The doctors say his chances are 50/50...but there's only a 10% chance of that. |

It hurts a little bit to say this since it was my MMO of choice for over a decade, but I think right now the biggest ripoff for MMOs has to be Everquest 1. Today you have monthly subscriptions that don't seem to pay for content updates since there are no content updates outside of the yearly expansions which you also have to pay $40+ for. Then factor in that the yearly expansions have probably half the content or less of old expansions like Kunark and Velious. Plus, you have a cash shop, which includes things like the custom guild hall, among others. Seems like today Everquest just exists as a funding source for Planetside 2 and (presumably) Everquest Next. |

First and foremost, I would have to say Blizzard is clearly the least greedy, most altruistic of all the game publishers. This exemplary developer has brought joy and escape from the brutal harshness of our daily reality to literally MILLIONS of human beings. This generous game developer has -- rather than wasting time and resources developing pointless additional content for WoW -- instead brought us lovely purchaseable mounts to enjoy for ourselves and which can be gifted to our loved ones for a mere 25 USD. I'm sure it took them a fraction of the time and resources to develop these wonderful mounts compared to weeks or months for additional content patches.
By focusing on quick delivery for a modest fee, Blizzard could bring happiness and joy to the greatest number of people rapidly.
I can build my case by turning to their most recent offereng of Diablo 3. This lovely game was designed to bring happiness to so many people. Years in this making, this game delivered endless opportunities to have fun beyond the mere hack and slash loot gathering of Diablo 1 and 2. Unselfishly, Blizzard brought us a new dynamic to enjoy -- of course you all know what I'm talking about -- the wonderful Auction House. Not only did the development team of Diablo 3 selflessly consider how we might enhance our enjoyment of the Diablo universe with the Gold Auction House, no...they didn't stop there...they went beyond that to offer us the chance to have a REAL MONEY Auction House, so that we could profit actually play for free! We could make back the intitial cost, really a pittance of 60 USD, merely a token to cover Blizzard's costs in bringing us this joy -- we could make that money back with the RMAH. And Blizzard, of course they need to feed their families, would only take a very tiny, trivial part of the proceeds of each and every transaction for themselves, just to keep the servers up for us. For us! That is how generous Blizzard is. But wait. I'm off topic. I could go on and on, but our OP wants to know about mmorpgs.
In that case, yes, I will have to say World of Warcraft brought to us by Blizzard. They didn't take the easy way out with free server transfers. No...In order to provide the highest level of service and content, they bit the bullet and took the difficult decision to charge a measily, stinking, pathetically trivial 25 USD for server transfers, just to keep the devs fed, and so Bobby could make ends meet, so they could continue pumping out all their updates and joyful iterations of the greatest game in the history of MMORPG, as proven beyond the shadow of any doubt by the gargantuan subscriptions numbers of God's gift to mmorpg gamers.
Thank you Blizzard. If you don't agree with me that WoW is the greatest and least greedy mmorpg of all time you must be a troll, or a whiner, or a spoiled brat who wants everything handed to them on a silver platter -- or you have a sense of entitlement. Wait did I catch it all. Heck, I'm sure I'm forgetting something.
That's all I can think of now. Thank God for World of Warcraft. |
