Both people are wrong in this thread.

Darkfall did not grow, population wise. It only shrunk hugely since release. And splitting the population into 2 servers mades things alot worse.  

Darkfall was at least somewhat sucessful. Success is not as simple as = copies sold. If you develop and SELF PUBLISH an mmo with only 10 people, even if it did take a decade, you are going to make a big profit margin. 

Besides, if darkfall was not succesful it wouldn't have run for 3 years, nor expanded staff 5 fold, nor would there be a sequel.

There HAVE been periods of Darkfall population growth. It was growing steadily after the second expansion until the massive radio silence that occured within the last year.

I agree with this completely.

Darkfall, for the resources they used in creating it, was AMAZING. While it failed to capture my attention for a long time solely due to the large time investment required to get/keep your character competative, I don't regret buying the game by any stretch. Played for a good two months... which is more than I played either SWTOR or Rift.

You bet your ass I'll be giving Unholy Wars a good, long look especially since they're doing the rather extraordinary gesture of giving it to players who bought Darkfall 1 for free... minus a sub cost. That's really classy of them and definately has earned them some good will.

First, Darkfall DID grow. It's one of the few MMOs to open a new server POST release. The dev team went from 20 members to, currently sitting at about 55-60. They've moved into a new office building. 

Darkfall took about 5 years to develop, from summer 2003 to Q1 2009 (with beta starting in September 08). 

The game was in better shape than most other MMOs of the last 8 years, I could actually play it on day 2, unlike AoC, or WAR. 

And why wouldn't you bet cash on them to deliver? Every single feature they promised for the last 3 expansions they promised turned out to be in said expansion. 

 

So explain to me, how this is all possible, if the game wasn't successful? Failed games tend to SHRINK their staff, not grow it. They certainly don't produce entire game sequels while not making money. 

About growing, I was talking about the population of the game. Sure they opened a new server, but like you said yourself, it was a NA server that wasn't there at the release. So its not like they opened a new server because they had too much people on another one.

About the developpement time, from the wiki, it says that it began in 2001 with a 5 man team. So I'm not sure where you get the 2003 from.

Sure the game was playable on day 2 unlike most MMO, but did the game had the same player base as other hyped AAA MMO at release? I really doubt it.

I wouldn't bet cash on them to deliver because IMO they failed to deliver on the original game and now they want to release a new version of their old game in a really really short time, they don't release much infos about it, no gameplay videos etc, I'm supposed to take everything they promise for granted without any proofs? No srry I'm not that dumb anymore. I've been fooled by MMO too many times.

Sure they were successful from being able to develop and self publish an MMO with only 10 people, but it doesn't go father. It's the fact that they released a sub based MMO with only 10 people that they were able to run the game for 3 years and expended their staff. When you develop a game with this amount of people, the profit margin will be HUGE, even if you don't have 100k subs. The game is viable, not successful. Also, the new game isn't what I call a sequel, because they will shutdown the original one when UW is released. And they don't change the game a lot from what I've heard, nothing worthy of calling DFUW a sequel.

Some of the changes I have seen so far seem decent.  I am very interested in playing DFUW... the first launch was very fun and I look forward to that again.

 

Not to mention, if you paid for DF before you only pay subscription o play this one so there is really not much to lose to try it, unless you are a little kid whos parents have to pay your subscription, you are extremely poor and $10-15 may mean no food on the table which i would hope you cancel your internet before you starve, or you are just a penny pincher kind of person.

Hmm, the population has done nothing but shrink since launch what exactly do you mean by growing?  And what do you mean by successfull, the fact that they have been able to keep the game running on a few thousands subs?  I mean its a remarkble feat but there is nothing successfull about it.

i've been playing darkfall from start.. and i never seens so many people online then @ launch date..

 

The problem with this game is the company itself. darkfall 1.0 was nothing wrong it..

 

- Lack of communitation of the company.

- banana monkey coding

- zero or none content updates

- lies and promises for 3 years whole years

 

Poeple here talking about hack and cheats. which are very rare. ( well maybe @ start, but they adressed that)

 

after seeing the vid of this warrior i think our combat system goes down the drain with it.. ( speculation)

 

I do respect AV for making this game.. but they have serieus issues talking to the community

To elaborate a little further, originally there was a small window (two hours, I think...maybe four total) to get ready after a siege was announced.  Then the fighting began.  It eventualy changed to (I believe) a 22 hour window.  Either way, it could be done at any time.  There were some issues early on in DF with sieges ending in stalemates at server down (the game goes down for maintenance every morning), much to the chagrin of the sieging clan. 

 

AV has changed quite a bit over the past 3+ years.
