Funcom turned out a decent game, but the reviewers mostly gave the game about 7 out of 10.

The game doesn't generate much excitement in most gamers.

The nightmare scenario emerges of a game with less than 100 K subs at launch with a AAA premium sub.

Massive layoffs of staff and the game goes free to play.

Now, MMORPG.com about that high score review a few weeks back ;-)

Leaving aside the pure speculations on the sub number and F2P (we don't have sales numbers or retention percentage) and the fact that the layoffs are because the intented target (over a million boxes sold) hasn't been met, would you care to explain why would the review be at fault? Because he liked the game and found it refreshing while the majority of wowtard didn't? Have you checked on a dictionary the definition of "niche game"?

Now uhm... isn't GW2 published by NCsoft?

Yep it is, but it's developed by Anet. BIG BIG difference there bub. You'll see why once the numbers are in at launch.

SWTOR was also developed by BioWare.

EA wholly own and manage Bioware. It's just a trading name, now the good will (in the name) is used up it will be dumped is my hunch.

This is sad news.  More proof that the P2P model is gone and there is only room left for F2P.  I just hope it's only that and not the beginning of the end of the genre.

Game certainly doesn't deserve this.  There was some real creative stuff in this one.

No,
TSW is not a P2P model, It's a hybrid. And just for this reason alone, I want to see TSW fail. I don't ever want to see another AAA title MMO come out and think they are worth charging a Boxed fee, Sub fee and then a full fledged in-game item store.

NO %#^* WAY!

If I am paying a Sub, I want equal opportunity. I don't care if it's just a pair of cosmetic sunglasses. If I'm paying 15/mo, there'd better be a way in game for me to acquire them without dropping 10 bucks more.

That actually makes sense.

The game Had a lot of costumes, glasses, etc available without spend any real money. TSW its the best game ever, a dream come true for all how likes and love Horror movies / survival horro games and deep storys.  Its a TRUELY original game, not the same elves / dragons crap.  Not for everyone of course... this game its for mature people, player database its mostly 25+ year old gamers.

I really dont care about what FUNCOM does or not as a company to inprovee their founds. I have no shares in FUNCOM... just buy then a game....

I love how people trump TSW as a mature game so it makes em feel better at night.  There is no more maturity in TSW than any DDO, GW, GW2, or what have you.  Also hate to burst you bubble but 25 years old is the typical player in an MMO... even in WoW.

Original?  They took all horror stories and urban myths and incorperated it into their game, it's as original as WoW and GW and guild wars 2 is seething originality if you wanna play that game.  So don't try to spin the game off as this truely original game which while refreshing isn't all this and that in originality since any AAA MMO has as much originality.

On a positive note, I'm sure Funcom has a lot more financial room to maneuver than EA did, since TSW development was far, far cheaper. They don't need 1 million subs to stay in the black.

There is plenty of room for P2P MMOs, problem is producing a game that's P2P worthy.  TSW doesn't fit that bill.

EVE has a unique model which you can puy game time with in-game money which P2P MMOs should really copy or take note of.  I honestly think that P2P MMOs should really look at EVE's design or adjust their model as  their retail + sub+ expansion pricing and just be a flat out sub buisness model is overpricing their game.

The problem i see with TSW is that it wasn't ready for launch it should have been delayed a week or two.

My reasons for canceling my sub after buying the game and thinking it was going to be decent are.

1. F2P + P2P Model???? not my style of game even if the main part of the game is free it lacked customization.

2. I was being asked to pay for clothing at the default screen just to change my color of pants I wear?

3. I was not offered any customization choices a P2P subscriber.

4. Customer Support did suck I had to create a new account because they couldn't apply my game code to my previous account I had during beta.

5. Lack of Customization such as face choices, and hair for that matter.

Due to these reasons the game should have been delayed. Yes the game is better than Fallen Earth given the fact that Fallen Earth is run by gamers first, has lots of griefers/trolls, and hackers. But beyond that the game takes too long to load for my computer, and it just gets old fast especially with the lack of customization on my character it just isn't my game.

Instead if it was delayed a bit longer they could have done so much more, but from what I can tell the game will be going completely FREE 2 Play before long.

I don't know about you..But It seems you didnt look around long enough..

1, The customisation at characther creation is limited, but the real customisation comes within the game, with all the diffrent clothing options in London, I rarely see anyone that looks the same. Infact it's better than ANY other game I have ever played , due to players not wearing any armor or such tied to specific levels or quests. Yes there is the "online game store" and it sells even more clothing to spice things even further, not going to argue these coudnt be in game and that it feels  bit cheap, but they are optional and has no inpact on gameplay at all.

2 There will be a barber and plastic surgent in game at the end of this month, I believe..

3 As for the starter clothing, well u use those for a few play sessions , again go to the HUGE clothing store in LONDON and deck yourself out, all clothes come with diffrent colors as well, and there really is LOTS of clothes there.

You missed his entire point of facial/character model customization as being his reason for lack of customization. His point on costumes custimization is why are they charging their P2P players a fee for more options? That is just a giant slap in the face. Yes it's a growing practice, but that doesn't mean it's an ethical practice.

I think you are missing HIS point, because the option he spoke about are either FREE (completing decks or earning in game achievements) or buyable in London for INGAME CURRENCY. The Cash Shop it's a thing apart. You get basic customization options at creation and tehn can either earn more through the game mechanisms or buy them with PAX, the in game money. Sorry to bust yer bubble...

The media makes me laugh at every game we hear this crap, this is common practice to do this, I been in the gaming field for awhile now, and at the end of every game, thats it for alot of people some stay, some go, depending if they have a contract or NOT.

ALso F2P does NOT mean thats the end, DDO, LOTR started it and its proven that companys make more money with that model, I persoanlly dislike it, but the games, I had made smaller scale are all free to play , because I make more money that way.  But as far as MMO's go welcome to how MMO's are gonna be period.

Arena Net is hiring for now, but after they won't be they will lay off as well. Thats how it does, Blizzard did the same thing and people freaked out, because of the MEDIA loves to blow things way out, look at our news in the US, thats why people are so messed up!!

I would never copy EVE's model at all, they got  in the market at the perfect time matter of fact they almost went under back then, the reason EVE does well is because  of it being different and people give it a chance.

We have many indies now, but people won't give them chances because I feel gamers today are way to picky and whine way to much over stupid things and they wany everything for free.

I listen to people all the time and they whine about 4-60 bucks for a game so how can you sit here and say P2P works now a days it did with older gamers, but youngers hell no, they whine to much and ruined it for everyone else.

I'm gonna give it a month or 2 post launch before Anet announces their layoffs. sorry, but the amount of people needed to make a game does not equal the amount of people needed to sustain a game.

Because i can.

Funcom need as much as they can earn. TSW needed to be a big hit to restore the company after its Age of Conan problems of a few years ago.

It's sad, but having a good journey is only half of what you need in order to be a successful MMORPG. Content of this type is just not enough for a P2P game.

I have no ill will toward FC, I enjoyed the journey in AOC, plus the PVP wasn't bad for a time. I hope they can flesh out TSW enough to where it becomes a lasting title.

Sad News indeed.  The industry needs more titles that utilize settings beyond midieval fantasy.  The game was not my cup of tea, but was enjoyable and different for me.

 Cheers!

I think F2P is an incorrect title. They really aren't. They are more like pay as you Go models. But regardless of how you want to call it, the game itself must be a viable game with reasons to hold players.

Recent games simply do not offer enough reason to justify an ongoing expense. Sigle player games without significant content or reasons to keep playing aren't going to be successful as F2P.

What player is going to spend money in a cash shop when there is no reason to do so?

DDO and LOTRO were decent games with a lot to offer when they went F2P. Looking at SWTOR, how is this game going to turn profitable from a Cash Shop? Everyone's already done with it.

It's the sad state of the genre. The next big title has as many threads discussing issues with it's business model than issues with the game itself.

Hybrid model would be way to go with a non-buy to win cash shop, or ramp up the bucks with a full-on  buy to win cash shop and make everything on offer free-to-play. Funcom have some options, but they don't want to lose money and need to try to get players to actually play this game before it goes under 50 thousand subs or less.

It's HOW all the myths and legends are tweaked and woven into the game universe, comined with the writing and dialogue, that is original. No one has said anything about the myths and legends being original.

Keep making comments like this to give more validity to GW2 fans being 'overzealous'.

God you people are irritating. Luckily GW2 community is full of reasonable and level headed people who outnumber people like you.

O rly?  I mentioned MoP too, I was talking about the games that were going to make people not want to play TSW.  That's all I was doing.  Because you read something into my message is not my problem.  Don't call me out based on assumptions, there's enough flaming going on on these boards as it is.

Now uhm... isn't GW2 published by NCsoft?

Yep it is, but it's developed by Anet. BIG BIG difference there bub. You'll see why once the numbers are in at launch.

Same difference. ANET is NCSoft. NCSoft owns that a$$.

Not to be cheeky, but GW2 and MoP will make those layoffs permanent.

(OT: And another GW2 fan comes in to start a flame war.)

This is sad news.  More proof that the P2P model is gone and there is only room left for F2P.  I just hope it's only that and not the beginning of the end of the genre.

Game certainly doesn't deserve this.  There was some real creative stuff in this one.

yeah sure and you're worse than him because he didn't only mention GW2 he also mentioned MoP, but I guess your blind hate for the game doesn't let you see that (tunnel vision much)

On topic:

had they NOT been so greedy and picked either SUB or CS it would've still had a pretty good chance, the game does have some good points, that said even if the game's main focus is NOT the combat but the missions and conspiracies. If there's fighting the animations and the effects need to be of high quality. I played the beta and quit after an hour because of the weird looking animations and copy paste effects and animations.

SWTOR was also developed by BioWare.

EA wholly own and manage Bioware. It's just a trading name, now the good will (in the name) is used up it will be dumped is my hunch.

NCsoft wholly own Arenanet and have since 2002.
