Have you seen FB games lately? FB is just a hub, nothing more. Games are created to connect to it because it has a relatively captive audience, targettable groups, and integrated messaging/broadcast channel. RG believes that social gaming is the future, and he has the vision to see where that is headed. If you're still thinking Farmville when you are talking FB games, you're rather late to the party.

The worst disservice the author did to this article was to include the Ultimate Collector images as the lack of clarity of what they were really colored a lot of the discussion here.

I am interested to see where this goes but if it does end up like most of these social media integrated games that force you to spam your friends, give and receieve useless items and offer limited gameplay by way of some sort of energy bar or timer then  I will avoid it all costs.

The one thing I truly hate more than how bad 90% of facebook games are is the "oh hey you are out of energy buy more now for $9.99 and keep playing today". Most of them barely qualify as games anyway.

It becomes clearer and clearer that there are a lot of people here that either played or were subjected to the older FB games  (x Wars, y Ville) and haven't really looked at anything made in the past year or so.

Anything that you would recommend that doesn't follow this model? You are correct I haven't touched any of these games recently because every one I tried was either exactly the same game in a new skin or had the same restrictions to play.

Why is Richard Garriot doing this in the first place?  Doesn't it show that he only cares about making money in the quickest way possible and is not an enthusiast of the pure genre?

Dedicated people in any field don't swap or dumb down their art form for money, purist will stick to their genre like glue and try and improve on it.  This just smacks of jumping on the FB band wagon and hoping to get a quick gold rush.

Doesn't make a whole lot of sense.  I can see what he is saying but as that platform is taking off for light online experiences, doesn't mean you have to join them.

Here's a few to check out:

Moonlight Online

Age of Titans

Reign of Steel

Gods War

Here are some familiar titles, although the gameplay is much like you described above - the typical Facebook game but with a new skin.

SimCity Social

Civilization Online

I may have mixed my messages above I will state my view clearly:

I do not believe they will make more than or even close to the investment of funds he has managed to raise.  These are pocket money games and I do not see the volume of people with the desire to play these games and pay for them on a continual basis to anywhere near the level of investment.

It's impressive how loyal people are to devs which produced something good like 15 years ago. It's like those die hard fans of a 1 album bands which play the same song for 30 years and people are still willing to through money at them.

People. Take a look at The Secret World. There's a Facebook button in the settings that enables social networking aspects outside of the game. What he's talking about is social media integration in the MMO. you're fools if you don't believe this is the direction games will be going and RG as usual is way ahead of all of us.

I'm a little appalled at how many people think he is a "hack" or whatever in this thread.  What you guys have to realize is that if UO never came out, Richard Garriott would still be an incredibly influential industry icon.

Ultima was an SPRPG series LONG before it was an MMORPG.  In fact, Ultima I came out in 1980..1980!  And there were probably over 14 Ultima games in total.  The fact of the matter is that Garriott's Ultima series was a tremendous influence on ALL computer RPGs, and probably played a large part in shaping their direction.

Trying to dismiss all of Garriott's accomplishments simply because you don't like what he is doing now is ridiculous.  Show some respect people ;).

No respect for him at all.  He used Tabula Rasa to help him raise money to get into space then shut the game down when he landed, or was it announced during his trip to space.  I bet all the games he has his name on were maybe 10% created by him.  The other 90% were the talent he had working for him.  No respectr for him at all.  TR was fun the first time through, but the way it ended was very underhanded in my book and my book is not your book.

I don't begrudge such an industry giant a good retirement, but the rubbish games he is now reduced to making out are good can only make you wince with distaste.

Richard Garriot reminds me of Johnny Drama from Entourage.  Had his day in the sun, now spends all his time trying to get back into the spotlight.

It's good to see a few break from that.  I will definitely try them out because, well I'm a gamer and I'll try most any game a few times.  It just as good to know what you don't like and why than it is to have limited experience and think you only like one thing.

Can you tell me what the difference is between Moonlight Online(PH) and just Moonlight Online?  The pages seem related, but there are two apps for them.  I'm not sure what the PH means, but I was guessing Portable Handheld -- that was a total guess though.  Maybe it means Phillipines?

One thing I still really don't like about FB games and most social apps is how much personal info they directly harvest from me.  All my photos... really?  The rest of my gaming activity?

I'd play one of these facebook RPG's if, and only if when I kill someone in the game it kills their facebook page.  Now that would be some serious fun!

You guys are all missing the boat, this man has a plan to generate income to fund a game that will both include the bluebies and the hardcore gamer. He  wants to have a very large pool of players, take all the people that are into crafting, let them craft and pay a minimal charge for the game. Let them build you everything you need to go out and start killing, eachother or monsters. His buisness plan is genious. I hope he can pull it off. Think of all the farmvillers paying 2 dollers to craft and find rares/ make magic items.. then the people that are into the social aspect of running towns and inviting friends to be on councles etc.. With a monthly charge going to the people that have the most drain on the servers for high res fast frames for fighting and PVE. The mans a Guru! His plan is for these first games to pay for the game we all have been waiting for since EA killed the last good game he made. Stop hating, and start praying that he pulls it off, hes probably the only hope for any future to the MMOs that have been stale and very cookie cutter for the last 12 years! Anyone hating this early in the process I cant wait to PK you in the years to come!

People put too much faith in Richard Garriott. Sure, I enjoyed Ultima games and Ultima Online is still one of my all time favorites, however, can anyone honestly name one recent RG project that actually did well? His last big production MMO failed and now he's on a social media kick making what looks like Zynga-type games.

I don't have any issues with mobile phone gaming. I actually wish that more developers took it seriously and started releasing real games, instead of little 5 minute puzzle and gimmicky touch games. I just don't think that it's a good market for a proper MMOs. Who the hell is going to spend hours on their phone doing raids or some shit?
