Demon's Souls and Dark Souls..

Outside of these two games everything is cake.

Well if you need to over power/gear a games content to progress, then i would say that this would make the game hard if you did not use the over power/gearing option of progression. To me the reason for this is that the encounter is either too hard to beat normally, or if tedious to do, and so using the option of over gearing/powering the encounter would be like using a cheat or such thing to gain an advantage over the content. Yet also finding some of the ways to gain endings in games that were hidden, or finding secluded/hidden spots, even beating some of the optional bosses that were created to be unable to be out powered/geared/leveled in the game. Many games lke suikoden series, shining force, phasntasy star, and such can be very difficult to win if you try to eithher beat the game at the correct levels for encounters, or at a level below the recomended for those. Also they're no real games in any genre that are trully hard, and which can not have that diffculty subverted in ways either thru cheats, programs, or even guides.

It's been ages, but Neverwinter Nights is one where I felt a challenge.  Like actually having to read the book to play it.

Bioware... Funny in retrospect.

Haven't played them myself, so honsetly don't know the answer to that question.  Everything I've heard about the game makes it sound more like an action hack-and-slash with light RPG elements rather than a true RPG though.

well is a true RPG?   The souls games have stat points that you distribute through over ten options plus at least a hundred different weapons, and many different options for character development.  It's got as much advancement options as any other RPG i've played, a hell of a lot more than any Final Fantasy type games or games where you have to pick a character class.  If action combat means it isn't a true rpg then I don't know what to say to that.

Creating a character/identity, dealing with choice and consequence, the ability to alter the story/plot through actions you make in game...  Though that's just my opinion.  Being hack-and-slash shouldn't preclude any of that.

Icewind Dale, on the setting which was closest to AD&D 2.0 rules (not even the hardest one) will kick your ass, even if you are familiar with the ruleset. All it takes is a badly aimed spell or two, or a couple of lucky die rolls by the monsters to send you directly to the 'load game' screen.

NWN had a couple of moments, but I never found it to be all that challenging. Admittedly, at that time in my life I could probably quote the entire 3rd Edition rulebook AND all the supplementary literature available, so I knew exactly how to build each class for maximum effectiveness. Plus the ruleset as a whole is a bit easier to understand than 2.0, as well as more forgiving.

I'm pissed at 3am after a friday evening with the neighbours so I'm gonna admit something really bad.

Company of Heroes... ok not an RPG but there's a level on there that I just can't complete, even on easy mode lol.

I'm talking about the single player missions and not even that far into them, maybe the 5th mission, but god damn it I just can't beat it lol.

Not relevant I know but when you talk about hard games, RPG's are really about a story that you're meant to play through, in fact guided through. I don't think they do hard.

But that mission on COH just has me baffled lol.

The only time you run out of chances is when you stop taking them.

Some great games mentioned in this thread. My 2cents would be Eye of the Beholder, some of the might and magic were tough in some places, Baldurs of course and lastly Wasteland & Ishar Trilogy on Atari ST :)

Enjoying this thread a lot. For me there really hasn't been anything I didn't walk through since the 90's. Modern rpg's like Dragons age.....Well challenging is one word I would not choose to describe them. (Not including either of the Souls games in that.   My votes would have to go to games like The Bards Tale (Whoever said graph paper for maps made me lol. I remember stealing some from school for just that reason), Icewind Dale, Fallout 1 and 2.  Eye of the beholder, Ultima IV and even text adventures like The Hobbit wich I remember playing on the BBC Micro. If you count roguelikes as true rpg's then Nethack and Adom have to be included. They make Dark Souls look like a run around in Goldshire..

I miss you Star Wars Galaxies...:(

Couple of RPGs that come to mind Wasteland -http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wasteland_%28video_game%29, and the first 3 Ultima games (stiff death penalities, loss of items). Wasteland is also abandonware as well, so if you want to download it go for it, http://www.abandonia.com/games/436/Wasteland. Of course you will need DOSBox http://www.dosbox.com/ to run Wasteland and the Ultima games. But have fun ;)

Persona 3 and Persona 4.

They are the only two RPGs that I have played that If I did not actaully use strategy that I would die.  Not just to bosses, but even regular encounters.

Honestly, I don't think there really is/was one...

Difficult fighting usually isn't what RPG players are looking for in a game (they focus on story, visuals, getting stronger etc.) so the developers don't really add difficulty options like it is common in action games, where you can play on ultra hard or whatever.

It has been mentioned a few times, but if you are looking for sadisticly hard then Demon souls / Dark soul. Real sence of acomplishment on these two.

There is more than just a death penalty that makes this game hard.

Combat requires some precision, and a very hands-on approach.  Hack and slash just plain wont work.  AI is frustratingly smart, including how they will time attacks near perfectly when you're in the middle of things.  One-on-one fights aren't always bad, but get another enemy or two involved and it can get rough.  It's all about juggling stamina so your guard doesn't break.  Once your guard breaks, you're as good as dead.  There are a lot of various character builds, and different ways to play your character.  I personally enjoyed finesse weapons and lighter armor, but I've also seem some cool 2-handed builds with heavy armor/shields.

As hard as Dark Souls was, I found myself loving the gameplay.  Bosses are some of the biggest challenges I've ever had in a game.  Literally.  They're freakin HUGE, and it's all about learning moves and avoiding certain ones while taking opportunities to attack at the right times.  One wrong move, and you're dead.

You just don't see these game often made and that I can give From Software credit for appreciating the classics.

How do you define "difficult?" In your own words, you seem to interchange "difficult" and "really hard."

Just because a person can "beat a game" does not mean it is not difficult. I think what you may be looking for is "impossible."

In Dragon Age:Origins, it took 4 or 5 tries to defeat the monster at the top of the tower to light the beacon in the very beginning. To me, that is "difficult." If I am reloading quite often, I'd say the game is difficult.

If you truly roleplay your not-so-smart fighter, he will die many times due to his not-so-smart decisions. Not many people do that, though.

Most RPGs I have played have difficult parts in them. I do not recall ever playing one where I just breezed through the whole game beginning to end. Maybe I'm just not as "pro" as you are...

Personally the only modern MMORPG trend that annoys me is the idea that MMOs need to be designed in a way to attract people who don't actually like MMOs. Which to me makes about as much sense as someone trying to figure out a way to get vegetarians to eat at their steakhouse.
