People in MMORPG.com always argue or debate on a lot of different issues. It's not bad to have a healthy discussion, but sometimes, it goes to the point that one side wants to convince the other side to believe their perspective. The problem is that 90% of the time, it won't happen. It is also common to see disagreements between people who like a certain game versus people who don't.

The reason is simple. Everyone has his or her opinion, and his or her likes and dislikes. An MMORPG, no matter how good or polished it is, can never satisfy everyone. I personally don't care about how my character looks, and I'm sure some people also don't. But there are also people who are very keen about it. Some people don't read quests, but I do because I care about the story.

As such, is there really a point to argue about these kinds of things? Is there also enough reason to make a thread just to complain about a game that one didn't like?

A game cannot satisfy everyone because of different preferences. It is impossible to be everything for everyone. When a game tries to be everything for everyone, it will end up being mediocre.

So if a thread doesn't change anyone's opinion, that makes it worthless?

Where are you going with this?  Do you want to create a list of  banned topics because people don't agree?

I agree.

Just because someone's opinon is unchanging, doesn't mean that there cannot be entertainment in the discussion of the differing opinons.

Errr... both of you are misunderstanding me.

I just observed that some people try too much in convincing other people to change their views. Some people also complain a lot about this or that game, or about the industry as a whole.

The thing is, like I said, we all have different preferences. As such, there's very little point trying to convince each other to believe the contrary. Complaining or reminiscing also won't do anything good. Not because one did not like a game, nobody else does. There are lots of other games out there so there's no need to ask a game to have this kind of feature, if it wasn't intended to have that feature in the first place. Now if there isn't any game that meets someone's extremely high standards, then I guess a genre shift would be good.

" It's not bad to have a healthy discussion, but sometimes, it goes to the point that one side wants to convince the other side to believe their perspective. "

In the context of your post, 'discussion' is equivalent to 'debate'.  So, basically, you are attempting to have a debate on whether people should or should not debate.  Here are a couple adjectives to describe your post: Ironic;  Paradoxical;  Inconsistent in terms.  It's not bad to debate, but sometimes it goes to the point where people are attempting to debate, is basically what you are saying, which is nonsensical.

de·bate

  [dih-beyt]  Show IPA noun, verb, -bat·ed, -bat·ing.

noun
1.
a discussion, as of a public question in an assembly, involving opposing viewpoints: a debate in the Senate on farmprice supports.
2.
a formal contest in which the affirmative and negative sidesof a proposition are advocated by opposing speakers.
3.
deliberation; consideration.
4.
Archaic strife; contention.
verb (used without object)
5.
to engage in argument or discussion, as in a legislative orpublic assembly: When we left, the men were still debating.
6.
to participate in a formal debate.
7.
to deliberate; consider: I debated with myself whether to tellthem the truth or not.
8.
Obsolete to fight; quarrel.

pmsl at zytin. Very eloquently put. I mean the whole point of this forum is to debate and discuss the games of this very genre. I don't understand the point the op is trying to make. I've learned a lot about certain mmo's through these very debates. I'm interested in a fellow gamers opinion on certain titles. Yes, i might not agree, but it gives me an insight into what others believe, and could actually be an indication of what direction the genre is taking, without having to try every title.

the first banned topic should be "What topics should be banned?"

Tolerance is the only thing lacking on these forums. A touch of honesty and modesty wouldn't hurt either.

I agree with it's probably a pretty rare occurance that minds are changed by reading debate on the forums, but it doesn't make it pointless.   This site and these forums are frequented by developers, and while they seldem post, I have no doubt that they do read.   A good debate where people argue various points of view on features and gameplay mechanics can be a valueable tool for them to help decide what approaches will garner what reactions from players.

There are also a lot of people who lurk in the shadows who sit on the fence trying to decide if they want to buy a certain game.  These debates can often time prove to be useful for people trying to determine if they want to buy a partciular game or not.   Often times games will sensor or moderate their official forums heavy-handedly, where here people can see both sides of the arguement without moderators trying sensor negativity.

MMO sandbox games are as exciting as watching paint dry.

That is good in theory, but as we see on these forums you got a group of folks totally drowning out the others. A person visiting here would think sandboxes are actually popular. A few weeks of visiting though would show them it is simply the same ones going on and on.

Asking Devs to make AAA sandbox titles is like trying to get fine dining on a McDonalds dollar menu budget.

You know this is common sense but half the people on here won't care when they were computer nerds in school opinions often meant squat now here they can flaunt there views in an imperialistic manner because many of the normal indiccators don't exist on the internet.

In a perfect world people wouldn't criticize others simply for enjoying a game they don't likeor feel the need to bury anything that they don't see as made for then but we don't live in a perfect world and the internet is only an exaggerated view of what we see in real life.
