I'm not paying that.

well vat is £2 for every £10+ everything else in the uk has gone up..gaming is no different.i think also i cannot remember the last time there was an increase in subs from my wow days..i payed £8.99 a month 6 yrs ago..i think its inevitable that prices increase considering there have been no rises in sub fees from what i've played for years..i,m still gonna play..i mean ffs most people spend that on 3 pints of beer in one night or more.

Considering every other MMO.. SWTOR, WOW, TERA, pick one.. are £8.99 incl VAT a month asking £12.99 is a bit cheeky. Especially when it's only 1 country being asked to pay 40% extra.

Well gotta say after beta weekend I was ready to buy it, but paying £4 more a month than every other game is making me think twice now. It's not just the money it's the arrogance of Funcom to think they can get away with charging 30% more than other publishers. I can easily afford it, but this irks me to the point I might just play ToR until GW2 comes out.

That is a strong stand my friend, playing tor out of spite would require incredible will power as bad as that game is. :)

You're right, lol. I hope the force is with me.... or I might just go back to Rift.

There is no reason to go crazy.  Back to Rift?  Mine as well play a F2P and save some money.  You don't want to smack yourself in the head and look back at it as the dark age.

^^That attitude is one of the main reasons why we ended up with Cash Shops in games. No developer has had the guts to raise the monthly sub, but they needed to increase their income somehow. Very few things in the world still cost exactly the same as they did 10 years ago. Yet MMO players expect to always pay the same as they did in 2002...

There is no justification for subscription fees anymore. Server and bandwith costs are a fraction of what they used to be 10 years ago and quite frankly the usual, once every 3-4 month update patch that has maybe an instance, a raid or a few more quests does not justify the $60 cost in subscriptions. That's a price of a whole new game right there.

Subscriptions are a ripoff and only serve to reward lazy development practices. Think about it, Funcom sold you a whole game for $50 and 4 months later sold you a raid and a few quests for $60 ($15x4 months).

I questioned the unfair pricing via a support ticket and got this fallacy in reply:

Greetings,

Thank you for contacting Funcom customer support!

The base prices for the games are universal and that it is the exchange rates that cause the payments to change based on the currencythat is being used. I apologize for the inconvenience this causes for you.

If you have any other questions regarding this issue, please feel free to reply directly to this e-mail and I'll be happy to assist you further.

LOL Lazy development practices, you sound like a cheapskate. Lemme guess you expect a PC from 5 years ago to run the latest and greatest as if it was brand new also? I guess you prefer to be nickle and dimed by all these "free to try" game now on the market.

completely agree, it's time the sub finally dies, it's archaic it's very 1998 and it's no longer the best way of profiting in these companies, in fact most games that have a sub A: never hit what THEY would call a successful mark (they always hit their minimum then two-three months have passed) B: when they do switch to F2P or Freemium or B2P they have a massive sustained boom of revenue coming in. The writing is on the wall. they just need to get a clue in their numbers department. The WoW model will soon lose many subs due to their lackluster content updates and their extremely slow expansion developement and we'll see many a annual sub drop suddenly when the term ends. It's only a matter of time really.

These devs of these new titles tho need to take a long hard look at every F2P game out there and their numbers so they too can see the math is in favor of F2P/B2P.

Like how you resort to namecalling instead of even looking at his point. I'll give you a hint, it's a valid one. Another thing, usually the first one to start spouting insults in a dialogue lost the argument / is in the wrong. It's what kids do when they don't have anything more to say.

Simply put, there are already games out that offer more for less money. It's a fact. What they don't offer is one of the coolest storylines we've seen in an MMO for a long time.

Everyone just needs to be reminded of WoW. They had the long standing practice of forcing people to stay online as fricken long as humanly possible to do anything worth while in game. Remember dailies for rep, extremely long Raids that take a week to finish, repetative dungeon running to earn enough currency to get the gear you need?  Anyone remember that? Yeah, that's what this guy is talking about. Abusive behavior by the company execs. Now they are blatant about their greed (D3) because they know there are people stupid enough to buy into their game designs and claim "it's okay because it's blizzard". the RMAH is just the new subscription fee.

Arenenat already proven to the world that subs are not necessary and are greed driven. the only people on board with the subs are people who aren't paying attention.

you sir arent making any sense. i prefer my candy bar or soda when it comes to greedy developers. Thank you.

They are charging more in UK and thats bad.... so if people refuse to pay they lower the price to the equivalent in the US. As peeps continue to pay it then the developers will make that price the standard.

They want to look like EA now..... EA has the bad habit to throw in some crappy stuff to every digital download and call it digital deluxe so they can charge US$80 for the game as a standard price.

Just stop supporting crap and they will be forced to 1) give us the content that really worth that money or 2) lower the price to what their actual content actually worth which is way way waaaaaay lower.

Why even charge a sub

when you think most mmos lose 30-50% of player base in the first month even before the first sub is taken

they probably lost more in box sales than they will make in subs

I'd cancelled anyway, this just makes me think I did the right thing. I'll pick it up and play through at some stage I guess. Roll on GW I suppose. Screw them, though they did make me a tidy sum (shorting stock) when AoC launched.

How much does an evening at the movies cost if you go alone?  In the U.S., I can see a movie for about $10 if I don't buy snacks or a drink.  So, if I can enjoy a MMO for three hours in a month, I'm getting my money's worth of entertainment from it.  If I play an hour per day on weekdays and four on weekends, that's about 36 hours per month, or about $.40 per hour.  At that rate, MMOs are cheap.

But, I want to hear how expensive a movie is in the UK.  Maybe your ticket prices are so cheap that it makes more sense to see a first-run movie if you want to be entertained.

Ouch way too much money for this game. The box price should be more than enough to cover the content. If you think about it the skys the limit on how much money they want to make. The more expansions they push out the more money they make. Instead the want you to pay for you hope to see down the line. Good luck gamers

If im paying a subscription i better play 24 hours a day to get my moneys worth which is pathetic. Sorry but the entire game is worth the retail price only. The Subscription is the entrance to the milking chamber.

I would consider a $15/month subscription if the game is free to download.

And not, im not being a cheap-ass.... im actually being smarter than the companies who try to rip my pokkets off while giving me a crap mmo. Sad people dont see it that way and keep giving them money for nothing. At least my money is well spent elsewhere.

So to sum it up no one from scotland is gonna play this game?

Gotcha..

Are the servers going to be worldwide or seperate for different regions? I wonder if lifetime sub would be 200 quid. Would be a lark.

Nope, we'll all be too busy laughing at the morris dancers down south while ordering a Welsh leek curry from the Bomb'ay takeout in Ireland.

If you want to play a game that charges you for the box, then allows you to play online as much as you like without paying more, play a console game.  However, don't complain to me when you get bored after a month.  Those types of games are designed so you will play them for a week then buy the next game.  Instead of spending $15 per month on a subscription, you spend $120 or $240 on new games.  The $15 subscription fee is simply a way to support continued development of the game.

Free-to-play games have diluted the sense of value in too many people's minds.  Sure, you get to play a game for "free" but you get screwed on quality if the game doesn't do something to encourage people to buy something from their cash shop.  Name one free-to-play game that didn't start as a subscription game, but still has the quality of subscription games.  There are only a handful, and they all manage to squeeze MORE than $15 per month out of people who want to play it as their primary MMO.

Guild Wars is the only exception to the above.  They managed to make their game so efficiently that the box fee paid for continued development.  Expansions continued to fuel the development, but only due to the popularity of the game in Asia.
