I firmly believe that fiction should be designed around the game and not the other way around. Original IPs are best for MMORPGs. Also you can't disappoint existing fans. There's no-one comparing and complaining how and where the game differs from the fiction and how the game should be.

Actually, there are 2 ways you can decide a game:

1. You take a premade system of mechanics, say the classic trinity mechanics of most themeparks. There you are right, slapping it on top of a world not designed for it gets at best cheesy. However other game mechanics like FPS mechanics, UO system or whatever becomes really bad slapped on the wrong setting.

2. You take a world and create original mechanics to fit perfectly for it. For some reason have this been done many times in singleplayer games (not so often the last 10 years though) but never for MMOs (possibly DDO excluded).

Either method work well, the problem starts when lazy devs take Wow and exchange its world with a famous IP (and usually add loads of bugs as well).

A Western-Themed sandbox mmo.

There would be multiple factions: Citizens, Outlaws, Indians. You would fight over land which could be developed with farms, cattle ranches, or towns, each giving different bonues or cash to buy supplies . Railroads would be the fast travel. No levels, just increases in skills when using a weapon (Shotguns, Handguns, Rifles). Clothing would be cosmetic only. You have to eat and drink water to keep you alive.

Like an old western DayZ but no perma death? keep your loot/skills?

That would be awesome, sandbox MMORPG, non fantasy...

What about some form of sneak calss? Like an apache indian?!

I'm liking it!

Rober Jordan's Wheel of Time Series.

Aes Sedai and Ashaman for multiple varieties/specialies of magic users, Warders, Warriors, and multiple factions.

In the right hands, it could be spectacular.

4 Land of Sound
5 Land of Water

Yeah no perma death, just a death penalty like other players being able to take your gear. When you die you wake up in a dusty local hospital, down a few bucks for the care.

You could have player housing where you could store more weapons in case you get looted.

Also being able to attack the trains would make fast travel more interesting, forcing those who are riding to defend it.

You could argue in MMORPG land that LOTRO and ME is the original that all others followed.

Sure you could...if you wanted to be wrong.

LOTR was not the first, Conan came long before it and the Genre's roots are from Alexandre Dumas novels like The Count of Monte Cristo, Three Musketeers...all of them quoted Arabian Nights as what influenced the creation of the sword and sorcery genre and the writing of their stories.

I would go even further back, the Gilgamesh saga is the oldest fantasy story followed by the Oddesey. Arabian nights were influenced by then.

But yeah, Howard was together with Verne and Doyle the creator of modern fantasy. Conan have influenced western fantasy a lot.

Tolkien based his stories on Norse mythology mainly however with some mix in from the British isles. Conan is based mainly on Irish mythology (Conan is actually mentioned in old stories and is said to killed a Fomori called "Balor of the evil eye" so he can possibly but unlikely be based on a real person).

Actually no, The poem of Gilgamesh, or the Oddesey does not fall into the sword and sorcery genre which Conan is a part of. In fact, no mythology is based in the sword and sorcery genre unless you consider King Arthur to be mythology and not fantasy. Mythology is the genre fantasy is based off of, and S&S is based off of that. Its a new thing.

As for Tolkien, there is no one thing LOTR is based on, he used so many sources and material for inspiration which is why they are some of the greatest novels of the last 100 years...but he himself did list Howard as well as 1000 and 1 Arabian Nights as two of those sources.

No way. Let´s face it, either EA or Activision would get their hands on the IP and make a Wow clone out of it.

At best someone would use the D20 mechanics from the rather sad RPG, WOT is just a system that would be incredible hard to turn into a MMO and I can already smell the failure of it.

I could see a great RTS or turned based strategy game ala "Age of wonder" from it though. But the only MMO company that even got the imagination to try would be Undead labs and possibly CCP and both of them have their hands full right now.

I'm thinking like a 300 mmo would be bad ass. Location is Mediterranean Sea/ surrounding area's.

classes, not sure but something like..

Spartan, priest, assasin, archer. Maybe another "special class". This could be your greeks or something.

then Persians! Immortals! Another form of an archer, don't know about priest type class, but something similar, maybe like a song player or something? Chants more than direct spells? Then a Messenger? (rogue type class) and the bomb throwers!

Then you could have.... Crap who would a third faction be? Arcadians? Hmm might need to re-think this one...

Yeah, but chances are whatever you create based on an existing IP doesn't necessarily make a good game. For example Force being overpowered if the game was loyal to the Star Wars IP.

I'm digging it, the train part makes it awesome. Make it a real sandbox too, where it takes some time to get from point A to point B...

raiding trains with a pack of bandits, those could be a form of raids too! and it would be epic, it's the ultimate PvE/PvP raid, bandits try to take the train, but if civies come in and defend they get rewards!

When does development start?

There are a couple I'd like to see, but mainly I'd really love to have a real good Warhammer Fantasy MMO. Before Mythic took the reigns of the current one I saw some screenshots that got me really excited, but then of course Mythic took over and it all went downhill very rapidly.

Warhammer Fantasy could be so good, with it's dangerous world and deadly combat system, plus all the really unique classes. It would have to be mostly sandbox due to some of the classes trappings, such as the Innkeeper needing an actual Inn. Also it could be semi-perma death with the use of Fate Points. For those who don't know, Fate Points are quite small in number, usually between 1 and 3 depending on your race. When you take a killing blow you can use a fate point and something dramatic will happen that will save your life. Out of fate points? Then you die. However, some adventures can reward fate points, so even if you've lost one or two, you can still gain some back by doing something awesome.

Then of course there's the dark setting, with Vampires, Chaos Cults, Skaven in the sewers, Demons, Necromancy - generally, if it's on the bad side, it's REALLY bad. It could make for one awesome game, but nobody seems to be willing to create the setting as it should be.

The other is of course Shadowrun, which is probably one of my all time favourite settings. Cyberpunk meets Fantasy. It would have to be done completely differently to current MMO's, you couldn't just have a quest giver saying, "Go into Cybertech Industries and steal 5 blueprints.". Hell no, I'd want something amazing for Shadowrun. Plus, I'd love to see it more roleplay focused, which is mainly because I spent a few years on a Shadowrun MUSH which was really an incredible roleplay experience. Not sure if that could even be done, but hey, I can dream.

But he was an expert on Norse mythology and languages. Gandalf is based on Odin but the name is commong from a Dwarf king in Norse mythology and there are loads of other stuff as well.

I have honestly not read the Gilgamesh story but I do know it have fantasy elements, Gilgamesh is looking for immortality and finds it.

I do however have read the Odessey and that one is full of fantasy that could have straight out of a MMO. The battle against the Cyclops, the witch turning his crew to pigs and so on. Ok, the last one might work for the next äMonkey island as well but you get the point.

However the true inventor of sword and Sorcery was Leithner. Conan rarely dabbles into sorcery, magic is evil in Howards books (and based on Lovecrafts novels, Howard was a huge fan). The first heroes that are Sword and sorcery based are Fafhrd and the Grey mouser.

Elric of Menilboné by Michael Moorcock.

A sandbox MMORPG in the Young Kingdoms as described in the Elric novels would rock my socks.

A good sandbox MMORPG based on Lord of the Rings would be nice too, instead of the utter crap Turbine turned LOTRO into.

You could also have player bounties for those who murder and steal. They would be posted in towns and people who go out and kill the outlaw would get a nice reward.

The third faction could be the ones everyone seems to have forgotten about...

The "300" had almost 7000 other greeks with them as well as the Athenian fleet led by the man that thought up the battle plan and actually MADE IT WORK...Themistocles.

He held off the Persian fleet from going behind the land unit and attacking from behind...and he won even though vastly outnumbered and didnt have a small pass to negate his enemies advantage.

But everyone seems to only remember the 300 Spartans...even though over 2000 greeks died with them and worse yet, there were actually around 900 Spartans there...lol...
