...that so many are complaining about what end game there is or isnt, that there wont be enough of an incentive to continously play, that there isnt gear treadmill, etc etc.

I've played a huge amount of MMORPGs, and from my experience, which honestly mostly comes from the most widely known gear treadmill - WoW - people tend to care about something more than anything else: looks. GW2 is indeed the mesiah to me, at last, I can play a game where skill is what counts and cosmetic gear to make myself look good while doing it. I honestly don't know what circles some of you run around in that you don't experience the same "I want to look awesome" vibe flowing from everyone. Nearly every guild member and MMORPG player i've ever spent time with has always truly enjoyed the most simpliest of mechanics: looking cool. This game is ALL about delivering that? How are you not entertained? HOW!?

Maybe some others have eluded to this same point, but either way, it needed to be said.

(I could list my MMORPG credentials, but what's the point? Not like they are verifiable. Anyways though, easily tried at least 100 over the last decade~).

Ceaseless

I think people are just concerned about a  "Hook".   Be it AA's, Realm Points, Grinding for gear sets.

Most successfull MMOs have always had that addictive lure that makes you obsessed with achieving or obtaining certain things that makes you come back for more.

Will guld wars have that obsessive "hook"?  who knows.

The way mmo's were: Community, Exploration, Character Development, Conquest.

The way mmo's are now : Cut-Scenes,Cut-Scenes, Linear Story, Cut-Scenes...

Fair enough, but like I said about cosmetics, Legendaries sound like the exact hook most are clamoring for.

and i thought the opposite.

while i love cosmetic gear and finding new and cool looks for my character i would have thought most people would be concerned such a system would lack long term playability.  simply because with WOW, Rift, and so many others offering gear grinds that is what most are accustomed to having in a game.

not arguing with you though, i'm very much on board with the plan.  excited to try this out and see how it works for me.

If it was only about looking cool, then GW2 would be way behind, seriously GW2 graphics aren't that great. Several games have more impressive graphics and thus cooler looking characters. I'm not a fan of Aion or Terra but if all you want is to stand around looking cool/awesum then you should really check those out as they kick GW2's but in the looking cool/awesum stand point.

looks aren't everything especially when that impressive looking character in a MMO is most likely a nerdy 12 y/o or 300 pound old fart in RL.

You get to farm a hell of a lot of Skills that you will use in hells of alot of combinations , hidden quests , etc.

This game in my oppinion is 1 of the best things that could ever happen to the MMORPG industry.it's a game made for the hardcore players(not to be confused with hardcore GRINDERS).It's a game where the skill is all that counts as you pointed out.Alot of the good players have jobs and families and don't have the time to farm like a maniac for the best damn gear that would give you an edge over a skilled player. This might loose some of the players but it will keep the players that actually want to play a very good game in which they can have fun , look awesome(cosmetic gear) and shine with skills in pvp , cc , tactics (not having a fully geared tank run you through dungeons/raids who can just stay in front of the big OMG boss without taking any dmg).

To be honest i can't w8 for the game , i'll enjoy it every day ( for 2-3 hours since i have a job and a family) , i'll have lots of fun and if i want to grind i'll grind those over 200 skills.

Regards,

Skip

Not most of the ppl know this but all of the gw2 videos that have come out until now were run on dx9 , they will implement dx10 on release and prolly dx11 only after a few months..so the graphics that you have seen until now will mean nothing until the end of the year.

I'm not sure who is misinformed here but I've heard from people that gear matters, and others that it doesn't matter.

I never understood that either ... People do care more about looks than about gameplay.

I even less understand when we know that :

- 95% of the time their eyes are on skill bars instead of their char

- their char is always seen from the back

- nobody cares about other players looks (and as a matter of fact, these people bent on looks refuse to realize that)

So in the end, to caricature, looks are only valuable those 10 seconds every hour when you do a camera 360° around your char, out of boredom. How great. :p

It matters, just not so much, oh and there are numerous ways to get equivalent gear (grinding a raid not being one of them) and you will want different sets for different builds and stuff.

I honestly have yet to understand how anyone considers Gw2 graphics poor, I find them far more eye pleasing than any other MMORPG currently out there. I have played all the most recent ones too... frankly, I'm dumbfounded. It's like people are looking at terrible quality SS and never played.

Gear CAN matter, but not so much in the traditional sense. It's semi-important while leveling, and it can be used to alter builds at max level. There is no stacking of stats however like gear treadmills.

GW2 is one of the best looking MMOs there is and the character models ditto, so I'm not really sure what your point is.

WoW looks like crap vs. most contemporary MMOs,but that doesn't prevent people from buying or grinding for stuff that "makes them look cool" in the context of the game.

When you think about it, the whole gear grind thing is pointless. You play one tier to gain the gear you need to play the next tier, but the new gear cancels out the increased difficulty of the new tier, so you really aren't unlocking anything you haven't already done before. What does happen is that the new gear trivializes previous content, so you end up just replacing one narrow slice of content for another.

In GW2, there are three level 80 dungeons at launch, each with at least four seperate "wings". Since it isn't that difficult to gain max stat gear at level 80, the value for drops becomes the appearance of the gear and the prestige of wearing it. Unlike gear grind games, rather than grinding one Dungeon for months, earning gear so that you will be ready for the next Dungeon to be released, in GW2 you maintain access to all 8 Dungeons and 33 Dungeon wings. Level scaling keeps them challenging and since you are more after the skins than the stats, they all continue to offer you value of rewards and the ability to provide you with fun.

Of course, unlike most MMOs, Dungeons aren't the only thing to do once you reach the level cap. There is world PvE content tailored for level 80 cooperative play, plus level scaling keeps virutally the entire world open to you as viable content. I think by the time most people reach level 80 in GW2, they will start to understand why a game you play in order to have fun is better than a game you play just to reach some artificial "end game".

World vs World is the spiritual successor to Realm vs Realm from Dark Age of Camelot and will provide many hundreds of hours of play for a fair portion of GW2 players. sPvP also fills a niche. Some people will play it as an adjunct to PvE and WvW, others will play only for sPvP. PvP in GW1 is still very active all these years later and I have no doubt GW2 will garner a similar hollowing.

GW2 is also the most alt friendly MMO in a long time, if not ever. Not only are their five races with their own starting zones and story, but the world is massive, there is huge redundancy of leveling content, the game is very immersive and Dynamic Events ensure that even when you do tread over the same ground, you are lilely to encounter content you missed before. A large percentage of MMO players extend their time with an MMO they like via alts, rather than "end game grinds", something that many Raiders seem to forget.

Most MMOs have nothing to offer you once you reach the level cap except for a Dungeon Raid Gear Grind. In GW2, the entire game is "end game" and you never have more content available to you than you do when you reach the level cap. It's a whole new paradigm and most people will have trouble returning to "the grind" in current or future MMOs, once they get a real taste of a game that offers players much, much more.

Being able to customize my own character and wear what looks good and not what has better stats matter a great deal to me.

I think people will enjoy it just fine, a lot of us are just afraid of change and it takes longer for some of us to get used to it than others.  For years, WoW was the standard to be lived up to with it's gear grind scam, but people have the intellectual potential to realize they don't need stats to prove they can master difficult content.  Those who can't realize this, well, they have plenty of other games to play.

As for Aion and Tera looking better than GW2, I don't agree.  The designs in GW2 are much more appealing ot me, regardless of polygon count - I want epic armor, not different variations of metal swimsuits...

no GW2 won't kill WoW, but it's time to move on and quit worrying about those people still playing it. - eyelolled

Its valid to have a concern about End Game.

GW2 is a theme park.

And like all Theme Parks.

Eventually you want to get back in your car and go home.
