I'm starting to think that the prepurchaser accounts have been hacked.  The reason being is that there seems to be some folks getting the confirmation link for the email changes while others just get the email stating that it was changed.  Either that, or GW2 realized that it fumbled on security and quietly put the confirmation link in.  At any rate, everything about the way ANet handled things seemed strange to me.  Like not even having a setup installation file like every other game out there.  It just seemed strange to me that everything was contained in one huge .dat file.  You don't see that in a professional, AAA game.  I'm not sure if release was like that or not, but I still have a folder with a huge 16+ GB .dat file and a few little files.  I don't know, it all just seems like amateur hour to me.  One things for certain, though, they completely bungled on security.  It's like they had a bunch of artists and world designers on their team, but nobody with a great deal of security experience.

Any other prepurchasers out there get their account hacked?  I'm curious....

You should calm down first.  It's a game.

Second, you won't be able to remember the password if you are in panic mode.

Common sense isn't

Really unless you have an authentication system similar to blizzards hacking issues are going to occur. There are reports of people being hacked with authenticators but these are the much older dial in authenticators which are not the same standard as the app/device. I would love to see an ANet app authenticator. Though it seems they are stuggling hard enough just to keep most features of their game working while making rash and unreasonable decisions on every issue that comes across their table to look at anything else.

Okay, Ive sent the support a ticket, it has my serial code for the game and my email. I can't send them the billing because I purchased the game with cash. Did I do the right thing, considering the circumstances behind the customer service right now?

But it doesn't blow apart the possibility of trojans, keyloggers, SQL injections and other fun stuff like that.

I've been on the internet for a long time, since the mid 90's, and if there is one thing I learned is that you should never trust the security of your account to a corporation, no matter how trustworthy they seem.

The first and the best line of defense is you and if you don't take it seriously, then part of the blame is on you.

I'll give you an example. I started getting those "reset password emails" a few days ago because I used the same email address as I did for Battle.net and SOE games. Knowing what this leads to, I created a new email account specifically for GW2. I have not revceived one password reset email since.

I urge everyone to do the same. There is a lot of money in RMT and hackers are not going to stop no matter what ArenaNet does because it's just too lucrative. Look at WoW, even with all of the lawsuits Blizzard has won against gold traders, WoW players still get gold spam and accounts still get hacked. The hackers aren't going to stop because this is their livelihood.

I know that some of you are here posting for different reasons but anyone who is serious about this, do what I did. It works.

Just to clarify, and I appologize for the caps:

CREATE A BRAND NEW EMAIL ACCOUNT AND TRANSFER YOU EXISTING GW2 ACCOUNT THERE. No more password reset emails. Don't wait until ArenaNet does something, take matters into your own hands. It takes like 5 minutes to create a free email account with Yahoo or Gmail.

Im not saying that anything you said is stupid, I have as long experience with this as you have, and I have friends who get keylogged and mmo accounts banned regularily. BUT, I didnt use a new email for GW2, and I started getting those password reset request emails. However, they stopped after a day or so after I started getting them, and it stopped because they disabled the feature. I read this on Facebook I believe, or it could have been reddit. I have tried to find the announcement to include it here, but I was unable to find it (didnt bother to spend too much time on it tbh, if you think im lying, go ahead). So even if changing your email helped in any way, you wouldnt be able to tell just because you stopped getting password reset request emails. Just letting you know :)

D'oh... ANet means so well with their game, but the out-of-game issues are certainly rising.  How frustrating for all concerned.

- I have prepurchased

- Linked with gw1 account

- Use a new dedicated email adress for gw2.

- Haven't received any vague e-mails or password reset e-mails.

I get the impression that people are receiving phishing emails. Those ppl need to look closely at what other websites they use the same email adress. It is not that hard, unless you are really sloppy with account information.

Seriously? Arenanet amateur if it comes to online games? Do you know the uptime since launch of those servers? And how fast they are rolling out patches and you only have to restart the client and can log in again? Does that sound amateur to you if you compare that to other MMO's right after launch?

The big .dat file was the same with GW1. But I guess that game was amateur too.

Wait, could someone explain this to me as a 5 year old?

First I use the same email for GW2 and CS since before the game came out and no problems at all so far, second, even if they hack your account they would need to hack your email account in order to authorize the log in, right?, I just tried to change my gw2 email and I couldn't, so whats going on?

Edit: Also its so god damn hard to get some kind of Mobile Authenticator just like Swtor and WoW?, cause that pretty much would solve it.

They better do something about it because a bunch of people are freaking out now and most of us don't like to have to look over our shoulder and be concerned about such things.

Well, as of Friday (Aug 31st), the hacker could change the email address that your account was attached to EVEN IF they didn't have access to your actual email account.  This is because some bonehead at ArenaNet or NCSoft decided that the email confirmation change should be sent  to the NEW email address being changed to rather than the OLD.  That's why on my end, I only got the email staing that it was already changed without any sort of confirmation.  I'm pretty sure they've realized that idiotic mistake by now, however.

Nobody got hacked.

The game may be in bad shape, but there is no need to pile on with these types of accusations.

NM, apparently you can't change the email if you didn't link with a GW1 account.

You know, friend of mine today got a password reset email for GW2. He doesn't own/play GW2 at all, but he has GW1. He changed the email address and PW associated with the account to a freshly created gmail account. Within an hour of creating the gmail account and changing the email in the account manager he started getting PW reset emails at the new address. And its not due to a keylogger or trojan as he had just completed a full reinstall of windows on his PC after installing his new HDD yesterday.

Hes not worried though as he doesn't play GW1 anymore and isn't really interested in GW2 at the moment.

Same I have two Guild Wars 1 accounts.  1 with just Prophicies and the other the is The Complete Collection.

I DO NOT HAVE A MASTER ACCOUNT for either.   I tryed to set one up awhile back when I got The Complete Collection. Long story short their account system did nothing but grief me.  It's so stupid the amount of trouble I have had with that system. I hate to even admit it. Was never able to log into it.

Anyways.  I got password reset attempts on one of the GW 1 accounts.  I don't own Guild Wars 2. I do plan to buy it.   I haven't logged  into GW1 but 1 time in about 6 months.  That was  to see if my accounts were still ok after sitting for a long time. They make good games but piss on  their account system.  I checked yesterday and both accounts are fine.

There were many posts in that link, I read some but not all. Arenanet was indeed searching for any people who had a new email account setuped exclusively for Guild Wars 2 and still received the password reset email. However, did any of the replies actuallly claim that they were such persons?

I am asking because otherwise it just means that Arenanet wanted to rule out that possible scenario.

Or, they could have received "Hacked account" tickets from folks who created new email accounts and wanted to see how widespread that issue was.  Either way, I still think it's something on their end considering how massive this problem has become.

I'm not buying this BS their putting out there about the fault being with OTHER compromised sites.  It just seems to me that they're trying to pass the blame since their massive ego has been built up by all the fanboys thinking they're the best thing since sliced bread and that they can do no wrong.

And I'm not buying into the whiners and finger-pointers.   Gamers lie.   Gamers lie all the time.    They cheat, they fail, they buy gold, they use mods and macros.    Then something bad happens and it's always the game company's fault.

So, I say without solid proof instead of some BS artist on the Internet -- bull.    And it's not a fanboy thing.   It happened in LOTRO, Mabinogi, WoW, Eve Online and every other major MMO I've ever played.   Every single person I've known, or know of, who has been hacked was hacked because they were either stupid with their account information or they were hacked because they were stupid with their gaming decisions (RMT/MODS).   And, sadly, not one single one of these lying crybabies ever tells the truth about what they've done.

It reminds me of the "I was banned for no reason" only to find out when they posted their account info and ANet looked it up, they were a bunch of homophobic, and racist jerkoffs...

The big .dat file was the same with GW1. But I guess that game was amateur too.

The game has virtually no downtime almost like GW1, they do a great job in this regard, they might not even have a weekly 3+ hour maintenance (can't tell, game hasn't been out for a week yet but it's based on the same engine as GW1, so if the server is anything like that it's going to be great). On major patches we'll see if the servers will go down for 6+ hours.

That big .dat file seems to be mostly for protecting their work. It took years before people found out how to manipulate those on Guild Wars 1 to extract or replace individual files out of it.

Sounds to me like you've got to get out more if you're surrounded by a bunch of morons who get their accounts hacked into all the time because of their own stupidity.  This is different.  Trust me.  Sooner or later, ArenaNet is going to fess up to the fact that there was a breach in their servers.  This is on top of the fact that they made some pretty bonehead decisions on how they handle email changes and basic security 101 type stuff (like who allows infinite retries for passwords these days?  I thought that type of stupidity in security was stamped out long ago... I guess not.).

I hope they go ahead and develop an Authenticator app for smartphones as quickly as possible. That'll help calm a lot of nerves, even though I'm not particularly worried.

No shit right?  If I were compromised they would of actually got onto the account to begin with.

How the hell did they find out that the email had a gw 1 account that had been doing nothing but pretty much sitting for a long time in the first place?  It's not linked to a master.

A few posts up for a bit more details.  With all the chatter going on I finally decided to see if my GW1 accounts were intact.  Sure enough reset requests on one of them. Both accounts are fine though.

It is funny I liked this game a lot, but they're doing a horrible job at handling the game so far, first they're using reddit to comunicate with customers, when in reality they should've their forums up by now.

Second, what's with the happy trigger on bans, sure they are all justified, however, maybe there are other ways of solving the problem, the other day a guy  (I believe him because I've heard of other people with proof getting banned for some other stupid reasons too) was saying on map chat that his girlfriend got a 72 hour ban for naming her character "Fartface Mcgee", I know stupid name, but even if it is agains't the ToS they could've simply make her change the name and avoid any further issue, makes me afraid of saying anything offensive in the map chat, way too tough.

And third, bunch of people getting hacked, even if it is a small minority getting hacked by their or Anet fault, it doesn't matter because I don't feel my account is secure anymore, also I maybe wrong but I heard that if you got hacked they perm ban your account and you are screwed, again with the happy trigger ban,

Truth or not,They're getting bad PR and it may not affect you but it does to some of us, I was thinking on purchasing some gems to get more character slots and bank slots, but I think I will keep my money for the moment and wait until things settle down.

TL;DR I like the game, I don't like how Anet is handling things.

Edit: I am speaking in general not towards you Satarious hehehe.

Tbh, I think a lot of it comes down to each individual person's computer and password security. I'm currently using an email address that I use for many other things and not once have I gotten hacked. I have recieved password reset emails and I ignore them. I also have a VERY secure password and do not go to sites that will compromise that security. Here's a small tip for people when they set passwords. Have all of the following in your passwords: Uppercase letters, lowercase letters, numbers, and special characters. Oh and make it 10 characters or more. With all these they'd need some VERY strong computers to crack passwords and I feel like gold farmers are very unlikely to possess such machines (If they did, they would give a crap about game accounts). If for some reason they still get it, its probably a keylogger and you have far bigger issues that someone hacking your game account that need to be attended to and if not that you probably went through a phising website which you should probably have checked to make sure it was safe. I know I sound like I'm supporting Anet but I'm not. I'm just telling people to be smart about it. People who post on the net saying, "Oh I never install anything fishy or visited any harmful websites" are just lying to both the forums and themselves and want someone to blame it on. Their servers are definitely not compromised so enough with the conspiracy theory stuff.

Keep your head burried in sand like an Ostrich and pretend everything is allright. God you are obnoxious. Do you get paid by Anet to defend them and put them in positive light on every given oppertunity? Just yesterday Tadcore brought up this point that it is too quick to put all the blame on the players.

Even i and several others suggested that there could be a loop hole on Anet's side while you, heartless, itgrowls and other usual suspects were flaming people and putting all blame on the players. Forgot what happened with Rift? it turned out later on that fault was on Rift side and all fanboys then had egg on their face.

Don't be so quick in calling players idiots.

"Everyone knows that companies do not make mistakes and everything they do is always perfect, people are just crazy, them hippies complaining about everything" This is probably what is on your mind right now, just because theres a big chance the fault is at the players end doesn't means is not possible that the fault is on Anet end, but you seem pretty convinced that is the peoples fault because you probably know something that the rest of us don't.
