Depends on what you deem hardcore.  My personal definition is the one that requires the most time investment to achieve anything.

I'd say SWTOR is the most time consuming to actually get anything done of the 4 listed and with its crappy gear grinds etc its by far the one that would swallow the most time.

GW2 is probably the most casual and pick up and play as and when you want.

Lineage 2 was the most time consuming game EVER :)  but awesome for it.

Hardcore by definition is subjective.  No game is hardcore, it may be difficult or it may require a lot of time to achieve certain game thresholds.

The term hardcore in my definition is placed upon a person due to the length of time they play a game. I'm currently out of work so I spend more time playing an MMO then I would normally so that would consider me being harcore, and is not a title that I would be to proud of flaunting.

Lineage 1 takes more time than L2, and L1 is much more successful in east than L2(L2 got a little more carebear nowadays, but at least they balanced the classes a little bit with the awakening ones).

I miss the open world grind(solo and group grind) in old school MMOs like L1, where at anytime you can be surprised by enemy clans...

Where enemy clans fight all over the world for open bosses and best hunting grounds like this:

That's what made those Olde Tyme Hardcore/Casual War threads so very, very entertaining...years of arguing, tens of thousands of threads, excessive trolling; all over two vaguely conceptualized undefined terms.

You left out Aion. It's way more hardcore than any of those games... Except Eve of course...

Counting the "This game is too hard..." and "I'll quit because i hit a wall..." postings in the forums, i'll have to say TSW.

But its still not hardcore, its just not the todays usual "pull the mobs and bomb everything to the moon with aoe" PVE and the annoying "collect these 2347 apples for me" Quests as seen in the other games.

Hodor!

Believe me, there are people complaining about the grind in GW2.. just go to GW2 forum, a I said before in that thread:

It's sad to see that MMOs in west became single player games where players just want make some campaign(quest chains) alone while rush to level cap via those quests, and after that, just go to instances to experience the multiplayer content. MMOs are not about a solid community anymore, where you need to play in groups to arrive somewhere, it's not about a persistent world where you need to fight along with your alliance against enemy guilds over the world for open world bosses and territory control. It's just about a linear questing to the level cap and after, just live in instaces all day long... sad, if it takes more than 3 days to reach level cap, everybody complains because what they want is to farm gear and archievements in instances forever or to farm points in arenas...

Getting to the top of PvP: WoW

This is quite amusing, to be honest.

I've been playing WoW since release, and at the moment, all I do is PvP in WoW, while waiting for GW2...

PvP in WoW is fun (once you passed the "gear grind"), but let's be honest... there's nothing hardcore in it. It's all about gear and having the right class association, and the gameplay is all about STOPPING THE OPPONENT FROM PLAYING.

Stun, interrupt, sap, root, freeze, cyclone, etc... WoW PvP is all about making the other guy unable to fight back while you bash or nuke him to death. Calling it hardcore is a sad joke.

This said, WoW is not the only culprit... the concept of excessive crowd control was introduced in DAoC, and copied in many games after that including WoW. That was the most lame mechanic ever introduced to PvP of the MMO genre (I mean excessive CC, not just CC). I like how more recent game seem to return to very short crowd control mechanics (a couple of seconds, not more).

Of the four listed? Hm. Since my definition of hardcore is "difficulty," rather than "time investment," I'd have to go GW2. Several enemies in the 15+ zones will take you out in 2 hits, and you really need to play smart around them. It has the most difficult dungeons of the four by far, and the explorable required more tactics and team effort than half of the raids I did in WoW or Rift.

TSW deservs an honorable mention for some of its quests; there are some pretty difficult/ complex ones in there, which is refreshing.

For PvP? GW2 all the way. No gear dependancy, well-designed maps. WoW is too much about stunlocks and TSW's maps were terribly designed (though interesting. I thought they were somewhat innovative).

If I were to include games not on the list, probably EvE in my personal experience. If you timed something wrong, or didn't align, or whatever, you could lose a gigantic amount of money very quickly.

Original Darkfall. Before they made skillign easier, before medation..no macros..playing the game as intended.

Cant think of any game out that was less hardcore in terms of pvp (being full loot and the safe zones which werent very safe) in terms of pve (would take years to max out a character without cheating) and in terms of sticking new players in front of a goblin spawn that was able to shoot arrows and kill you before you could even see them. No real tutorial no easy mode to ease new players in....oh and the GUI was a hot mess and half the battle.

Shit was hardcore.

Last i checked thought he TPS crowd is in full control of developers...20x XP on skills easy dungeons for noobs and 2.0 wich is going to nullify progress.

Western gamers as a whole just hate anything difficult these days, its a shame.

I heard from GW2 fans that GW2 will be very very hard core because you must be best in the world to win! Because gear wont matter!!

Who did wrong? The advertiser hired to sell the game or the consumer who put faith in advertising?

8/02/12 9:56:07 PM#114

Which do you think is more Hard Core?

TSW for 30 min, 5 days a week?

GW2 for 30 min, every other week?

WoW for 80 hours per week?

SWToR for 2 hours per day, 6 days a week?

Now, what is more hardcore?

Games

or

the way people play them

I don't know what you find amusing unless I'm missing something...

Human opponents give you more challenge than A.I. Correct?

Then obviously the more human opponents you have, then higher the level of challenge correct?

So since WoW had THE most human opponents available for you to fight in it's PvP system, then it makes it that much harder to climb to the top, no?

It doesn't matter if you like how the system is setup or the weapons used in the fight, each side gets access to the same gear/skills to use.

I'll explain it in terms that are more simple:

Take two senarios:

  • Game A has 500k players and 200k participate in PvP.
  • Game B has 9 million players and 3 million participate in PvP.

Only 1 player can be crowned king of their respective game. Who do you think had the hardest climb to the top? The player from Game A or the player from game B? It's like that scene from Knockaround Guys with Vin Disel where he goes into the hick bar and finds the meanest mf-er in the bar and says to him : 500. Dude looks at him like what? Then he says 500 fights. Then you can consider yourself a legitimate toughguy. Same point...

Barbie's playhouse can be plenty hardcore depending on date and model and the context in which it's used. You really should define hardcore, because all games do have hardcore aspects to them. None of the games listed have harsh player penalties like permadeath, so the most obvious mark of "hardcore" isn't there. I mean you could call Tera the most "hardcore" purely based on some of the armour sets in it.

I feel sorry for somenoe that considers these games hardcore. While people cry to find the easiest themepark to play the "end game" right after they create the character, I have more fun in CoD MW3 multiplayer, I see no diference between it and pvp in themeparks, except that you control soldiers in CoD/BF3.
