Why?

Okay so lets take a poll of people who own more than 5 guns on who should be President in 2012...

Okay lets take a poll of xfire users on which game they are playing right now...

Same issue.  The results are not significant because many demographics don't use xfire.... xfire is just for trolling eachother.

Actually I would say your's is the worst argument so far.

Gun owners are a specific demographic in the U.S. but...

Gamers are also already a demographic and X-Fire takes a sample size of that demographic. That allows you to compare game to game.

Xfire already splits it out by individual game and tracks usage. You now have another demographic specific to the game in question. When that group plays less or stops playing it is an easy correlation to the rest of those who play the same game but do not use XFire.

You would not, for example, find a time when a game doubled it's playerbase and time played by those players, but the Xfire numbers for that game were cut in half.

The biggest problem is one that is common on the internet. It is the "So what if the XFire numbers went down, me and my friends are still playing therefore it cannot be correct". It is the same argument used to try and say any data, no matter how factual, can not be correct because the user is personally doing something different than that data. You show actual movie ticket sales numbers have been constantly declining and someone will say that all though that is direct factual data it can't be correct because they saw every Twilight movie and are therefore going to the movies more often than before.

I would disagree.Whilst gamers being a demographic I do not agree that xfire is a fair cross section of that demographic. Most xfire users coem from a specific time in gaming when it was fairly popular,a time that is long gone and are the only ones who still bother to use it,apart from peopel who that group also forces to use it to paly with them.

Also you never se xfire nubmers quoted unless they agree with the posters opinion of a game so it's not even a fair representation of the data of an already unfari representation of the gaming demographic IMO.

Np, I don't. But WoW is still played more than GW2 :P

God I love saying that :D

Mission in life: Vanquish all MMORPG.com trolls - especially TESO, WOW and GW2 trolls.

It's only worse if you have no understanding of stats (look at my first comment).  Xfire trends aren't scientific nor mean anything other than one demographic is playing more or less.

Sorry to inform you, but a very small segment of the playerbase uses xfire and that segment is usually not the brightest (that or just ignorant).

I liked the idea behind it, I liked the program, but since noone of my MMO contacts used it I just uninstalled it.

Everyone uses MSN/Mumble/Irc or other programs above Xfire it seems.

So why some people like to use it to make a statement if a game is good or bad, only God knows....or they might be Xfire programmers trying to promote it, that might answer the question.

Your opinion of course.

Apple makes a good phone. There is no doubt, but I would never ever trade my Android for an Apple phone.

I sell phones for a living. There are Android phones that suck but that is more based on the company that built the phone instead of the company that built the OS.

LG should not make phones in my opinion.
Acer should not make phones in my opinion.
Sony has improved their product a great deal with the release of the ION.
HTC is very hit or miss. One phone is great and the next is crap.
Motorola has hit stride now that Google owns them. The Razr line is solid outside of some button issues that have plagued the devices.
Samsung is leading the way in my opinion as far as advancing the technology. The S III does all that the IPhone 5 does and more and was released well before the Apple counter part.

Opinions vary. These are my own.

No.  And your poll pointless.   The game sample size of XFire is so large that the chances of it not tracking game user population trends properly is so laughably small you have no argument.

There are issues with using XFire.   Sample size is not particularly one of them.  Demographics within the sample is also not one of them.  What is relevent is that HOURS are not ACTIVE players.    And active players, within the population, change their behaviors as they habituate to the MMO.   Eventually, in some months, XFire will be good at giving us some trends because, by then, we'll be through the worst of the habituation issues.

Keep in mind scientific polls are being made with as low as 500-1000 people to represent opinions of millions of people. Even if only 1% use xfire in statistics it is more than enough.

Scientific polls makes use of a large pool of different groups. Xfire is a group on its own and as such unrepresentive of everything except it's own populace.

No, it's made of computer gamers.   Who are the ones likely to be playing MMOs.   It's not made of little old ladies playing bridge.   Or little old men playing golf.

Therefore, it is highly represesntative of the target market.   You can see what I mean right here:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VDW0ZnZxjn4

Demographics are a big issue.... otherwise WoW would be leading by much more than they show on xfire.. ie (simple example) if WoW has 2x player hours as GW2; shouldn't be a lot more? I mean a lot.... like drop in the bucket in comparison.

If Wow and GW2 are even close to eachother on xfire that pretty much discounts xfire as anything statistically significant since the demographic that uses WoW is obviously very different in either game.

This is keeping in mind that it's MoP launch day and GW2 is a month in.  MoP should be beating GW2 by A LOT in player activity... and I mean a lot as in 10x+.

 Computer gamers who use xfire...

You're oversimplifying to make a point.  It would be great if we knew the actual demographic of players who use xfire....because no one I know ever as and every time I see a poll on who uses xfire its usually really low.

It could be very well possible that xfire tinkers with the numbers to make themselves look more significant than they are.

Well "according to xfire" GW2 has just temporarely hit a "low" of 5% less xfire player than an "OMG 9 Million paying subscriber!!!!! " and "BIGGEST GAME EVUR" massmarket edMMO, during its busy time at the overhyped and heavily advertised launch of their expansion, with fanbois expecting recordbreaking sales in in tripple of four million height. After dominating it for weeks and in a few days likely continuing the trend.

"According to xfire" the "BIGGEST MOST UNTOUCHABLE MMORPG EVUR!!!!! WITH SO MUCH GAP! ITS GOING TO KILL GW2 ON 26th!!!!!" couldnt even beat GW2's recent early start records and failed to put even a dent on GW2 as of now.

They must really breaking their heads what the are doing wrong!

Why are the WoW kids even braging with "statistics" only indicating their favourite overhyped junk MMO is going downhill like a rock? And trying to "slam" GW2 player with statistics indicating GW2 is doing pretty good, in fact it would be the top MMORPG of the last 4 weeks.

Never really saw the point? Bragging to people about how much time you've played a game? Keeping track of your own play time?

Never understood.

Always worth a laugh when people quote xfire numbers as some kind of gospel on how well a game is doing.

Are xfire numbers significant?

Small sample size + diverse unrepresentative sample + voluntary/at-will participation = no one cares.

Can you tell me one time it's been wrong in predicting a downward trend? One example please? Just one.

World of Warcraft.

That game has been 'dying' for... 5-6 years based on xfire numbers... LOL I can't even type that without laughing.

Saying that WoW is "in decline" and in a "downward trend" even after losing 2-3 million accounts is a LAUGHABLE assertation to make.

That's like saying "Apple only sold 5 million iPhone 5's in the first 3 days- Apple must be in decline and in a downward trend after the death of Steve Jobs" (which btw is something I actually read on a tech/news site this week.)

*paraphrased of course - they were saying "Is Apple just another tech company now?" like seriously? I HATE Apple products but I'm not an idiot - they are still *the* major player in the consumer tech market.

Maybe to you, but 25% of any business lost is a big deal to most, especially in just 1 year.

edit - You know you contradicted yourself pretty badly in the 3rd paragrah in orange?

No, that would be more like saying apple LOST 5 million iphone users not  "only sold. 5 million."

Mr. Spock the 1st qt of 2011 was the 1st qt that blizzard ever reported a quarterly loss for WoW. This was predicted by several forum posters, most notable a poster on mmo-champion who's arugument in the months leading up to that report showed that something very different was happining. Ofcourse he was meet with "Your a troll!" and "Nobody uses Xfire." He was correct though.

Since then Xfire as accuratly predicted the downward trend of RIFT, Swtor, and TSW. Why do you think GW2 will be any different with respect to what the data trends show?

With that being said, I will say again. That with this one point of data (one day) since MoP release that the graph is inconclusive. GW2 has been losing 3-6k hours played per week since launch all on it's own. Todays graph show an 8k hour drop since last week. If that number dips to 16k or something like that for the week, at that point I think it would be fair to say MoP had an impact.

I won't get into an apple vs non-apple war, but you know what people say about opinions...

Most just don't like how closed and restrictive the apple products are. Fact confirmed by the market share numbers... :)

MSN would keep updating, changing names, adding more things not needed, integrated to Live, "wouldn't update". Just became a lot of problems over the years.

I needed a chat box for friends, so I use it.

I probably would have done to skype but there was no way to turn down mic sensitivity and for the life of me could never understand how it wasn't addressed in Skype. Why the hell do I want to have all that background noice coming through the mic interferring with the converstaion?

Xfire is simple, clean and hasn't been an update/reinstall issue at all.

I also do feel the usage of Xfire is random enough and wide enough that it can pull meaningful trends. Numbers just have a way to work out like that. But I don't use it for that for an reason, just chat.

Sorry - you don't know how many players ANY game is losing or gain with X-fire. May as well just make up numbers as they will be just as accurate.

Nope, I don't use Xfire or any program like it. I simply don't see a point in using them.

Nope never did and I don't see the point of ever doing it.

Several games and some mmos asked me to install, one even demanded it once so I had to install it but at the end I deinstalled it again
