I kinda see that with gw2, but not wow, wow basicly took the grind to win system of their own game diablo and made it into a mmo format. (you could say they took this from EQ, but EQ got the idea from diablo in the first place.

For a start if they had taken the best bits from existing mmos.
Wow pvp would be like daoc.
Wow crafting would be like uo.
Wow grouping would be like coh.

They did steal the UI from ac though.

Interestingly gw2 does borrow from daoc and coh.

ive always believed wow was a mmo version of diablo - but w warcraft lore

Actually that's what I think GW2 feels like, with its zerging combat.   Which to be honest isn't surprsing given the founders of ANet developed Diablo.

Warcraft appeared kind of by mistake, after Games Workshop ditched Blizzard's version of a Warhammer RTS.   As it was well into development Warcraft was created.  Hence why there's a lot of a Warhammer feel to Warcraft.

I did play vanilla wow, it was quite fun pve wise (but sucked compared to daoc which I was still playing at pvp) until about 9 months before bc, when they got in all those EQ guys and made it more raidy

Probably the most important factor into WOW's gigantic sucess was plain old luck.

But then again, i remember that Diablo 3 sold more than 10 million. Starting to think that Blizz simply pits a spell on their games to be a hit.

And honestly, i think it makes even more sense than "secrets" or "luck"

Next step forward on the path GW2 has chosen would be an old fashioned FPS PvP game in fantasy setting with no levels, skills, gear, etc..

I'm sure lots of former CS crowd are happy for every 'improvement' in an MMORPG genre in terms of  reducing grind, importance of gear and meaning of social activities between the players, and that's fine, but that's not what MMORPGs are about. The 'Blizzards model' GW2 executes pretty decently is an evolution from FPS genre, not MMORPG.

What the companies should do is take few steps backwards and then choose the other path, the one that leads to evolution for MMORPGs. You know, those games that encourages players to talk to each others, work together as a team, and adventure in a huge seamless world for months if not years.

This makes me sad. I feel like I could have had a great warhammer 40k mmo. Lol.

The Blizzard model for WOW was to take the good things in previous MMOs and discard the rest.

But Blizzard didn't do that... they took the most poorly designed aspects of EverQuest, god rid of the pieces that held it together, and then soldiered on with a huge marketing budget.

Warcraft 1 took lore from Warhammer IP, but beyond that, its not a copy of Warhammer. Most of the lore in Warcraft come from LoTR not Warhammer.

Warhammer had the Orc vs Human lore design of original Warcraft 1, which got deeper in WC2 lore and beyond.

You're right, it is only marketing that makes WoW work.  I mean, EQ was NEVER EVER EVER has popular as WoW, but that's just marketing, right?

*sigh*

Believe it or not, most people don't want to camp spawn points for hours on end.  Games that require that you devote a ton of time to them are just never going to be that popular in the grand scheme of things.

They took what a lot of people liked about EQ and other MMOs and made sure that what they took was what more people would enjoy playing and doing.  That's why WoW was a hit.

Why has WoW stayed a hit?  Because it lacks real competition.  All other themeparks made shortly before or after WoW have generally been poor at best and so only appealed to a relatively small number of people.  They might have even had some good ideas, but the implementation was always lacking.  So WoW has been king and honestly hasn't had to change all that much since its inception for this reason.

5) Remove the gear grind.  Considering how few people are hardcore raiders in any given MMO, this was a no brainer.

I always find it interesting when people say this. The gear grind is there in GW2. Even more than it ever was in WoW or previous MMORPGs. Do you understand the amount of time it takes to get full exotic lvl 80 gear and legendary weapon? And how much content you will be repeating ad nauseum in the process?

Well some people will undoubtedly say, "You don't have to grind that though!"

Fact of the matter is, Exotic gear is better than Rare gear. If you think you are going to beat Arah Explorable with your lvl 70 rare gear, good luck!

You didn't have to grind raid / dungeon gear in WoW or previous MMORPGs either. It's always been an option, GW2 doesn't do anything new in this respect.

Please inform yourself properly in the future before you type such things or at least play the game and experience things yourself cause what you are writing here can't be more wrong.

Main differences:

- in wow you need 700+ hours for a full set depending on how lucky you are (dice roll)

- in wow you NEED the gear or you won't be able to keep up with others in competition

- in wow you have to repeat the same raid over and over with one path only

- in gw2 a full exotic set takes you 44 dungeon runs

- in gw2 only 2 parts of the whole set have higher stats and they don't make such a huge impact or is a insurance that you will live longer than others cause your skills and gameplay play a huge role in overall so even if you have the exotic set while I have a regular one, I could still survive longer than you only because I'm using stats removal and shielding, healing while you are going full force on damage

- in gw2 a level 80 dungeon has 6 different paths so its not as monotone as a wow raid.

By that it means that you have to run like 7 times 4 of the paths and 8 times 2 of the other paths

You also don't have to run dungeons alone to get your set either:

  • Common = Mob Drops, Chest Rewards, Merchants
  • Fine = Mob Drops, Chest Rewards, Karma Merchants, Crafting, Mystic Forge
  • Masterwork = Mob Drops, Chest Rewards, Karma Merchants, Crafting, Mystic Forge
  • Rare = Mob Drops, Chest Rewards, Karma Merchants, Cultural Vendor Merchants, Crafting, Mystic Forge, Dungeon Token Rewards
  • Exotic = Mystic Forge, Dungeon Token Rewards, WvW Merchants, Crafting
  • Legendary = Mystic Forge

As about the OP, ANet didn't took "Blizzards model", they had their own one that previewed in april 2004 already and after the betas released in 2005.

GW1 already had its own mechanisms and innovative as also partially revolutionary things in it that many people loved.

Most of these things also got carried over to GW2 while other features were borrowed and perfectionated through other games like CoH, DaoC and so on.
