Its been only a night or 2 of PvP, but is there any other option besides throwing down as many wells/marks as possible, hoping people actually stand in the right place to take the damage? Since we have no real single target damage that can kill anyone, what else is there? Or am I missing something?

Your missing a lot imo. Axe and dagger both do good burst dmg, not as much as some of the other classes, but they shouldn't. Necro has incredible survivablity and awesome utility, with mass res, AoE heals, boons along with those conditions.
I play the class to choke people out slowly. I like watching as my foe realizes he can't win, then looks for an exit with 20+ stacks of vulnerbilty on. It makes me smile :) That being said the Lich Form elite has awesome burst. DamonVile- Games built for disposable players are now apparently built by disposable employees. |

The necro isn't really designed for directly applied single target burst - it's supposed to be more underhanded by the looks of it. A case in point - playing vs. catastrophic bursters (warriors & thieves). Death Shroud with 3 second Retaliation traited is your friend here - nothing like watching a burster heavily wound themselves merely to drop you out of it still at 100% health.... Ground denial is also great - Well of Darkness is fantastic in this regard - even a blistering attack will loose a lot of it's effectiveness as miss follows miss. Freely targetted Wells are irreplaceable in PvP imo - get them with 20% reduced cooldown too. Pulling targets into stacked Wells is also effective followed by a fast cripple. Marks take skill to use - because the very best way to use them is dropping directly under the feet of your target - but these are rapid fire and long distance with no red warning circle - start with them and then switch weapon immediately - staff claw is only to be used when absolutely necessary. Sceptres are great - especially mixed in with other sources of bleed in a bleed specc - engage people who are already focussed on another target and many don't realise what the hell is going on until they are hemoraging 1500+ health a tick from your bleed stack. Of the Elites in PvP I favour Plague - combine this with heavy bleed build and/or traited for blind also causing confusion. Mobile aoe blind/confusionis a 20 second fight lock-down with the added bonus that you can use spectral armour in this form so the damage you take is negligible. It's slow though so use either teleport ability (worm or DS claw) to close if your target is cautious. Necros are tricky and complex killers - not bursters. They have the innevitability of a slow death if played well, but you will never kill quick. But.... they do need a better main staff attack (maybe if it was just faster to close with the target....) and better power/crit effectiveness and of course, completely overhauled pets. I don't play these styles - but I can see the choice should be there for those who want to. |

Hmmm - I am now leaning towards Necros needing faster damage in PvP - playing a Mesmer atm and got a friend who has a Necro, Warrior and Thief and we are both seeing the problems increasingly with the Necro class because of the stark comparisons with these classes. Being able to paper-cut someone down and survive the slower kill method is all well and good but it's still an inherent disadvantage in PvP where 'kill and get away fast' is so damn useful. Necro survivability is OK'ish - but skilled bursters get you down in 3 or so seconds sometimes - before a reaction is possible due to cc. I'll admit it doesn't happen much but when it does it shows that there are fast methods for bursting which exceed the survivabililty toolset of Necros far too much. I have been killed in under 5 seconds whilst Spectral Armour is up before and whilst cc'd. One doesn't always have a decent amount of life force available or the cooldown ready on demand for Death Shroud. ....not ideal for a fun PvP experience.... I prefer an enjoyable fight where me or my opponent earns it. At the moment I don't really earn my keels as a Mesmer - it's far too easy, and my friend doesn't feel he does with his other classes. Killing as a Necro seems to the both of us to be far more satisfying - you can almost savour it. The issue comes down to either greater survivability due to current very low burst, or more burst instead of survivability. I have to say I favour the second option unless there is a nerf of the ideal burster classes, and I am not sure a nerf is always the best way to go. |
