LTS = £159.99

Sub = £11.49

Divide one by the other and guess what you get?

I think they made a massive error, they should of launched free to play.  I doubt they will get chance now to go free to play with TSW, more likely to go bankrupt.

We are short on hard facts but know a few general truths. We know EA (their co-publisher) feels the P2P model is dead... (more)

I can´t believe why people keep repeating anyhting EA states in their press releases full of BS. Don´t you get it, they needed to FIND a reason, some twist, NOT to blame the awful mediocre game TOR is, they didn´t say, sorry the game sucked, people left because it was boring, looked like 2004, lacked approximately 80% of features SWG had 10 years ago, it doesn´t feel like Star Wars, the railshooter is an insult, the engine is complete failure, let´s throw it away and do something new with Star Wars.

NO.. of course.. the sub model.. it´s dead! SWTOR is the best game ever, but the sub model killed it.

Yeah sure, if EA says so.. lol.

L... O..... L....

If TOR would have been anything like SWG, plus the features from TOR in a new 2012 looking polished package, I´d bought a sub for 5 years in advance. I´d thrown my credit card at the screen, or sent it in an envelope directly to Bioware to charge me whatever they want.

I don't care about SWTOR any more than I do about GW2 when it comes to forecasting TSW's future. Those games are those games way over there. TSW is a niche game with no excuse. When it comes to predicting TSW going F2P in the future, the thoughts of EA's Chief Operating Officer on the subscription model are certianly relavent  as they are Funcom's Co-Publisher with a stake in the game's profitability.  If you think he is lying that's fine. But to get at the truth you watch what people do and the fact is he is helping push a major MMORPG release under his direction into a F2P model for whatever reason. His thoughts will influence what Funcom does. I am not sure I like it but it is what it is. LOL.

Am i the only one who remember high EA officials saying that subsription is way to go under a year ago?

EA is saying what investors want to hear.   EA will say anything to keep their stock from falling.

If they feel like saying sub is king they will it is, if they feel like investors want to hear freemium then they will.

If they feel like dancing macarena by CEO will get their stock higher then they will.

Swtor failed badly so they blame it on sub because blaming it on business model hints that in future it will get much much better with diffrent model.  What infuence stock the most in normal situation? (without takeovers in process, etc)

Future profits.

If EA would say "Swtor faield and players think it sucks balls and Swotr won't bring profits we promised and we have long hard road ahead to make it enjoyable for players"

Their stock would fall.

If they say "Swtor failed but we will change business model and becasue of that  players will throw rain of dollars at us"

then it won't have as devastating effect and it might even have good effect on stock prices, since 'f2p' and 'freemium' are 'on the spot' right now and investors like to buy promises.

Zombie - Dead but still moving.

8/24/12 8:32:16 AM#65

Unlimited duration free trial would be my guess at the first move, probably along with a client including first month priced the same as a month's subscription.  For that I would guess within the next 3 months.

Let's see. 30 million in development cost. Let's say 300k sold at launch, more have bought since, at 50$ minimum per box. That's about 15 million on box sales alone. AoC is still profitable, AO is still profitable aswell.  Cosmetic cash shop doing better than expected and "churn" also better than expected.

I think f2p is farther off than some of you think.

Ive seen some educated estimates that put the current amount of subs between 30-50k, I wouldnt be surprised to see funcom go under

They sold 350k boxes/downloads I doubt it is down to that number already.....Even so TSW didnt come anywhere near what they thought it would and Funcom is probably looking at f2p by the end of the year.

Why? When it looks like they've already made back over half of development on boxes alone. Keep those subs rolling in.

As far as their perdictions, where as Anet ask for purchase up front w/o a release date, Fucom inflated numbers to investors. Both served the purpose of getting a cash infusion.

I still remember when I heard how many they predicted at launch. I think all of us following where like "Wow, really?"

edit - Funcom is in a very different situation than EA was with swtor.

1. The don't have to pay lucas arts 15-30% of profit

2. They didn't spend 500 million on the game. Even after box sales EA had atleast another 150-350 more the needed to recoup.

3. Swtor was a bad game. There was no choice but go f2p in order to get back as much as they could.

Funcom is not going through what EA did went through with swtor.

Fact: Most people were crying prior to swtor (somewhat loudly) for the story to be put back in rpgs.

/irony

The story is in every mmorpg today, it's important to have something like that in themeparks... No1 said the story in SWTOR was bad, it's one of the best parts of the game... But the rest of it is just poorly done.

Why? well because they don't have enough earnings to even keep their salaries. That points to the lack of revenue, thus f2p is a viable option to try and get some cash.

With a very low end guess of 6 million per month and about 160 employed. That breaks down to 28k per month for each person. Ofcourse there is over head and on going development, but FC still has two other mmos making money too.

I think they are doing better than first glance may appear.  Only 30 mill development due to already having the most powerful engine in the mmo industry works wonders for the bottem line.

I don't know what the salaries are over were FC is but 28k is not a tipical salary for a programmer or most professional jobs in the tech industry in the US.

EIther way you are taking guesses, the fact is we already know they didn't have enough money to cover the salaries.

28k dollars?? programmers in the US, here is an average: http://www.payscale.com/research/US/Job=Software_Engineer_%2F_Developer_%2F_Programmer/Salary

http://money.usnews.com/careers/best-jobs/computer-programmer/salary

http://www.indeed.com/salary/q-Programmer-Analyst-l-United-States.html

28k is a pretty low salary for any professional in the US. Again, I don't know about the salaries were FC is from.

Yeah thinking around that time. It'll be forgotten by then.

Why? well because they don't have enough earnings to even keep their salaries.

KUPPA, have some coffee or something. 28k not the salary as I stated on the post you quoted. That's 28k per month per person.

Seems you missed two important words....PER MONTH...He even tried to correct you, on what he was saying, and you ignored it in your zeal to zing him on your original comprehension.

This game and SWTOR show that it's time to stop developing single player games with coop features after finishing the single-player campaign that is usually busted in one month and let's start making real MMORPGs again.

Fact: Most people were crying prior to swtor (somewhat loudly) for the story to be put back in rpgs.

/irony

Wonder if those cries where from singleplayer RPG players or from actuall mmoRPG players.

Such a hugh difference for me because I love singleplayer RPG with a good story, but with a MMORPG it's about the freedom and the RPG part shouldn't come from story of NPC but should come from it's actual players that live and breath and make the gameworld feel alive compared singleplayer RPG where the NPC's and it's story should bring the world alive.

I just feel that there is one thing Funcom should learn and that's never to release a not so well known IP MMORPG in mids of summer time.

Anet is smarter to release this month, mainly end of summer, weather is going down somewhat, people will start to be more inside instead of in the months June/July where many people spend time mostly outside.

On Topic: Hopefully TSW will never go F2P and take the route of how CCP worked on and with EVEOnline, that is to expand and evolve the game. And I aint seeing EVE being F2P now is it?

But perhaps it's a rare feature that gamecompanies can actually be patient to create something and expand on that with their vision.
