There is no gear treadmill according to GW1 players. All of the best looking stuff is coming from dungeons and Karma. So why trade my real money gems for in-game gold if it doesn't really buy you anything worthwhile?

I expect that even a single gem will cost a ton of gold, since it seems like most of the convenience type items are only available in the store, and people will tend to just use their gems there.

Do I have to buy gems with gold? Will I not be able to sell items and goods for gems and/or gold on the market? Also as a merchant if I am trying to get gems my goods might have a lower gem price compared to gold price. Also considering that the Gems have a real world curency attached to them it would make sense for Anet to allow us to purchase expansions with them.

Well, if they go all the way with this idea and with copying Eve, I'll also be able to sell my level 80 characters.  As an avid alt roller, I expect this to pay for all the diamonds I could ever want, including a second account with all conveniences, bank space, and character slots unlocked.

I mean, why not?  It's the logical progression of this concept.  It will hurt account selling RMTers, it will let people trade time for real life money, and if everything else being discussed is okay, why shouldn't this be okay, too?

I am convinced there is only one way to eliminate these grave evils, namely through the establishment of a socialist economy, accompanied by an educational system which would be oriented toward social goals.

Don't think you can actually turn gems back into real life money. Sounds like all you can do is buy stuff from their store with it. As for selling characters for gems if Anet makes a way to do that through their system it doesn't bother me.

Gold doesn't magically materialize in this system. With gems you can only buy other players' gold, aka gold that has already been earned by another player and already exists in the system. There will be no inflation as a result of gold > gem exchanges. It results in zero net gold change within the server.

Actually, there's a very high chance that using the "Gem Exchange" will take a small percentage of the gold transferred, which means that it will actually serve as yet another gold sink. Imagine that. You're actually helping the economy when you buy gold.

I agreee about the slots and vanity items but id be very surprised if they allowed to buy expansions with gems. Maybe adventure packs but im doubtful too. Its a business after all.

Hey, someone bought those gems from Anet. Why not allow us to buy expansions with 'em.

Exactly. Anytime you buy something with gems, that item was payed for in full by someone. If ArenaNet lets you buy expansions with gems, it's as though someone is buying an expansion pack for you in exchange for gold. It's a beautiful system because ArenaNet gets the same amount of money either way, and it serves as a small gold sink at the same time.

I never thought it that way. But now that I think about it...ArenaNet is genius :).

So if gold farming company funMMObunnygold.$$$ farms gold alot and then buys gems alot and then sells expansions alot.

a)is a good thing.

b)is a bad thing.

edit:i can imagine  there will be zounds of funMMObunnymonstagold.$$$ sites selling accounts with capped character slots and full expansions and zillions of gems and karma and gamers are not the winners in this case.

this is gold selling sites wet dream, they can milk players money in-game.

I don't see why.  I'm good at rolling and leveling alts and I have time to do it, why shouldn't I be able to trade those alts for diamonds so I can buy all the perks and conveniences?  People with money who don't like leveling can just buy my alts with diamonds.  Everyone is happy, right?

I'm being semi-sarcastic, by the way.  I do not like this cash=diamonds=gold system at all.  But if they are going to do it, why not sell characters, too?

because there is not enough reason to be maxed lvl that you would be able to sell them.

Well that would be my problem, then.  But I think you're wrong.  I think people will buy accounts in this game through illicit sources just as they do in other games.  I suggest Anet do as CCP did and allow characters to be sold lawfully.  Let's go all the way with this concept and see where it leads.

It will also be beneficial to other players for this form of RMT to be sanctioned, since a symbol by a character's name can be used to denote a recent sale to a new player.

I have a baby name book around here still somewhere, I guarantee my characters for sale will have tasteful, unique, and appropriate names, with no random number spew after them, which is more than can be said for most characters running around in MMOs.

They would have to take a pretty big risk and loss just to turn gems back into real world currency. We're talking turining real world dollars into pennies in this exchange you have come up with.

Gold does materialize, every time an enemy is killed actually.

And gems aren't a gold sink because they go to another player.

Without someplace gold can go to 'die', prices for everything, including gems, will inflate.

Making it harder and harder for anyone to get the gems they need without spending RL money.

Theres no risk,Anet is also making real money in the process, all the time, and they will keep gems prize as high as possible which means more profit.

and when prize  goes down they will introduce these new unique must have items you must have and gems prizes goes up.

and gold/account sellers will be more than happy.

But if 100000 gems are 1dollar and 100000 are enough to play for a year, then it is a different case, but i doubt that.

so if Anet can make money with gems then goldsellers can also and gamers will pay the bill.

edit: something that i learned from masterpiece Elite.

imagine if i buy all the gems there is available in the server when the prize is low ,what happens?

i really dont know the answer but i can imagine that i could make some nice real cash,so there is horrible scenario chance also that gold sellers can control the whole market.

There are gold sinks, though it's mostly for bad players that die a lot and people that like fast travel.

I think every mmo should do what CCP does and blizzard is going to do with the RMAH in Diablo3, if you can't stop the blackmarket, control it. It's safer for players, and it brings money back into development where it should be.

They would have to take a pretty big risk and loss just to turn gems back into real world currency. We're talking turining real world dollars into pennies in this exchange you have come up with.

No you seem to miss the point. Third party sites will take a large gem to real world currency loss in the exchange.

And gems aren't a gold sink because they go to another player.

Without someplace gold can go to 'die', prices for everything, including gems, will inflate.

Making it harder and harder for anyone to get the gems they need without spending RL money.

What blizzard is doing is completely different.  They do get a cut, but the bulk of the money changes hands between players.

Secondly, I bet there were dozens of GW2 fanboys who bashed D3 on these forums for their RMAH before this gems announcement.  And before it was known there was a cash shop, GW fanboys used to ridicule those as well.  There's no limit to how far back people will backpeddle just to keep the dream alive, when it's the backpeddling that destroys it.

Even the most fanatic GW2 fans need to realize that something is wrong:

If everything that can be bought with gold is worthless, then why would anyone sell gems for gold? It wouldn't make any sense. It doesn't matter if it is "character power" or "peacock power" that can be bought with gold, all that matters is that a significant part of the population finds it important enough to actually sell their gems for extra gold.

Keep in mind that you'll likely be working at less than minimum wage if you want to pay for character slots by farming in game gold.  I wouldn't be suprised if the final "value" of gold farming in game came out to $1 an hour or less.  After all, if everybody could just spend a few hours and have a character slot, nobody would be buying gems, and the value of gems would go up until people had to farm for longer.  Eventually it will reach an equalibrium, but I think that equalibrium will be somewhere around $1 an hour or less.

It's not that everything is worthless... it's that nothing is.

You may wish to be sitting down when this finally sinks in.

It won't have any greater effect on the economy than the usual gold farmers do. At least this way the money is going to the devs!

I agreee about the slots and vanity items but id be very surprised if they allowed to buy expansions with gems. Maybe adventure packs but im doubtful too. Its a business after all.

It doesn't matter for them because for you to get gems for gold someone has to buy those gems from ANet... So they don't care who spends the gems. ;) It's a win-win :P

Everything in game is bought with karma and/or gold ONLY... Everything in cash shop can be bought with gems ONLY...

Saying that gold is worthless in game is not correct. Trading gems which can be used only for cash shop for gold which can be used for items in game makes sence, but now it'll be harder for gold sellers to actually sell gold in a way.. :D
