It is perfectly normal to feel protective about "human child"-like creatures and that can translate into wanting them to wear proper cloths.

A poor attempt at sarcasm my friend. I agree it's kinda creepy. But this is an acceptable "art form" in many countries. Just don't dress your young daughter like this in public. Then it's serious business.

and no one complained about goblins and gnomes in many games. or is it only the pretty (edit) shorties who count? getting obsessed over sex in games is a bit ridiculous. what kind of gamer faps while fragging? i'd guess only someone playing a game by blizzard so they've got something to do with the extra hand they no longer need to play... (ba-boom tish)

in any case, getting rid of blood effects is something that does sadden the old gamer in me. and i don't think it's too much to ask for a slider or button to turn them off or on. some of us like it splashy. it's fun. the continual babying down of games is a bit silly.

If it was a part of an art gallery, I wouldn't mind and I would be able to swallow the "artistic freedom" approach, but this is a commercial MMORPG with oversexification of their regular adult-looking female characters, so in my eyes they lost that privilege.

I don't think you understand what censorship is. This isn't a government forcing them to change their content, Frogster made that decision themselves to enlarge their market. You can argue that the ratings board is a government agency, but its sole reason for existence is to accurately describe content so parents can make informed purchasing decisions and keep more adult content out of the hands of children. They can't force Frogster to change anything, they can't prevent Frogster from bringing a product to market; all they can do is label it.

This is all about money, and Frogster determined that the sales lost from reducing blood, nudity, or whatever they're removing will be eclipsed by the number of sales they gain from a larger pool of potential customers. It's not a conspiracy or totalitarianism, it's just plain old business.

Parents have different opinions about what is and is not adult content. Parents should be responsible and decide what is OK or not. Its a mistake to trust some agency. Why would it be able to accurately describe content?

And they have power and an agenda. Because it will ruin a game and possibly a company if a game that was intended for 12 or 15 YO gets a mature rating. Some retailers would even refuse to sell the game. And the target audience would be smaller.  What if the company and some parents have a different opinion and think the game is OK as it is? And not bad for 12/15 YO kids.... Or perhaps sometimes the agency think a game is OK for a 15 YO but some parents with other moral ideas think its not.

Personally I dont think its a good idea to allow some agency to make decisions that really parents should make. So I cant agree its just business. If you believe the individual and in this case parents should be more responsible its not good. I dont think the state or some agency should interfere. This is about both economical and moral power.

Great post! I agree 100%.

Still not censorship but still great post.

You know why such agencys exists? Two reasons: Bad Parents and lawers.

Thanks! I can agree bad parents and lawyers are part of the problem. But the agency is also political. At least, IMO, there is no way some agency can be fully neutral. Its decisions will be based on what different political, religious and moralist groups represented in and by the agency represents. Parents dont have to follow or trust the ratings. But often they will do that without thinking and without examining the game or movie. A company can perhaps ignore it and release a unrated game. But it could ruin the company and the game. It is a type of borderline censorship.

i find people who use words like "oversexification" are deeply disturbed and need to see a psychiatrist immediately to resolve those issues.

they remind me of those tv priests who say "pornography is bad" and then turns out they've got a few external hard drives filled with the stuff. personally, if you're looking at a game avatar in that way to begin with, i think you're the one with the problem. not the game. regardless of what you think is there, the game is attempting to be "cute" to appeal to an asian market. not trying to be sordid, sleazy and revolting in the manner of your mind, sir.

i'd hate to see the contents of YOUR hard drive...

I'm as old as shit. /wistful music starts

I remember back in Nineteen Hundred and Eighty-Six Congress released the Meese Report. The jist of it was "We can't define pornograpy but we know it when we see it". Great time to be a teenager in the '80s. AIDS, Just say no, hair bands. Good times.

What do you call it when you notice that a game intentionally dresses their adult women in a such way that it is supposed to cause arousal among their teenage hormone-driven male players? I will make it clear that when I am refering to "adult women" I am not refering to the Elin race.

Sex sells and it is used very often as a marketing technique, specially when the target demographic includes teenage males. It is my opinion that when you use "sex sells" marketing techniques, you have no longer the privilige to use "artistic freedom" as argument. I will remind you, yet again, that when I write "sex sells" I am not talking about the Elin race.

I have no beef with you unlike Headphones apparently does so I'll be nice.

Playboy is considered "art". Playboy is not in an art gallery. Video games are considered "art" (I know). Also not in said gallery.

BTW I thought your concern was the Elin? That is what you posted a picture of. I am confused now.

Talk about pot calling the kettle black. Calling someone disturbed when you think it's 'cute' for what looks like a 12 year old girl to be wearing a tiny love heart thong. Pictures like that leave nothing to the imagination, but I realise Asians are into that creepy shit.

Maybe you need some issues resolved.

If it was a part of an art gallery, I wouldn't mind and I would be able to swallow the "artistic freedom" approach, but this is a commercial MMORPG with oversexification of their regular adult-looking female characters, so in my eyes they lost that privilege.

i find people who use words like "oversexification" are deeply disturbed and need to see a psychiatrist immediately to resolve those issues.

I will remind you, yet again, that when I write "sex sells" I am not talking about the Elin race.

sex sells the box. but i gotta tell you, i don't run around in a game going, "ooh, there's a guy playing an elf. i wanna hump that."

you're a sick kind of guy, i think. i certainly wouldn't leave my kids with you if that's how your mind works.

actually, guy. i think you'll find us westerners hold the monopoly on sick. we're the ones who can't even look at a computer game without thinking about sex. we're the ones allergic to the word "cute" because we think that translates into "must molest that".

my wife's a huge anime fan (i'm not). the amount of "cute" she collects is mind-boggling. i don't think she's spending her days thinking what you're thinking when you look at it.

so i'll kind of say it again: you're disturbed if you can't look at a game avatar without judging it for sexual appeal.

I think the post I wrote shortly after the one you quoted explains my standpoint better. Basically, in my opinion, once you start using certain marketing techniques you lose the privilige to use "artistic freedom" as motivation for some of your choices; "sex sells" technique is one such. Which is why, in my opinion, since Tera uses "sex sells" in connection with their non-elin females, they lost the right to use "artistic freedom" argument for Elin.

If you are a heterosexual teenage hormone-driven male, you will likely feel arousal and attraction when you see a scantily dressed symmetrical human-like females with certain "adult" characteristics. It is perfectly normal and companies know this and use it as a marketing technique. So no, by all means, do not let your kids play as those females when you are sure there are teenage straight males playing with them.

But is sex really that dangerous? And if you think it is...it will be easy for those teenage boys to find content on the internet that is much much worse. And perhaps men are also fit and muscular and dressed to appear sexy. From a womans POV... I mean its stereoptyped. Perfect men and women that are flawless, fit and sexy. Of course based on the artists or developers idea about ideal men and women.  But if the game developer wants men and women to look like that its up to them.... People that feel offended dont have to play.
