bold attempts at redefining some of the common limitations MMOs of the past have commonly shared:  eliminating the dedicated healer class(es) and making grouping more streamlined.  But to me those changes hindered the game rather than helped.  For many MMO players a dedicated healer is an alternative M/O that they prefer over slashing and nuking.  Good, reputable healers can be highly desirable.  In terms of grouping the grouping element depersonalized the cohesion element of organizied grouping.   Yeah its convenient to have instant walk by PUGs but to me the change has watered down the grouping benefits of camaraderie and overall immersion.

The lack of distinguishable level progression, in terms of character growth: abilities, gear, and gaining access to higher level only areas sank and eventually uninstalled GW2 on my computer.  My opinions only of course.  I'm happy for those that enjoy the game.  Just not for me.

It does matter when people have been expecting a good mmo and then buy this game labled as a mmo and find that it does not play like a mmo. This is just my opinion of why the game failed for me.

After playing the first beta, I expected to be into this game much longer than I was. It's a shame that feeling fizzled out quickly. Variety was the problem and that variety will improve over time.

A problem I have though is that most of this content that's been added is temporary. Which is a shame because this games needs all the activities it can get. Sure, they will come round again every year with changes and additions.. but I'd rather most of the things added were there all the time instead.

Well my expections were quite right. The game was not my cup of tea at all 5/10. I loved GW1 but cant lift a finger in GW2.

They made GW2 like those sims mmos, where everything you do doesnt really matter. And thats how i feel about GW2. Nothing impact the world. Those lousy Quest hubs are just copy past from one world to another.

Since 2 Month i didnt touch it, nor i tend to come back ever again.

Btw. Anet send me 2 copies but i paid just for once. I guess they do that  on porpose, since even a free game wont attract people to play it. Rip GW2.

Arenanet: i trusted you with GW1 but with GW2, you got me once and you wont fool me twice!

Agreed.

Self-pity imprisons us in the walls of our own self-absorption. The whole world shrinks down to the size of our problem, and the more we dwell on it, the smaller we are and the larger the problem seems to grow.

GW2 is a great new beginning

people who are complaining don't even know what they want because they complain about WoW as well as every other MMO that tries to redefne the genre.

GW2 is not perfect, but it had a really good start and it will only get better now, judging by the absolutely incredible first event/update release.

If you havent tried halloween event yet, do yourself a favor and give it a try.

some of the most challenging, most adrenaline pumping levels i've had in the last few years of MMO were in the last few hours playing the flavoured pvp events.

the hide n seek level is frigging awesome, the graphics are incredible and the fact that the entire city of Lion Arch was changed so much goes to show that they're taking gave development seriously.

the biggest advantage is that there's absolutely no time commitment and once you purchase the game you can play or not play as much as you want. and what's even better is that you get an absolutely stunning and fun game for that price.

I've been playing for at least 500 hours now and it's been a blast.

I hate GW1, but I find GW2 to be a somewhat better game. I love that GW2 is a B2P game, but that is where my endorsement for the game stops. I jump in GW2 about 4 hours a week to break up the boredom of my regular mmo's.

Massively multiplayer? Check

Online? Check

RPG? Check

Sooooo please explain how GW2 is NOT an MMORPG.

It's prefectly fine to say "I didn't like GW2, it doesn't have the things I look for in  an MMO", but to make the claim that GW2 is not an MMORPG is simply absurd.

You could play GW2 by yourself, there isn't anything massively multiplayer about it. The amount of crappy instances in the game is mind-boggling. Guilds mean nothing and are chat rooms, and group encounters can be doneby random people running into each other not saying a word. Yawn.

There is a lot of stuff in the open world that you never can do alone. There are always players calling for help over the map chat in order to kill a giant mop, that ocasionally appears.

There is so much hard content and it is so much fun.

If I look at GW2 as a console game. It's a really good game just about as good as some of the Elder Scrolls games. If I look at it as an mmorpg I get angry and scared that this could be the direction of the genre.

What I expected :

Few months of fun in good themepark mmorpg.

I. What I wanted to check:

1. Will I like certain GW2 design choices & mechanics? Like:  a) further trade centralization - cross-server AH b) smaller character progression  c) small amount of skills, dependancy of weapon swapping and higher twitch combat  d) removal of trinity e) big separation of 'game modes' (sPvP, WvWvW, open world PvE)  f) further separation between means of achieving and things you achieve (rewards based on virtual currencies and getting them from diffrent activities - karma, various tokens, medalions)  g) further removal of co-dependancy and further increase of conveniance  h) Dynamic Events

2. Does B2P+Cash Shop  model does work for me in mmoprg's?

II.  What surprised me?

1) How Dynamic Events turned out to be designed and implemented.  Totally not what I was hoping.

2) Amount of hand-holding.

III. What are my "results"

AD. I- 1. I actually did not like all of those things I listed.

AD. I- 2. Still little too early to give definitive judgements as game released not long ago, althrough I realized this business model would not work for mmorpg of a difftent design - like more virtual world design I like.  So I can say it does not work for me.

AD. II-1.  and AD.II-2 - I have dont not enough research. Lesson learned. I will not play any mmorpg with more research.  GW2 was also my first in my lifetime game I pre-ordered. I won't do it again - it's bad for me as consumer.

I am not blaming 'whole world'.  I am disappointed in myself that I did not do enough research. I am bit disappointed that I did not like the game that I've spend both money and maybe even more improtantly time in.

GW2 what it does - it does good.  It helped me realized more clearly that It is very far from what I personally like in mmorpg's - so this lesson allowed me to know even more what I am looking for and hopefully avoid bad decision on what should I invest my time (and money) into mmorpg wise in future.

Freeloading mooches are the scourge of the gaming community.

IM still fairly new to the game, and I'm finding it refreshing myself. The activity hubs/ hearts are much better than chore/quest grinds of previous MMOs. The story mode is fun and entertaining and allows me to actually have some choices that actually effect the stories direction. The dynamic events are the best version of public quests that have been in any game yet.

The game can prove to have challenging content, the combat is pretty fun, overall the game mechanics are different but enjoyable. I personally believe the game is not faulted but the devs did  a great job and in my 14 years of MMOs this seems to be one of the better made and more enjoyable ones so far. My only fear is the social aspects. It's easy to blame game design for this. However it's just as easy to blame anti social players who would prefer to sit  in vent or teamspeak and not socialize with the people that are actually around them.
