GW2 is larger, more dynamic and a steampunk fantasy setting.

I think TSW will have the same issue as AoC since it have the same engine: Smalll zones and not enough updates. But it is a rather different game and look fun.

I have pre ordered GW2 myself and while try TSW out in the open beta. I could actually see myself playing both if they are good enough but GW2 look more like my kind of game.

I was going to say something like this. I'd wait until both games are no longer under NDA when you can clearly see what you are getting. I am also watching both games, but I will buy neither until all my own questions have been answered to my satisfaction.

It's the sad state of the genre. The next big title has as many threads discussing issues with it's business model than issues with the game itself.

Don't think you will have to decide between the two.

Well, if TSW makes their release date that is. It's Funcom so it's a pretty big IF.

Gw2 and Secret World are the 2 games i'm most looking foward to. Like you, money isnt a problem so i pre purchased both and will play both. At that point, i'll be paying 15 a month to play 2 mmos. Later on down the road, i'll ditch whichever isnt cutting it. i tend to really get into an mmo, and would find it hard to devote time to 2 mmos.

 Points to consider...

   1) you pay for the box upfont with both games. gw2 is 0 a month after that.TSW is 15

   2) TSW has 3 factions, gw2 is factionless. This may or may not affect how PvP plays out.

   3) GW2 is the same tired (IMO) fantasy themed based. TSW is trying to bring something unique

   4) Not much is known about lore or story of either game. TSW seems to have a more compelling potential for story though (IMO)

   5) In PvE, TSW is more of a thinkiing mans game. Some quests will require puzzle solving. Gw2 is find the dynamic events, then jump in and kill stuff

   6) Both games have completely different approaches to skills and progression. I'm not going to get into it here. you should research it yourself

People chose which MMO to play?

I play all major titles, so I'll be buying GW2, TSW, Tera and who knows what else.

One day I might actually get lucky and find one I like for more than 3 months.

Dont buy into the "Funcom sucks" nonsense. Funcom has made fun, compelling mmo titles that have stood the test of time.

Try either game with an unbiased point of view and take it for face value and ask yourself :

"is it fun and do i want to keep playing"

I liked MMOs better when gamers didn't play them, and just geeks did.

A little background on me

I quite (i will not speak it's name but i think we all know what I'm talking about) about a year ago and ever sinse then followed swtor, I played rift for about a month after it was released, however I dont like reading quest text so i ended up playing it as an extremely grindy game which I got sick of very quickly and quit at about level 25. Then I stuck around and am ccurrently playing tor which is okay but well below expectations. I enjoy levelling in it alot more than in rift or wow because I am actually really interested in the story, story is a recent addition to crrent mmos, which I believe both the secret world and guild wars 2 are trying to do really well? I also love a really imersive fun game which you get captivated in and just want to keep playing, tor has really done this I believe (although this may have been because of the story) However I am growing sick of swtor as there isn't much to do at end game (or content altogether) and you end up doing the same thing over and over (i dont mind end game grind but tor takes end game grind to the extreme and makes it boring). I am also sick of the boring wow style combat and wish for something a bit more exciting ( although nothing too extreme, i like combos and stuff but i played dcuo for a bit and couldnt stand how intense the combos and the clicky attackness was, I like to have skill bars with abilities which i press but i would like a game with a more dynamic way in which those abilities work).

I also generally play mmos as a tank and very rarely pvp (i am far more into pve)

So what is this thread really about

I am planning on quitting tor and am currently deciding whether to go for guild wars 2 or the secret world. What I would like people to do is read the brief paragraph about me ad mmos and try to get a bit of a idea of what I want and then give advice as to which title you believe would be best suited for me. Please add a bit of reason, and it may not be why its better for me, it may just be that this game is a better bet for anyone because...

I'm interested to see what people say and I sincerely hope some people can help me make my mind up.

Thanks

Ps

The fact that guild wars 2 is free to play adds nothing to my decision as to which title to pick as being a good game trumps money in all situations and i am not short on money.

So much to consider, where to begin?  Im a fellow PvEer as well :-)

First question is are you more into fantasy or modern?  Because both games are opposed in terms of theme.  I personally like fantasy over modern.

I just quit SWTOR to, made it to Jedi lvl 28 and couldnt stand how linear it was, though the story was good and interesting the gameplay didnt make it immersive for me.

I am also tired of the 'trinity' and limitation it imposes for groups and dungeons.  So seeing how Im not too interested in TSW (others will probably cover this game in a bit more detail), but willing to try it -- I'll tell you why Im excited about GW2 coming from a perspective somewhat similiar to yours...

No grouping! (technically believe there is a way to group the way we know it but havent played to understand its mechanic).  My point is you can at least run into a Dynamic Event and defeat enemies with others without ever having to accept and invite.

Personal story.  As part of the character creation process you get to answer (simple) questions about your playstyle.  Again I dont know how it exactly affects your game time but is a nice touch to personalize your character and develop a theme for your adventure in the game.

(more) voice.  SWTOR nailed this.  Reading quest text is dead to me. It worked when it was created, but doesnt deserve to be in a 2012 game.  GW2 will probably have text to read, but at least they added a bit more voice (w/o cinematics).  I always wondered why you couldnt have someone SAY the text like a narration instead of focusing on a cinematic Voice Over.  It keeps the immersion of the game going.

Sandboxy type elements.  Completely missing in SWTOR imo.  But its nice that you can water plants and see them grow as well as (finally) getting back to seeing effects of an event.  If enemies attack an irrigation machine.  They can turn off the water, which would mean the animals do not eat, which in turn means no supplies for vendors.  I like the causation again maintaining immersion.  Ill admit I havent seen this for myself and dont know how well it works, but again its an attempt that I warmly welcome (in any iteration).

The monsters.  Im dont think we can even call them mobs.  No longer are they just standing around and we kill them because they are there. Its a bit more realistic.  But my real point here was some of the boss monsters.  One that stood out was this huge Purple dragon, and I mean HUGE.  His entrance from the sky was EPIC.  The ground shook when he landed and to see a mass of characters run in to attack (again without accepting or looking for group/raid) was amazing.  I got excited and this was only video.  And it wasnt just a cinematic - this was in-game gameplay.  Impressive to say the least.

Dungeons.  Something like 8 dungeons with 4 modes (Story, and 3 explorable each).  Have to do story to open up explorable (or as it looked like to me - repeatable).  What makes me want to run over and over is the advent of Dynamic events int he dungeon and the ability to collect Karma - which I can trade for new gear.  Just the idea you dont have to grind a dungeon over and over for a gear set is great, especially for us PvE'ers.

PvP.  I thought I would never do this.  But realized I disliked PVP because of the whole gear grind and the fact I probably wouldnt know how to get the ultra-leet gear necessary to compete.  GW2 says gear doesnt matter, making PVP more about your character build and skillset.  Thats something interesting as well as a new challenge that I will pick up... for the first time.

I actually could go on.. but feel I have made my point and that is...

For a fantasy themed game, Guild Wars 2 seriously invested in trying to break the 'WOW-clone' mode as well as the 'trinity' mechanic.  Its commendable, impressive, and at its worst is better than anything I have played recently and updates anything I've enjoyed in the past.

I don't believe there is enough information yet to make an educated selection. It would just be a gamble. Not that there is anything wrong with that for some players. Myself included .

TSW is the only themepark style game im looking forward to this year and to top it of its from a company that has made 2 of the best MMORPGs to date :) Saying that im still not 100% sure if it should pre-order or jsut wait for the game to come out adn ten decide.. Need to see more first i guess :)

You forgot TSW saying:

We are very excited about introducing an in-game store already from launch. Being able to integrate the store into the actual design of the game pre-launch gives us opportunities you do not normally get when introducing a store after you have launched a game.

We will be revealing more information about the store at a later date, but what we can say for now is that it will focus mostly on convenience item and character customization items such as clothing - of which The Secret World will offer a ton of variety!

So you have a sub fee and a cash shop, just FYI.

I'd like to tack on a few clarifying statements:

1) yep

2) not quite, outside of PvP it is factionless. In WvWvW, it is 3 servers competing for territory and resources over a two week period. So it does create what one could consider factions.

3) Subjective

4) Subjective, but I'm a huge fan of H.P. Lovecraft

5) As far as I know, TSW will have in-game and perhaps out of game puzzles. I think initially these will be interesting but how long until people alt-tab to just google answers. GW2 has more "action oriented" puzzles (e.g. jumping puzzles) and in some dungeons you have do use the environment to activate things (e.g. put boulder on pressure pad, put sword you picked up in statue's hand). Additionally, almost all dynamic events have multiple ways to contribute to success conditions, which can include killing mobs. I guess it depends on what you prefer.

6) yep

Looking forward to both, though I've seen much more beta content than TSW. I've watched everything I could find on both.

Funcom is a mixed bag at least for me. On one side, they have had REALLY bad experience with MMO launches, at least in AoC (the one I experienced, the AO one I wasn't there at release) the biggest problem (IMHO) wasn't so much the bugs, I don't expect an MMO these days to be released bug free (though we should expect them to be relatively stable). The biggest problem I had with them was the huge content gaps, it was a heavily quest based game with several big content gaps where you had nothign to do but grind to get a few levels and find some quests available again, and the general "nothing is wrong, some people aren't having that problem" attitude of the support staff and when it came to content advertised on the box that just wasn't working at all, and some (drunken brawling, for example) that was just never implemented. The first 20 levels were some of the best in MMOs at the time (and I'd say one of the best starting areas even today)... but after that, the game just wasn't finished at all.

On the other hand, though, one thing that Funcom does really well is stand up for their games. I tried AoC few years later when it went F2P, and was VERY pleasantly surprised. The game did a full 180, was stable and very fun. Bugs were mostly gone, mechanic tweaked and overall I'd consider it one of the best themepark MMOs today. There's also AO, a 10 years old game, ancient by online standards, and yet still being actively developed, and they're even updating the graphics engine to more modern graphics.

So, basically, what can you expect of funcom based only on previous experience?... horrible launch, buggy and incomplete, followed by a very active developing team that will fix the game and add more content in the few months after launch. Hopefully they learnt their lesson from AoC, though, and release the game actually ready for release. There's a big chance the game will be nowhere as buggy as AoC was at launch, though, since they're using a tried and tested engine this time.

One thing is for sure... both are the most anticipated games coming this year (I'd say the other big anticipated title would be Archeage, but doesn't seem to be coming out this year)... and both are known to be trying at least something different (GW2 with the not fixed trinity gameplay and dynamic events instead of quests, TSW with the classless, levelless design), so if either or both are big successes, I bet we'll see more interesting things to come in the MMO world in the future.

What can men do against such reckless hate?

He didnt mean one has a cash shop and one doesnt.

Amusing that you seem biased towards GW2, yet you wound up plugging TSW :p lol

Both of course. What a silly question.

That's what I was thinking as well :) Honestly I think both titles have the potential to be great.

Why do I write, create, fantasize, dream and daydream about other worlds? Because I hate what humanity does with this one.

BOYCOTTING EA / ORIGIN going forward.

I have played TSW. I have not played GW2 but there is enough footage to make this comparrison. You will probably find yourself disappointed in TSW as a PVE game.. its very lacking. The quests have little direction and most ofter update randomly without you knowing why. The writing in the game is very... hmm how to put it... bland? ends up being a lot like a B movie.. poor acting. Also do not expect TSW to be a finished product in June.. its FAR from ready in its current state.

GW2 is a far better PVE game for many many more reasons including story, ghraphics, gameplay ect

Well I have been watching TSW for a while now and I had no plans to play GW2. Since the information that has been release along with videos, don't forget the changes in TSW the last year, I have decide to play GW2 over TSW. Probably won't even buy TSW after seeing the gameplay videos.
