This is my second try at EVE. First time i only played about 1 day - 5 years ago and gave it up right away.
Subbed 2 days ago so on my 3rd day. Did the Mining tutorail 1st and had some problems but overall worked thru it without too much trouble. But started the Exploration missions on 2nd day and when i got to using the scan probes just ran into all sorts of problems. Now using scan probes is no problem once you know how to do it right. But here goes as to how it can all go wrong. One of the first things they tell you to do is play with moving a probe around. well that is just the wrong thing to do cause usinng scan probes is all about using 3-5 or even 7 probes together. The proper way to deploy scan probes is to deploy 1 at your location 1st then deploy more and move them around the 1st one -- then move all of them together using shift-left click drag formation. I f you move one first and then deploy more probes and then try to move the probes 1 by one into formation with each other its frustarting and tough. Also, how to center the solar map screen isn't evident at all, sometimes when you click on a probe it centers sometimes it doesn't. I eventually watched the official You Tube Video on using scan probes and noticed that she was able to pull the solar view around the screen so now knew it was possible and just had to figuer it out -- only took a min or so and yep that's it --- right click hold > drag but that's like 6 hours into doing the mission. So i'm deploying probes one at atime and trying to move them into formation and no idea how to get the screen centered to do so. Also I have no idea that I'm suppose to stay in the solar system. The text clearly says to but as far as I know they really mean the zone ( if zone even really applies). At any rate I know i'm doing scans away from the Solar System at some point. I have every expectation that as long as I don't jump thru a gate out of the zone I'm completely safe. Guess what? -- of course I'm not. At some point and at some place, I get jumped by 5 NPC Bandit ships and have my ship blown to pieces -- my first death or what appears to me death. I have no idea what to do or what really happened, so i ask for some rookie help. Eventually get 2 guys to give me private tells, one is new to the game with just days of playing so he cann't really help, other is a vet from before the tutorials and although wanting to be helpful is really just offering ingame money and a ship neither of which i need -- did offer assurance that i wasn't PvPed though. At any rate eventually figure out I'm in my capsule and warp back to the academy and get my other ship, figure out i can buy a new scanner launcher and scan probes at a market 4 jumps away so off i go to get re-equipped ( those were given to me to do the mission at start ). Luckily I had forgotten to put a special item that is needed to get to a tutorial container on my ship so it was still in my inventory at the academy -- and no its not needed to make the scan just used after the successful scan to finish the mission -- no idea if I would even have been able to finish the mission if I hadn't made that mistake -- It would prob have been destroyed along with the ship, then again maybe it would have escaped with the capsule. So, 1 lost ship, buy new equipment for mission, reequip another ship that i got as reward for doing all the mining tutorial missions, And I'm back to starting the mission all over basically. Still no idea how to deploy scan probes properly or how to center the solar system map while moving scan probes around. But I did reread the mission and determine that i really need to stay in the solar system not just the zone. Even then I lose a whole batch of scan probes cause I exceeded their deployment time limit, lost another batch when i logged off the night before -- so back to the market to get another 10 scan probes. Finally decide to watch the YouTube Video -- be aware i did try while ingame but got a message i needed some additional software to use ( apparrently related to haveing EVE running as not needed when EVE is shutdown ). Then takes like 30 mins to do easily, ok 10 mins. So is EVE is easy or hard -- hard to say. Pretty easy if you do right. Pretty brutal if you get off in the wrong direction. |

Originally posted by Tuyet Most of the beginning turorial is actually pretty good, with the exception of the exploring Scanning tutorial which is crap. Make sure to follow the dircetions very carefully or you will go to the wrong place and get attacked by pirates. if it says to go to Lader than go to Lader , same with Rader, gravimetrics and the rest. skill up your Astrometrics to 3. Watch the Eve University Tutorial on Scanning, it is the easiest to understand, Put 6 probes out there at once and run a scan, if your mission is to get a proof of discovery for Gravimentrics then look down the scan screen til you see Gravimetrics, if you do not see it then grab hold of all the probes and move them a bit , keep doing til you see Gravimetric. When you finally see Gravimetric click on it and go to Solar system space you should see a red circle, now start putting the probes around the red circle. leave one in the center of the red circle. run another scan- Look at Gravimetric again and check out signal strength. also you should now see a Yellow little circle- point your mouse at it and you will see it says Gravimetric. put your probes around the circle and put one probe on top of circle and one on bottom, yes you will need to move map around but do it very slowly otherwise it looks combobaled- ok now you have probes around the yellow circle and one on top and one on the bottom. you may have to scan down your probes but you may not.. run a scan again and hopefully you are at 100% signal strength and that means you can warp to destination, you cannot warp to destination until you are at 100%. Watch this on Eve University video scan tutorial as you can see it in action. Yea I was confused as hell trying to move the map around and my probes would dissapear to different parts of the map because it is in 3d , took me 2 hours until I figured out to watch the Eve U tutorial and then it was easy after that-good luck |
