Wall of text incoming. TLDR version. Try the game like it's something new, it's just too different.
This game as a natural learning curve. People that are playing it exactly the same way that they did all the other 20 something MMOs they played before this will just not get into the groove. I felt like this at the start.
The game forces you to explore, to try new things, to actually read and find interesting NPCs, if you don't care about your surroundings you'll simply not play the game. My 1st hour in GW2 was very frustrating, i kept trying to grind "quests", i kept trying got get a "rotation", i kept trying to "look for the fast way", and then i simply quit, i logged off and came back one hour latter thinking to myself that this is a new game and we will treat it like it is my first MMO. And guess what? Much better, i started exploring in PVE, starting events on my own and following the NPCs, it felt awesome that for once the NPCs treated my charachter like someone that matters, i impacted the world and changed the areas i played on. Then i started a meta event, and the fact that i had to learn my own way to do it made it very sattisfying...jumping puzzles, hidden caves, veteran and champion mobs that were hidden and that i had to find a way to beat by learning to weapon swap, dodge, know when to use what abilities and how to use them to the best of their power.... I was hooked.
The combat seemed simplistic, but in the end it's much harder then most MMOs, you don't have everything at your disposal at all times, you need to plan a build and know what and when you have to use your abilities, the same class with 2 different weapons is basically 2 different classes.
So i jumped into The Mists and did a simple warrior build and went to PVP, and guess what, i did it like i would have done any other MMO, and i was frustrated. Why couldn't i have a fear effect and berserker while keeping my other utilities? Why should i change weapons, i mean i love maces, i wanted to spam mace attacks! Another hour break. Came back, redid my setup, and it hit me again, almost no 2 warriors will be the same, people can theorycraft but a riffle / mace warrior is not the same as a longbow / Sword-Sword warrior, so i thought about this and engineered a riffle / 2handsword spec. Jumped into pvp and started noticing what my adversaries were doing, i was such a fool, why would i spam maces if i can save skills like hamstring to kite an enemy that as only melee weapons? Why should i try to a berserker against guardians with shields, why was i playing this game like it's a traditional trinity game? Styles make fights and teamwork is the most important thing in GW2 pvp, and i was hooked to pvp.
WvWvW was the same, from lost to found, learning what to do, why to do it and specially what i like doing makes a huge difference. GW2 is a different experience, it's a mix of great ideas, feels like Skyrim PVE, LoL on rage steroids in battleground pvp and has as unique view in Realm vs Realm pvp.
And i think this is the problem for alot of people, because the game feels very very familiar, but at the same time it's so different it makes you unconfortable. |

Well I got a chance to play it a little more today and I enjoyed myself. It's definitely worthy of a purchase. I could see putting some time into this game. The graphics are not over the top amazing but nice, combat has some interesting twists, and there appears to be a decently sized world to explore. I like the public quests too, that's something I really enjoyed in Warhammer Online. I'm glad it made an appearance here.
There's still a lot of basic stuff I haven't learned about the game. But that makes me want to explore it further... |

Really, the events and stuff you can do offers SO much different things, and so much other than kill stuff too. Sure, a lot involves killing, but thats the nature of a MMORPG. Still, you get so many different settings and things to do. I really don't understand how you can say that. And why is colourful negative? Who would prefer all in grey and brown?? Sorry, I am really no PVP expert, but as far as I can tell both the 5 vs 5 and the WvW PVP is so much LESS a zergfest than almost any PVP I had seen for years. You can do so many things in PVP with thinking and strategic planning. There are castles, siege weapons, you can protect supply lines, anything!
So I really have the feeling we are not talking about the same game... I mean if you don't like it, that's ok. But the arguments you write, they are just not coherent with what I see in the game. Holy Trinity who art in our MMORPGs! Blessed be thy speccs, as in WOW so in all MMOs! Our daily loot grant us, and forgive us our noobness, as we forgive the noobs! And do not lead us to disconnects, But deliver us from mediocrity, For thine is the specialization and the teamwork and the endgame, Until cancellation, Amen! |

Originally posted by Aerowyn Actually, i can accept that the hype train is at full speed, just like SWTOR. Do you guys remember when SWTOR hype train was traveling at an unstoppable speed? Some people pointed out the flaws but nobody cared. Final Result... CRASH!!!! The same goes here... The hype train is way too fast, so there is no point in saying that the open world PvP is a Zerg Fest because people wont listen. Wait after a few months after release and everything is going to go downhill. but since there is no subscriptions... Anet can brag about Box sales and tell the world how great is to sell boxes only... |

Originally posted by Pelagato not even close to the same thing, swtor was hyped due to dev's and IP. GW2 is hyped from people actually playing the game and experiencing it.... HUGE difference since it's really not hype at all at this point. I was insanely hyped for swtor then after the stress test weekend I walked off very let down and struggled to make it 3 weeks past launch into the game. GW2 over the course of the beta weekends have already clocked in more hours then i played swtor total AND still cannot get enough.. I angered the clerk in a clothing shop today. She asked me what size I was and I said actual, because I am not to scale. I like vending machines 'cause snacks are better when they fall. If I buy a candy bar at a store, oftentimes, I will drop it... so that it achieves its maximum flavor potential. --Mitch Hedberg |

Originally posted by Pelagato Are you really comparing SWTOR with GW2? its not like we just saw movies of it at this point you know... Both got too much hype, with that i agree, but it doenst mean that both are bad.. For what i saw so far, GW2 is everything the developers said it was. And i think that for 90% of players at least, it also is. |

Originally posted by Ikonis I said the same thing in another thread. "You don't like GW2 you say? Well, clearly you're playing it wrong." I don't have a problem with people liking different things than I do but I guess not everyone feels the same. |

Originally posted by Aerowyn The persistant impacts come in the later zones as you can read the dev diary's they did not want to make the starter zones too differn't for new players Well, they succeeded in that respect because they made the starting zones as mind-numbingly boring as every other MMO's starting zones. The only difference is that ArenaNet somehow managed to add in a great deal of frustration to that boredom due to how different the gameplay is. I, for one, didn't enjoy it at all. I lasted through two days, and on the third day, logged back into Vanguard. |

Originally posted by Mithrandolir I have to agree as Mr. jaded and cynical, I don' think I have had this much fun in a MMO in a very long time. I am consistently engaged with every class and race. I avoided Char Eng until today and it has been a blast. Hilarious as well with power rifle shot and the 5 foot kick :) EXCELSIOR! |
