Massive part of gaming history? While it is a big franchise, you are going a bit over the edge there ;)

If you watch a game, it’s fun. If you play it, it’s recreation. If you work at it, it’s FF-XIV.

Pokemon had the best element table of any game ever the end. I am a fan of pokemon's Element table but not a fan of the actual pokemon. Maybe if they went more anime with it the longer it was out like naruto/one piece i would still like it.

@Valua the OP....

I think Pokemon is crap. I always have.

Opinions are Opinions. We all have a few. We don't have to agree.

If you like Pokemon... then good for you. Enjoy.

It's already made gaming history, it's the second biggest gaming franchise of all time, games and merchandise.

I'd even go so far as to say it's made more of an impact on the world in the last 14 years than any other game/gaming franchise (Mario included.) Not for only game sales, but for the rest of the franchise and merchandise, and it brought more people physically (not online) together than any other game I can recall.

It's nearly 20 years younger than Mario and isn't very far behind in sales and fandom, I'd even say Pokemon is almost more popular than Mario for this fact (Mario is clearly the largest part of gaming ever.)

Pokemon is clearly a massive part of gaming history. That is an unquestionable fact.

I grew up watching GI Joe, Conan the Barbarian, and Thundercats cartoons.  Pokemon was too late to catch me.  I don't necessarily hate the franchise, but I avoid it and tune out conversations involving it because I don't care to learn about "catching them all".  Ok, I may have seen the cartoon a few times and not turned it off immediately out of curiosity- but don't tell anyone, please.

A lot of people dislike it because it is in WoW. If WoW came up with a cure to cancer, people will hate on that too.

But I think one thing the OP is spot on. You 30-40 year olds play as an elf/gnome/orc etc. in a world populated with ridiculous creatures and you don't find that nerdy/for kids?

To discount Pokemon from gaming history is a bit silly. It is one of Nintendo's heaviest hitters they got and has been for a long time.

I personally still think nintendo fucked up royally when they passed on the oppertunity to create a pokemon MMORPG.

Instead they are content with remaking the same fucking game over and over and over again. Seriously how is pokemon black and white 2 any different then blue, red or yellow?

Nintendo has gotten lazy as hell the last 5 years. Just rehasing mario, metroid and zelda.

I think pokemon in WoW will do just fine, because people obviously like pokemon, 1million preorders for black and white 2. Its just people are haters, and haters gotta hate, if they arent playing wow then who cares, if they are playing wow they will play the pokebattles.

Pokemon was one of the gaming "Lighttowers",

Amzing? No, not if you realize:

Space invaders and Pacman got all the attention (bloody mainstream arcade games) but we all knew that Defender abd Asteroids were the only "true" arcade games...

Hehe, I wonder how that shit would have looked if we had internet-forums 30 years ago :)

We dont need casuals in our games!!! Errm... Well we DO need casuals to fund and populate our games - But the games should be all about "hardcore" because: We dont need casuals in our games!!!

Biggest gaming company in the world.

Wii sold more consoles than Xbox and PS3 combined.

Where is your proof that Nintendo isn't relevant exactly?

Logic, reason and fact do not supersede human nature. Ignorance reigns without justice.

7/29/12 7:42:41 PM#77

Pokémon was one of the bright points of gaming for me when I was quite young.  It's been what, 17 years since the franchise was first concocted?  I do remember fondly playing it on the gameboy when on the bus or something; it's something that's held a great spot in my gaming career and still continues to shine to this day.

Assuming I was roughly correct about the time frame, it places me roughly at 10 years old when I first played it.  To this day I still have an urge to hook it back up, or watch a youtube or twitch of the gameplay.  That said, there is a great deal of older gamers who absolutely are enthralled by the who Pokémaniac thing that has continued to press on.

It's very simple where one could see that adding any type of Pokémon is a shout out to an older generation, as it is a classic of a game that existed on the original game boy back in the 90's.  Indeed, and I have also noticed a great deal of young teenagers knock it off as "a kids game" when the very foundation and age group for said games are in the upper 20's and lower 30's at the moment; they have the money to buy or do in fact try to share in the experience with their own children.

It's one of those phenoms that extends itself beyond the gap and presents an interesting situation where the "hardcore" (of that genre) gamers back in the day place a game on a pedastal that was originally made for them when they were young themselves.  Honestly, I'd say it's ignorance of the scene to simply dismiss it as a kid's game or childish in any fashion; it's the same to call gamers themselves anti-social losers by those who don't understand or are into such.

Ultimately it comes down to a word I used before -- ignorance -- when a game is represented with a blast to the past or something else that isn't considered mainstream.  If you take a look at a new MMO you get a dozen posts of people saying "Lame" or "lol 2001 graphics trolololol" almost instantly without them even taking a look at the game or playing it.  They have a sort of product loyalty that condemns anything not it, and it's near blasphemous to put anything perceived as "cutsey" into the equation.

Those who grew up during an age where graphics weren't as important as they are today are a little less prone to making such rash accuasations.  It is imperative, however, that proper evaluation be conducted, markets be researched and the subject matter thoroughly tested before such could be taken seriously.  Opinions are great, but misinformed opinions are the bane of my existance as a historian; the line between primary and secondary documentation is becoming blurred beyond repair, and even certain peer reviewed documentations are full of misconstrued phrases that are of opinions that lack necessary training to provide adequate information of notable worth.

Sadly, we even get reviews from players who have played a game for eight years and then condemn it saying "This sucks" and totally disregarding the eight years they played.  Why would one play for that many years if it sucked?  Does one change warrant hatred over years of entertainment?  And how can thousands of hours of play time not be worth what you paid for a game?  It's something we also saw/see with ME3 and DIII.  Sure, the "endings" of said games were not up to what I expected them to be, but I spent 50+ hours on them each, enjoyed what I played, and believe the hour to dollar ratio alone was more than worth the money spent.  Yet some gamers today seem to view that a single poison entitles them to whine and complain and warrants extreme hatred of something they once might of loved.

But I disgress...  To answer the thread's title itself, people do in fact dislike pokémon.  People are bound to dislike nearly every game that comes out.  If they give it a chance and find it not to their liking, then more power to them.  Though it is very much a jewel in the rough -- a classic of a game -- that is in the hearts of many of the older generations as well as their own prodigies.

Edit:  One theory could be that they loved a game so much that they have to find a fault as a reason to leave it; that very fault becomes so venomous that they look for vindication in what other people say against a title and add it to their own repertoire.

When faced with strife or discontent, the true nature of a man is brought forth. It is then when we see the character of the individual. It is then we are able to tell if he is mature enough to grin and bare it, or subject his fellow man to his complaints and woes.

You can't be serious. I'm not a Nintendo fanboy by any stretch. They completely lost me as a gamer at the Wii generation, but that doesn't discount that the Wii is one of the best selling game consoles out there, and lets not forget about their DS line up. Nintendo is one of the first party publishers in the industry after all....to discount one of the big 3 is rather foolish.

I'm 46, so naturally pokemon (cards, anime, games) passed me by.  And I have no desire to see what I missed.  But my sons (22, 24, 25) ate it all up and still play the gba games from time to time.

I had to sit through that Pokemon cartoon a few times hanging out with a friend and his kid, and just sort of assumed the whole thing was for little kids. But I admit, I tried playing one of those old Gameboy games and thought it wasn't bad and had prett deep gameplay. It's not my thing, but I certainly don't look down on the franchise or anything.
