As you wish. They are not oh so poor as they would like you to think, that they would need to fund future development of the game with a cash shop, as you can see they're just fine if they can give their employees a bonus. "Need cash shop for moeny to fund future updates" is such a blatant lie, how were Guild Wars 1 updates made? What about the cost of the game and the cost of the DLC/expansion. If your game was a success, you got the money from the sales to make future games. That's how it's always been. Now we have the cash shop/dlc era where devs try to cheat you out of crap on the CD. I guess since it's an online game, crap on the disc is OK to sell back to you.

Xth problem, the game costs $60, the expansions/dlc cost you. How many cash shop games have you seen charge you for a box, and then have a cash shop? There's not even a proclaimation of free content updates like in GW1, which by the way were not signifigant content updates. I don't support their lie of a need for a cash shop, just for them to go and not add free content updates like cash shop games do. Then have them charge us for DLC or the expansion. If the cash shop is there to support the cost of updates, as the lie goes, then why do we have to pay again for the updates?

GW1 did not have a cash shop, and players expected GW2 to be the same way. They can lie about it having a cash shop, but all they did was put it in after the game died, when no one was looking and shouted "Guild Wars 1 had a cash shop!".

Remember, these are the people who were seen as movers and shakers in the online game industry for making an online game with no subscription fee. They got a taste of the money and now have gone to the alternative to subs, aka microtransactions. GW one was all about the no sub thing, and they perverted it. The people who proved games didn't need a sub to be online, went against what made them famous.

Except that GW1 does have a cash shop. Things like skill packs, storage slots, cosmetic changes, name changes, pvp pack, costumes, the menagerie of pets, etc. That was on top of the cost of the original game and each expansion pack.

Here's the true bottom line. ANet is a company who is out to make a profit, companies are allowed to do that, it's called business. With the purchase of the box, we have 80 levels of content in a pve setting, additionally we have our personal story quest lines in pve, pvp content in various forms, and a number of instanced dungeons. I remember reading there is 1500+ dynamic events in the game (iirc). That is a large amount of bang for the buck, as far as we can tell of course. Anything additional is going to be extra. I am certain they will sell costumes, name changes, races changes, profession changes, storage, and DLC mission packs. As long as it doesn't give a distinct advantage over people who don't choose to pay, then who cares? It doesn't truly affect you.

GW2 is a game I would be willing to pay a sub for, and if I wind up spending $15 per month on optional content like costumes and pets, well it's my money and I am just replacing a sub fee. The truth is, that I probably won't spend $15 per month, and that I will come out ahead in terms of content vs. cost.

P.S. Unless you have direct access to their books, you have no idea what they need funding for. You have no idea if they recoup costs through box sales, but, like I said before, they are allowed to make a profit...it's called business.

Could it be that ArenaNet employees have been asked to work overtime? the 30 doc they made a while back had O'brian say that they didnt have them work overtime, but maybe they have went above and beyond in some cases.

secondly, I think a lot of companies, when buying in bulk pay a lot less for things. you get discounts for sure if you buy dell monitors, iphones or ipads.

I don't think it's a big deal at all.

Because working hard on a game for the past several years doesnt warrent any type of bonus. These threads are getting out of hand and are just silly now.

[Mod Edit]

As for the second part, they deserve a bonus. Just don't squeeze the players to make up for their fun time expenses. I payed $60. That's more than a Free to play game ever gets. Don't add a F2P cash shop unless the game is free.

Guess what. you never ever have to buy anything from the CS to get the full experiance from the game that $60 will get you.

The small amount of this game that I have played at conventions is amazing and I plan on supporting Anet buy getting the CE edition, but as of right now there is nothing in the cash shop that I have seen that is worth buying or creates an advantage over me should someone else decide to buy.

The only thing I can gather is that the OP is posting with limited life/job experience. I personally get a somewhere between $500 to a $1K per year at our chrismas parties. (Depending on sales that year.)

It's very common in the business world, you know, bonuses and such... /woosh

Costs of Ipads at launch: ~$500. Multiply that by 200 for a too fair estimate and you got 100k. They don't seem like the poor victims, millions of players are giving them $60 a box now are they? They shouldn't have before.

http://www.arena.net/blog/join-the-club-arenanet-coder-launches-sketch-club-app is the official blog, which says it.

Oh poor Anet, whatever will they do when they develop an expansion and charge us $50 for it? How will they pay for future development? Ignore the profit they just made from the box sales of course, the devil known as the players take that while Arenanet sits in rags.

Modern games give WAYYY more profit than their SNES counterparts. More players, gaming is mainstream now. Hey, even the developers get to act like celebrities now instead of programing the game, see Arenanet. In the old days, we didn't have developers doing that, they got magazine interviews rarely and more of a preview/review of the GAME. No flying all over the country, to Europe and Korea.

Posts like this make me want to stop coming here.

Wouldn't it be nice to have a place to come to that is helpful and full of useful information? Sometimes it just boggles the mind on how the thought process of some of these posters works.

I guess if someone has the right to post something like this - then I have the right to post how stupid it is.

Ugh, I miss the old days of meaningful conversations.

And another thing - Anyone who says "I really want to like this game" for any game is an idiot.. If you like something you like it. If you don like it - you don't like it.  What a stupid thing to say....

Ok enough.... :)

Of course big businesses give bonuses at Christmas. Some give hampers of food and drink, others give cash or other items. Maybe some scrooge bosses give you nothing. An ipad? Really. Sports Direct here in the UK shared £88million between it's 2,200 permanent staff last Christmas with an average bonus of £43,000. That's about $67,000. I shop at Sports Direct. I'm not complaining because I didn't get a free tshirt or a pair of Reebok's as a thank you. I think it's super cool for the staff though!

I think it's cool that Anet did this for their employees. As for the op I think it's grasping at straws.

I wish we had a Sports Direct in Canada that sold things at the same price they do there.

Been to the UK a few times and I make sure I stock up on shirts while I'm there.. I have about 20 in my closet. Great place to get stuff.

Definately. And to be honest, I feel a LOT better shopping there knowing how well they treat their staff from manager to stock girl/boy. Honestly a great company.

*sorry if I derailed the thread but I do think a business which cares for it's staff is to be commended*

I read "I hate everyone for having an iPad. Goddammit, I want one too! Give me one, now!"

And "People shouldn't make profit of making good games. Damn, I hate GW1 and all it's chapters, everyone should stop buying ANet's games so they cannot buy *insertvaluableproduct* soon!"

I am glad they're doing fine over there and have a very small bonus. 500$ isn't that much for a christmas bonus. At least in Europe.

GW2 is a game I would be willing to pay a sub

You would pay a sub for a game with no updates?

P.S. Unless you have direct access to their books, you have no idea what they need funding for. You have no idea if they recoup costs through box sales, but, like I said before, they are allowed to make a profit...it's called business.

Thanks for the sweet postscript my dear, but everyone does. NCSoft publishes their financial information on their website and you can listen to their shareholder meeting all without logging in or even owning a share in the company.

And who says they're not allowed to make a profit? I just happen to be from the pre-cash shop and pre - company boot licker era. They're pushing for money money to be drawn from the consumer and forumers (Not gamers) are nodding their heads. Once again, the game costs $60 and there's a cash shop..... why?

Basis of argument yet again:

Free to play game: $0 to play + cash shop. Content updates ARE free.

Guild Wars 2: $60 to play + cash shop. Content updates are NOT free.

Because the first Guild Wars never got updated right? Guild Wars one has always had a cash shop.

And why would they add a cash shop to the game after it died if they weren't making money off them in the first place? You're post isn't coherant at all.

Guild Wars 2: $60 to play + cash shop. Content updates are NOT free.

I... You... No... Just no....

F2P usually has pay-to-win items, ala Battlefield 4free. Guild Wars has never had pay to win items. Both pay to win and buy to play have an optional cash shop, only difference is the pay-to-win cash shop coerces you into buying stuff if you don't want to suck

MMOs played: WoW, Star Wars Galaxies, Star Wars: The Old Republic, Guild Wars, Planetside, Global Agenda, Star Trek Online, RIFT, Everquest 2, Age of Conan, Warhammer Online, EvE online, APB
Best MMO Companies: Trion Worlds, ArenaNet, CCP
Worst MMO Companies: Electronic Arts

I can point you to multiple F2P games that have less pay-to-win cash shop that GW2 screens from it;s cash shop showed.

I am glad they're doing fine over there and have a very small bonus. 500$ isn't that much for a christmas bonus. At least in Europe.

This.
