1) He seems to think the scene can hack the game to be playable offline.  That's an absolute joke.  The best they can do is make it easier to connect to a server emulation once they are written.  I don't think he even grasps server/client relationships.

LMAO!  Under what kind of rock have you been living?

They already managed to hack the closed beta client and ran Diablo III on a private server infrastructure.

These hacks are readily available, including private server code to set up your own private server lol!

They are working on the Retail Version Server emulator right now. Won't be long till it will be available.

You really naive to think that making an online only DRM will stop piracy!

If history hasn't learned you anything, then any form of DRM has exactly the total opposite effect! It gives hackers even more reason to hack! As the whole point of being a hacker is the challenge and brag about it, when you managed to crack it!

DRM, like gun and drug laws, or any regulation of that nature, only affects the people who obey the rules. The players affected by DRM wouldn't have pirated in the first place, and the pirates won't be bothered by DRM since they will end up hacking it. It's nonsense, and everyone should be able to see it. I don't know why companies keep doing this.

DRM hurts legitimate customers, which arguably are the ones the DRM is supposed to be 'protecting' only, that isnt really what DRM is about is it... so the pirates in the end get access to a game that works better for them, than the people who actually bought the game .. kind of perverse isnt it, where in order to obtain the best gaming experience, you have to break the law. There are so many issues to take up with on D3.. and i wholly agree with TB on this one, the guy is spot on, and not for the first time imo..

I'd like to thank the OP for the extra views and ad revenue we have received as a result of this thread. Very awesome thing for him to do :)

Also bravo btw, there are some seriously level-headed and sensible people in this thread. Even the majority of those that disagree with my point of view were able to do so without resorting to fallacies and ad hominem. Good job. It's clear that many of you took the time to listen and comprehend my entire opinion on the matter and that's appreciated.

I don't see why you're all so butthurt, he was spot on. If you enjoy the game and are having fun, then good for you, why should you care less if someone doesn't like your beloved game?

XD

Never even knew the dude had an account here. Learn something new every day I suppose.

Wonder if Simon and Lewis do too.

1. For god's sake mmo gamers, enough with the analogies. They're unnecessary and your comparisons are terrible, dissimilar, and illogical.

2. To posters feeling the need to state how f2p really isn't f2p: Players understand the concept. You aren't privy to some secret the rest are missing. You're embarrassing yourself.

3. Yes, Cpt. Obvious, we're not industry experts. Now run along and let the big people use the forums for their purpose.

1) He seems to think the scene can hack the game to be playable offline.  That's an absolute joke.  The best they can do is make it easier to connect to a server emulation once they are written.  I don't think he even grasps server/client relationships.

2) He seems to only care about the game as a single player game.  As such, he doesn't care about item hacking or bnet cheating.  He completely minimizes the benefit of storing all characters on their servers and running most of the code on their servers.  That doesn't mean that

3) He only sees the evils of the RMAH and completely ignores the gold AH.  Ever tried trading items in D2.  the options were to create a game name with the trade you wanted, but if it wasn't elite good luck.  The other popular method was  D2JSP, where one person profited financially and trades were not secure.  You might get a refund from d2jsp if you got scammed, but that's a major hassle.

4)  He's not even a fan of the genre and thus he clearly wasn't a serious online D2 player and doesn't understand the appeal.  Which is why he sees TL2, with an open BNET type of system, and POE which also is online only,as comparable.

If you want a simple single player hack&slash and aren't that interested in the genre, like Total Biscuit, then definitely buy Torchlight 2 for $20.  But don't take his review as being a well informed critique of the genre or the game.

Sorry but I agreed with most every word he said.

Then why do you even play mmorpgs in the first place? 100% of them are online only! Even the solo friendly ones. And don't give me the excuse of RMAHs when we all know that money for item trading was as much a part of D2 as hacking the offline mode was.

Can we stop pretending that Diablo 3 is an MMO now? Never has been, never will be. It's missing the rather crucial "M" from "MMO"

If you're hoping that he (totalbiscuit) will change his mind, you're in for something else. People need to realize and concede when a game is not all that it should be. I completely agree with totabiscuit's assessment of D3 (main reason why I did not buy D3).

First and the foremost response: Do not make a logical mistake at the beginning of your argument. This was clearly stated as an preemptive mailbox show. Because issues related to Diablo 3 will pile up over next days. If you consider it as a review you are already destroying anything you write later on, because it is based upon a logical fallacy.

Because I am not arrogant I will still make time to read the rest and comment on it in a logical fashion.

Originally posted by FrodoFragins 1) He seems to think the scene can hack the game to be playable offline. That's an absolute joke. The best they can do is make it easier to connect to a server emulation once they are written. I don't think he even grasps server/client relationships.

It is beside common respect in an argument to insult somebody by accusing him of something he clearly understands. If I ignore that and continue - Diablo 3 has no precedent. This is why: A) Server / client relationship is not new at all. EA tried it a long time ago. Ubisoft is still trying. But making an single player experience based upon single instance of an mmo cluster is not precedented. B) Scene has rules preventing from cracking services, this is why you will not see warez group making a lan enabling solution and etc. But again this situation has no precedent, because this is most definitely a game with full single player and that is worth while effort for warez groups. But if you are a betting man, which is how are you writing this, then it is safe to say, that there will be no full experience for Diablo 3 in close future. C) By saying that it is gonna be emulated is saying that it can be played offline, since TCP/IP is capable of working solely without other hosts in the network.

Originally posted by FrodoFragins 2) He seems to only care about the game as a single player game. As such, he doesn't care about item hacking or bnet cheating. This is not an review therefore he responded to one of the main issues with Diablo 3 and that it is a Single player game with quite popular coop, that has LAG issues. The reason why World of Warcraft is very poor on combat style is quite apparent even today with diablo 3. As a lvl 40 nightmare player I died during my lifetime 3 times because of AI lag. this makes HC insanely stupid. Do not make assumptions that he ignores other aspects, if he is just responding to one of the issues.

The rest of the arguments are repetitive and based upon same fallacy. Is it clear to see, that you feel offended by his reaction, but your emotions are clearly taking over your rational response. I completly agree that this is not an review and therefore people should take it as a personal opinion of TB, which was clearly stated at the beginning of the show.

Excuse me?... why would I buy Torchlight 2 if I wasn't interested in the genre?

You diss TB for not liking Diablo 3 as much as you do but then go and critique a game that isn't even out yet.

The fact that Torchlight 2 can compare with a game created by the richest company in the business and with such a ridiculous development time, says loads about it :)

I've been playing the T2 beta and I have to say it's amazing.  The classes are fun to play and feature the talent tree system we are all used to.  The graphics are bright and appealing.  The dungeons are varied and random.  The monsters are plentiful and come in many varied types.  The online co-op, which the op seems to ignore is as fun as old school D2.  I think Blizz is really going to have a problem on their hands here.

Jesus, really?  He feels empathy for mature adults who called in sick from work to stay at home to play a video game?  This is just a mere sample of the sensationalist bandwagon jumping nonsense he hops on every now and again that I can only assume is a mad grab for channel views.  It really goes to show you what an absolute fool the man is.

How do you know they called in sick? What if they took a vacation? Why is it more accetable to take a vacation to go play golf? Or skydive? The fact is they took time off to spend on their hobby. In what universe is that wrong? People have been doing that for years, but now it's suddenly not okay? Sensationalist bandwagon? HOW? The irony of this post, astonishing.

Ditto.  Totally.

Im not the biggest fan of TotalBiscuit and he has gotten on my nerves a few times, but he's hit the nail on the head.   He basically just got done saying everything and more, that Ive been saying here for the last two days.

Also OP.....  If they can emulate a WoW server, or any mmo they care too, I cant find a reason in the world hackers will not emulate Diablo 3.  Its very likely to happen.  Would probably take 6 months to a year but I expect it to happen.

Where did I say they couldn't emulate D3?  They definitely will in the next 6-9 months.  But I'm pretty sure it's not "the scene" that does that. He implied the scene could hack the disk and somehow find a server in there.  Totally ludicrous and ignorant.

You're just speculating and putting words into his mouth. He never said that. It's not his fualt you think that, that's on you.

Never under esitmate the ability of crackers to make this game off line. This was a iditoic desperate move by Blizzard to make a single player game into a online game.

Diablo 4 the MMO now with a $15 sub fee per month. You guys are sheep.

When the scene crack this, it'll be a sorry state of affairs, seeing as at times, pirates will be able to play the game, when those that bought it, cannot.
