Originally posted by Xzen +1 I don't consider it grinding when I WANT to play parts of a game again and again. I consider it a grind when i am FORCED to, otherwise my gear is completely obsolete. Also, of course I would spend hours of time for gear that just looks different! Heck, I played Mario Kart for a year and a half with my roommate/friends during college, 4ish hours a day, just to get better and better times, and mostly because the game was fun! I play the same maps again and again in FPS games, because the games are fun, not because I'm getting more powerful or because the content is new and different, but because I'm having fun. Same way with GW2, I have been having a blast the 100+ hours I've played it since closed beta, and I don't see that fun disappearing any time soon (especially since ive only touched like 3% of the game). If you don't think the game is fun, I don't see why one would play it. And if you think a game is fun, don't let others deter you. :) |

Some games report that the sale of 'fashion' items is the biggest money maker from cash shops. I actually have a life besides gaming, so I am not going to grind for anything. I have done it in the past, but, grinding now for me is a case of "been there, done that." I am so amazed that Arenanet removed grinding for OP gear from the sPVP picture. I think that decision is one of the coolest things they have done. Anarchy Online, when they introduced a cash shop, promised to not sell power etc., but recently the AO cash shop has on sale the skins for the some of the best armor is the game. Just to clarify, they are just skins worn 'over' your real armor, so you still only have he stats of your real armor. What once could only be worn by someone who had completed one of the hardest dungeons in the game, is now available, at least cosmetically, for a small fee. I am not suggesting that Arenanet witll do the same thing. Untill the game launches no one knows for sure what kinds of stuff will be in the cash shop, but I think it is highly likely they will sell fashion items. So if you want to grind for cosmetics, please do, be my guest. Me, I am going to play for fun, run dungeons only when I want to, not some arbitrary number of times. If I want to look differnet or cool, I will use the cash shop to scratch that itch. I am looking forward to seeing how this whole experiment plays out. GW2, after 5 years of hype, turns out to be just another Asian end game cash shop grinder. Now that sales have dropped off, F2P can't be far off. |

No, not unless it was something I really wanted, which would depend on the item or set.
I'm more likely to grind for materials and wealth or focus on progression. I do the same in GW1 and get costumes from the item shop if appearance is an issue. |

I would rather grind for it (complete a quest, quest chain, achievement, public event, etc) and have that option to obtain cosmetic gear in game + have the option to buy it in a cashshop for the people who are impatient and don't want to do the grind, rather than just have it only available in a cashshop with no in-game option of obtaining the gear. Because when you have items only in a cashshop, you're only rewarding the "gimme gimme" people and not giving anyone in game the option to obtain it through hard work.
For example Tera has very few cosmetic items for rewards in game, they only reward the impatient "gimme gimme" people via cashshop and neglect cosmetic rewards for players who actually pay for a subscription. |

The guy/girl with the awesome shiny epic or legendary gear in PvP or WvWvW all basically did everyone a favor by painting a giant target over their own heads.

I'm not sure that I would. While I'm excited about the game, and I hope it's fun, I'm not so sure about the gearing. Why have gear if it does not progress or if all of the rewards are purely cosmetic? Could the stats provided by the gear not be tweaked in a simpler way? Then gear could be purely cosmetic, and I wouldn't have to choose one piece over another due to gear, because my stats would be separate. To me, it does not seem like substantial enough of a goal to work toward, and it takes a lot out of the sense of the game being a world, replacing it with an esport feel. Possibly worst of all, it seems that the equalization of gear will destroy any real character progression beyond achieving max level. If you aren't satisfied by purely cosmetic gear, then there won't be anything to work toward, and endgame may quickly become stale and boring. I should point out that I prefer simpler looking gear on characters. If I find a look that I like, I'll stick with it for as long as possible, and dread giving it up for goofy, elaborate looking gear, so that may be part of it. |

This is one of those disturbing times when I realize how startingly out of touch I am with the mainstream in general. I am astounded to see over 80% of respondents would grind for cosmetic gear, something I can't even imagine wasting time on. No wonder so many cash shops sell cosmetic items, something I never would consider purchasing unless it actually did give real benefits/advantage.

I think many players have grinded for "appearance gear" or achievements in their past mmos without thinking about it
for me in GW1 it was grinding faction or materials to get different looking armor in WOW it was grinding for different faction mounts -- the only functionality mounts gave was different looks same w EQ2, different quest series for mounts notably, flaming Rhino mount, Rime Ice mare - all for looks |

While I disagree with using the term "grind," yes, I would dedicate a ton of time in pursuit of prestigious, awesome looking gear. I wouldn't "grind," which I define as repeating a singular task over and over so much that it becomes insanely boring and begins to feel more like work than a game, for anything anymore :p That's just bad gameplay design. It is possible to make a reward require a lot of time, a lot of effort, skill and planning, and still have all the things you need to do to obtain the reward be fun and varied. Who knew?? |

Yeah, why not? If the set appeals to me that much I can grind for it. |

i refuse to vote on such a ridiculous survey. i think the acquisition of cosmetic gear will actually be a fun process. i really dont see ANY grind in GW2. |
