You arent just a tank because you have a shield. You want to be a tank, build like one, toughness, vitality, stats and traits. Do you have them?

Where do I reset my traits? (not the skills you buy ofc, but the points you can set. I'm not quite sure of the right name)

my guardian is 12, maxed out all my weap skills, have all weaps at curent level and gear. best scenarios so far for damage, survivability, buff/healing others have been scepter+torch or scepter+focus and staff. Have tried combos with hammer, mace shield, sword shiled, greatsword sword with anything else mace with anything else. but found the dps of the sceptr superior, and the utility of the torch or focus to be better as well. It's early but these are my findings so far, and even had a few elementalists/necros ask me how i was doing that? and what class are you? lol
GW2, definitely not the same old mmo. |

in gurd u should NOT get hit in the first place, read ur skills good, learn when your Guard can block hits, use these skills in the right time.
using 2 weps set helps alot, a shields can save you lots of hits if you use the skills right, good luck. |

If you wants yo avoid loosing 30% of his health in each hit, the relevant skill to improve is Thoughness. More health will help against burst and conditions , but as a guardian removing conditions is one thing you are often very good at. That means that thoughness does work really well for a guardian,(if you also manage to remove conditions, because thoughness doesn't work against conditions) Second thing, to build a strong tanky class while you learn to play can really improve your play alot. Because you get alot more experience in wich tricks to do when. Then you can later go back to be a glasscanon super damage dealer properly with alot more succes. A guardian is maybe the hardest class to kill in this game, if specced for survival. But the really difficult thing is that every step you take in the direction of being dealing more damage, you have to master some of his skills and tricks to improve surviveability even better. Its not a very forgiving class to start out with as a glass canon. Guardian is one of the classes with the highest skillbar in the game. Be sure you have the patience to master it.
read how to create a succesfull mmo before posting about GW2. And read tao of ArenaNet before talking about innovation in GW2 |

So respecting traits from power (which I currently use) to toughness and vitality should make it more viable?
I deal insane damage as it is. But health goes down quick too atm Playing ATM: Diablo III KICKSTARTED: Camelot Unchained. (250 USD) |

30% is a lot, make sure your gear is of an acceptable level and watch the mob levels. Sometimes a number of higher level mobs are mixed in and those hurt like hell.
You should also remember that no class is really supposed to stand there and take it to the face, not even melee. Some bosses in particular will absolutely rape you if you don't move the hell away constantly after using a few abilities. |

Some of my gear is level 8-10 on my character. But people say that gear is not important. (I'm 23)

haha, this is where the "skill" factor comes in to this game... You gotta dodge heavy attacks and use your cc abilities with hammer... You gotta move a lot and be mobile or else you'll loose hp fast. "Happiness is not a destination. It is a method of life." ![]() |

I take about 1/3 of my health per normal mob attack on my thief. Feels about right. Every time you actually do get hit is a time where you failed to avoid:) Dance like a butterfly!

Originally posted by Svarcanum Agreed, I play thief as well. If you take a lot of damag when you get hit, just dont. It takes some time to get used to that, particularly in melee but once you get it right things work excellent. :) |

Originally posted by MikeJezZ Try changing your traits to suit your combat style with guardian... My gf plays a guardian and has no problem so far with it... If you're using a hammer you should put your traits on 2nd line, the 1st one is more suitable for swords, and if you want to be more bulky with guardian get gear with vitality and some power (power's always good)... And gear does matter untill your max level, because it does give you better stats as you level in pve, try getting that first and you'll see how it goes. "Happiness is not a destination. Maybe I'm just not as high of level as you. But I'm 47 and not having any issues with guardian and 2-h. Mainly useing greatsword and staff. Play around with class skills you unlock. With 2-h weapons you will do enough damage that you can focus thoes on defensive buffs. I also did my traits with hp and toughness in mind. It makes soloing easier and gives me most of the buffs I want for group support play as well.

Hehe, gear is not important if you're skilled enough to avoid all hits. Not everyone is. Get more gear if you find yourself getting hit.

Originally posted by Svarcanum I know GW2 doesn't want to be WoW, but I'm confused by a few things in this thread.
How can you dance around wearing plate? I thought the whole point of wearing heavy armor is so you don't HAVE to bunny-hop around. GW2 appears to be dispensing with the holy trinity, but what's the point of having a class that appears, for all intents and purposes, to be a tank (heavy armor / shield) but isn't? I'm also curious as to how battles with a boss-type go when no one is a tank. Does the boss bounce around between characters depending on who's hitting him the hardest at the moment?
