"Unfortunately, the combat system won’t be real-time due to latency issues and will be based around a stamina bar which you can use to sprint, block, interrupt, and break incapacitating effects. Blocking is the primary focus of these abilities, and can do things like stopping the secondary effects of attacks such as an ice spell slowing you. Stamina management (and wearing down your enemy’s stamina) is important, as your crowd control abilities might be on a long cooldown, and if you use them before the enemy player runs out of stamina, they will probably just block the effect. Long story short, ZeniMax feels that having the stamina bar will help break down the Holy Trinity as stamina allows you to do things like tank."

 

I can't conceptualize this bit. Are we talking about pausing during combat? How does this work in an MMO world?

 

Are we talking about a text based system?

 

I mean.. you can't have combat between parties in an open world, shared LIVE, with thousands of players and pause it..

 

How does one create combat in an MMO that doesn't play out in real time?

I'm not sure where the OP and Tco get their supposed info but neither the main site or Gameinformer listed any of that quoted information. And to be quite honest anything said or shown at this point in the developement should be taken with a grain of salt as any gamer who has played more than a couple mmo's should already know.

Im honestly ready to cry. WHY DO THEY KEEP DOING THIS?!?!? Why do big devs keep insisting on making WoW clones? I guess all our hopes lie with AA and small indie mmos like, Embers of Caerus and Life is Feudal. They have a year if its still 2013 so they really dont have much time to change it unless they wanna push it back a year or so.

its too early to figure how the game will be implemented.. but people should at least trust a bit on Bethesda.. after all they been giving us dreams for years and years now.. and as far as i know they havent been sold to the devil yet like Bioware and other companies did.

Lets keep the fingers crossed and hope for the best.. even if it is the same engine used in Rift and Swtor.

Maybe it was cynical of me (or perhaps, in the light of the current news me being realistic) but I figured this the moment they saw it... My GF asked me why I weren't thrilled about the announcement since I love the TES series, "Because it'll be nothing like TES," I replied, "And because this will only harm the IP and companies involved.".

Making an MMO that follows the standard formula and slapping the TES tag on it is a Bad Idea. In fact, it's not even TES and is even a Horrible idea. Usually I'm open to new MMOs and willing to give them a chance, but this... This just wants to make me cry in a corner. :(

I can't figure out why make an MMO with every feature removed that makes the Elder Scrolls unique and just keep the name is something you would want to play. 

After reading the article on what was not going to be ingame, I had no desire to play the game.  If anything, the article pushed me away from wanting to play it.

Going by the leaked information, I find it rather funny that the devs themselves stated that they're aiming to produce the best MMO, worthy of the Elder Scrolls name, but then proceeded to give reasons as to why some features wouldn't make it due to the "difficulty" of its implementation, despite the fact that some of these features are already present in other MMOs. I don't get it. =/

I don't know about you guys, but I enjoy the Elder Scrolls for the open, non-linear world. Nothing we know impacts that, so far.

I couldn't care less about the pace of combat (the combat described, like most MMO combat, is real-time, by the way—this journalist doesn't understand the term), werewolves/vampires, flying mounts, marriage, dragons, class-based skills, or ‘raids’.

Lack of player housing is a bummer, I guess.

The real mystery is, how could this possibly come as a surprise to anyone?

Making an ES MMO with the same features as the offline games, that's IMPOSSIBLE. So they HAVE TO make a different kind of game.

I'm guessing that this will become one of the most hyped games ever on this site, and when released, it will be one of the worst failures.

I've said this a few times before: I love the ES series, but a MMO version simply won't work, and I think that even trying is a horrible idea.

Who's to say none of these features will be added in future updates of expansions?

You cannot turn a theme park into a sandbox.

Maybe but it can be turned into a hybrid. Sandbox don't lead the box sales and i don't blame devs for avoiding this niche genre.

Theif, mage, fighter guilds & dark brotherhood to join feature of both games
Star sign stones - feature of both games
Blocking / sprinting & stamina bar in combat - feature of both games
Soul stones and enchanting - feature of both games
Huge world - feature of both games

Yeah they threw out everything from tes Mr hyperbole

Asherons Call was the last MMORPG to go classless and it wasnt really classless.

Just allowed you to mix and match anything and everything with a limited amount of points to spend on your choices. So you could wield a sword and still cast spells but you couldnt train everything and thus could gimp yourself. That kind of game wont be made again, too many MMO players cry fowl when they have to think and plan.

Actually, Mabinogi (which was released in 2003-2004) is more or less classless. The only skill restrictions are race based, other than that, you can put points into anything you want. Eventually you'd be able to max out most of the skills as there isn't really a level cap and you can rebirth weekly, which resets your current level (but not your skills or overall level) back to 0. I reached level 1,100ish which was decent, but nothing compared to the more elite players. You can certainly gimp yourself early on if you spread your skills too thin.

Anyways, I find a classless system to be more enjoyable. Unfortunately, most developers don't seem to think so. At least The Secret World appears to be going this route.

That would be my one complaint with TESO from what we know so far - classes, but having said that classes were in Morrowind and oblivion, you just had option to make your own template at the start. People are used to classless with skyrim though. I don't think the tes system would work in a mmo though, as witnessed by afk swimmers in darkfall. A system more like eve or the secret world would have been a better fit than hard classes, with added benefit of easier pvp balance.

The other complaints - no action combat. People have tried it, darkfall, mortal online - buggy as hell, planetside - ahead of its time and laggy, tera - ughh animation locks. Planetside 2 will probably be the first mmo to get action combat in mmos right. The TESO combat described doesn't sound like wow style, it sounds like tab Target +, it sounds like gw2 and tsw combat.

No ffa pvp. THERE IS NO PVP IN TES, so whatever pvp they put in is new and an addition. Now there's 3 models of pvp in general, eve style guild on guild with different security levels in different areas, daoc style contested territory with 3 factions, or wow style grind tupperware boxes for tokens. Maybe eve style would have been a better fit, but thank fuck they didn't go with option 3.

It uses the hero engine, therefore its a bunch of corridors and on the rails just like swtor. Swtor is like that because bioware WANTED it to be like that. What little we know if TESO suggests it is not like that, no quest hubs, wander off and automatically get quests, random events happening between npcs, open dungeons etc.. sounds more like EQ and gw2 than swtor to me

Then there's the things we don't know like crafting. We do know there are soul gems, we do know crafting was important in uo & daoc which are the games the devs worked on previously, we do know crafting is a big thing in tes, so I would be very very surprised if the game had wow crafting.
