It will continue to sell to the remaining subscribers. Some people are waiting until after christmas, or for christmas so they can get it as a gift or with a gift card. I know a few people who have it IRL and a few friends who live elsewhere who have it, but I can tell you I do know quite a few that are waiting to buy it after christmas because of inabilities to pay for it now. I feel like no matter how good the expansion would have done in sales, people would have just consistantly berated it for not selling to all of the subscribers.

And there are people who think, "Oh my God. A new game. I must get it at release." Does that mean you don't exist? Are you a figment of their imagination? |

Not everyone, just most of the people. It's established game with its playerbase, unlike new games that after the initial rush random people randomly try. If I'd play WoW ofcourse I would buy MoP asap, why wouldnt I? There's no point for me to try it later since I already know what it is. Just saying, there's definately a difference between new games and expansions of old games when it comes to how they sell, regardless if you take it seriously or not. |

Cataclysm sold 3 million the first day and then proceeded to sell 5 million within the first month. Players who post on forums are a bit more involved than the average gamer, so you'll find that a lot of people here buy things that they want to buy instantly. Mists of Pandaria is not doing as well as Cataclysm, just as Cataclysm did not do as well as WotLK and BC, but it's to be expected. The game is 8 years running now, and while they try to make changes to keep things fresh, it's still something you've played for a long, long time. Combined with the fact that a lot of major titles have released within the year, some recently, and Guild Wars 2 having released a month before, people are hesitant to return to a game they've played for a long time that charges a subscription fee. Aion has been free with few restrictions for a while, Guild Wars 2 is free, and SWTOR is going free. But, still, 2.7 million in the first week is impressive after 8 years. Regardless of whether or not you think the game is "successful," it's no small feat to be so popular for so long. |

Oh, I thought WotLK sold the most overall. My mistake. THAT'S WHAT FORUMS KEEP TELLING ME. Was it subscriptions? That might have been it. |

10 million players
but sold only 2.7 million copies of MOP

Originally posted by zimboy69 Feel free to compare how much BC, WOTLK and Cata sold comapred to total population. Yes the numbers are more less same in ratio of boxes sold ; total population. All the previous expansions didn't sell 10 or 11 million boxes either. |

If you'd like to learn something, rather than just guessing (and getting it wrong), you could start with the fact that players in China don't have to buy boxes, they just pay by the hour for access with no up-front fee. |

Basically, MoP sales numbers don't mean squat when they're higher than it's competition, but mean everything when they're lower than previous expansions.

Is it like this everytime a new WoW expansion releases? This uninformed bile about how 2,7 is less than 10, WoW surely must be tanking? I don't know, because I haven't really followed these forums during previous releases. |

2.7 million sales would still mean theres at least that many people playing...so that still makes it more successful than any other MMORPG on the market lol.

Is it not possible for people to see that WoW is bleeding at the same time as selling more copies than any other game? Those two ideas are not mutually exclusive.
Blizzard sold 4.7+ million Cata. Blizzard sold 2.7 million MoP. That is a 2 million copy difference. It is an absolutely massive drop. Almost as massive as how many copies of the expansion they sold.
WoW is bleeding pretty badly, but is still the most popular subscription MMORPG on the market. SWTOR is the greatest mmo ever! |

IMHO you cannot judge WOW's ''health'' by MOP sales alone. I bet there are some people like me, who stopped player for over a year (almost two for me), who came back just to try the new expansion out. Not expecting a whole lot, but still there's a desire to try it out since I've played through TBC and WOTLK and have good memories of it. But guess wait, after leveling to 90, it is the same old World of Dailycraft. I am seriously consdering whether to extend my subcription. So far the answer is tilting towards NO. IMHO you should look at the subscription numbers a few months after launch, not box /digital expansion upgrade sales. |

Minus 3 more players out of WOW. I talked my friend into checking out GW2 he bought it today. And I bought a copy for my sister back on Monday who has only attempted to try WAR for a week when it first came out and ended up going right back to WOW. Well she picked up a copy for her husband last night and is planning to cancel her wow account.
