Do you guys think that GW2 will have that epic RPG feel to it? I really wonder if the DE's will be as good as I hope they will be. But making dull quests be awesome and fun is not a easy job, not at all. I was kinda supprised when I heard that making a DE compared to a normal Quest, was only around three times as much work. But myself I don't really think that making a quest that says "Go kill ten centaurs" is a lot of job.(Yea just had to say it)

Back on topic, will the DE system really make the game world feel alive. I saw this video over at IGN and what I saw worries me. I do notice that the DE says to drive the centaurs away, but even so they are simply standing in a field not doing much.

Offcourse not all DE's will be world changers but if the majority of the DE's is like this I think the whole system may be a flop. We have seen DE's that have huge bosses/changing the world. But we have not seen alot of the events that lead up to that point. Is it really as fluid as we expect it to be and does it feel natural? Offcourse the system will be more fun and better that normal Quests, but will it be way more fun or A little more fun? I fear that after 50 levels or a third character the whole feeling of the awesome new DE system will feel like a grind, if they do not have enough of the challenging and epic battles for towns/cities.

Well, it's worth keeping in mind two of the major content types for this question.

With dynamic events, you're a soldier, a grunt amongst grunts. Often you're acting as basically the Tyrian police. (As an aside, that's why I'll be going with the The Vigil, because that's what their oragnisation is for.) You're going to be patrolling around, looking for trouble, and dealing with it as you find it. And every now and then you'll be called off to deal with bigger threats. It'll be a more organic affair than in MMOs, because instead of walking up to Mr. ! and asking him what's up with him, you'll have someone run up to you and tell you that their town is being attacked, and you can follow them back and actually see it being attacked. When stuff like that happens, it's up to you and other players to deal with it.

The other type of content is the personal storyline. This is yours and yours alone, and will often happen in instanced areas and it will feel like an RPG. It's the personal storyline that's designed to make you feel more like the singular hero, because stuff that happens in it is unique to you, not to the world in general. And the choices you make will be shown in a number of instanced locations, like the office of your race's representative, your home city quarter, and so on. You'll also have a journal which records your story as it goes along, so you'll be able to read back on all the things you've done.

So, yeah, it likely will have a completely different feel to it than a trad MMO. Will it feel like an RPG? I don't know, only time will tell. But the approach of this is just too different to anticipate or predict properly, really.

i think the personal story will go farther towards the RPG element than the DE's.  havent seen enough of those to make a conclusion one way or the other.  but the rest of the game looks good so one could assume that those are done well too.

That is because what you saw there isn't even a Dynamic Event but a Reknown Heart. Read Elisabeth's write-up on the 3 main forms of questing in Guild Wars 2, so that you won't be one of those that mistake a DE for a Heart.

Yeah, you'd think that by now people would be able to tell between what's an Event and what isn't. A little hint is the "NEW EVENT NEARBY" that pops up, only when there's an event.

Maybe ArenaNet should have "HEART" pop up, when you enter a Reknown Heart area.

The Reknown Hearts work a bit like standard MMO quests, nothing particularly exciting, but there something to do when the DE isn't around and keep players around the areas DEs spawn in.

I'd be more worried if stuff was just standing around in the actual DEs.  They could very well be flops, but they aren't the only content in GW2 at least so the game isn't really relying on the DEs solely to be the only form of entertainment you'll have in the game.

I think DE's lend themselves to minor but frequent content updates. If they manage to keep it fresh with new DE's constantly we could end up with an awesome experience. Also, the DE system is tailor made for them to let users create their own content, this would be my dream come true.

I wouldnt count on that. There will probably be new leveling content in any expansions if they release new classes though.

Idk, I have a feeling they will update the crap out of it for a while. As far as user made content, they already had a panel on how easy it is for them to create events. They just have to create an easy to use tool set and design a new world area around it.

The difference between centaurs waiting around and having a Dynamic Event telling you to drive them off vs. a static quest telling you to go kill ten centaurs is that in GW2 DEs, those centaurs will actually attack the settlement if they aren't killed and driven off! They won't just keep standing there 24/7, respawning every five minutes, continually threatening an attack that will never occur!

"Do you guys think that GW2 will have that epic RPG feel to it? "

No.

I don't think a mmorpg can do that after playing a dozen of them.

If I compare the dozen mmorpg's I played to for instance Oblivion or Fallout 3 and New Vegas they are laughablely unepic in comparison.

I think it will, absolutly.  Watching GW2 videos and knowing what they have in store for the gamer as well as the emphasis on making you want to explore (much like that of Skyrim and Bethesda's others) has given me vast hope on the capability that this game possess and in my opinion will live up too.

About a minute later, ther appears a veteran Centaur and the warrior is running and fighting for his life instead of making easy kills.

As much as i love this game, i don't think it is the "Epic rpg", yes it have really nice stuff like DE, awesome races, the conquer map, that are nice rpg features too, but the game is just to me an mmo, maybe an epic mmo. But to get the epic Rpg attached to it, i personally need things like exploration in a gigantic and extremely scary world, communities made by players in game, perma death, "realistic" class/skills/crafting mechanism if that make any sense, anyway something close to the old pen&paper, or Muds. But still GW2 design goes the right way and try to ally casual gameplay into a modern mmorpg vision, its just that most of the hardcore rpg feature are not casual at all, they usually need so much dedication because of the "realistic" aspect put into them like no insta port, so there is not much anyone can do, those type of games are so radically different i think, and i'm not sure you'll be able to match them any time soon. So ye i'll play my epic indy mmorpg i already play, and GW2 for what it is.
