Monumental is a bit of an overstatement don't you think?

Climbing can be used for many purpose though. Finding a safe place to go to log off, since characters always stay existant in TTS, accessing areas you otherwise couldn't, just shortening travel distances in some cases, its also useful for combat, when raiding lairs you can get over the walls and so forth.

TTS has no attributes. Just skill training. Different kinds of climbing, ice, stone, wood, dirt, and so forth require a different climbing subskill. So you have climbing and you get exp for that from all climbing and then you have substance specific skills that you only get and benefit from depending on what you are climbing.

As far as gradients are concerned, I don't know how to manage that really. You would have to test the gradient on the fly I think. Its probably possible though, maybe just check an angle? I dunno.

Being an explorer kind of player, climbing would be good. Since you have the ropes incorporated already, what about swinging?

Personally the only modern MMORPG trend that annoys me is the idea that MMOs need to be designed in a way to attract people who don't actually like MMOs. Which to me makes about as much sense as someone trying to figure out a way to get vegetarians to eat at their steakhouse.

Oh god swinging. I mean, I guess you can do swinging? Probably not a priority feature though.

I love the swimming in Darkfall you can swim anywhere no limits and with sharks or other dangerous sea monters who can attack you. Also travel by raft is awesome in Darkfall.

No ocean swimming, as that is ridiculous. You can use swimming to travel across some rivers based on skill level vs current though. You can do some limited swimming in ocean, like what a normal human can do, maybe really high level can do swimming across say, english channel. I am thinking of some sort of swimming stamina, so if you run out you have to sit and float or something or swim slower or not swim that long and as swimming goes up you get more stamina.

mountains are used to block path or slow down the pace at wich someone can explore ... Mounts are made to fasten the rate at wich you can progress and explore , thus mountain climbing can be seen as using a mount to go faster around objectives .

Cool idea especially if it requires equipment and such to be possible , similarly a mount system with different kind of saddle/food/horseshoe could be great way to implement a more varied approach than the "buy this skill and off you go see you back in 20 level "kind of mmorpg.

Based on your description of its scope and related features, it's definitely a major feature item for any MMO.

Very cool ideas. If the uses provide significant enough return for the amount of investment necessary to build and maintain climbing as you describe it, then definitely go for it.

Climbing was always useful in DnD to lay-up a pre-planned trap/throw off a pursuit.

A. Climb up cliff

B. Chasers climb up

C. Roll boulder off ledge!

Agree, climbing can be great, it's especially good in platformers too. The GW2 vid of "climbing" up a tower to explore was cool so real climbing x10?!

I would say that reducing chances of offline death by probably 75%(the % of creatures who cannot fly or use ranged attacks during the first few months to a year of the game) is pretty substantial. Also generally shortening travel. Of course we can't know how it will actually play out in a beta test or something until we test it.

I demand a video of this. I have not see a climbing vid. I am not suprised though. GW has really pushed towards my ideal game with GW2. If only they had gone all the way so I wouldn't have to attempt to make a game myself. Maybe GW3 will go far enough? :P

i've seen the gw2 video but it's the same exact as tera climbing ... it's objective based as in you climb do stuff up there and jump back down.

I presume you can only climb in designated areas ala EQ 2?

Are you gonig to have an infinite world? Are you going to generate terrain on the fly forever? That would make a boring random world, even if you have the technology to do so.

I like the idea of climbing but I think it is difficult to know exactly what to do with it.

For example, if you have incline that requires a given level/percentage then what happens to players that have not invested time in climbing. Since possibly not everyone will have the skill you would be kind of limited into what you can put at the top of the climb. Otherwise, if the skill is required then everyone would be forced to train it.

Still, I don't want to knock back your idea as it could be a cool thing. Perhaps you could allow players to have base skils in running, swimming, horse riding, climbing etc. They can then develop these skills further to be quicker in their chosen mode of transport.

I love the thought of chasing someone in PvP where I have a faster running skill, but they have a better climbing hill and head straight for the nearby cliff to get away.

On a separate note, one of the things I loved about Xsyon was that there were no invisible walls. OK there were eventually some cliffs you could not climb but this was based only on the angle of incline. Strangely, I had a lot of fun in that game actually trying to climb 'impossible' ascents (like the one on the mysterious island in the lake). It was interesting to be forced to actually evaluate the terrain and plan a route up that could work. This did not involve a given skill but was actually in a way close to how climbing really is (simplified, of course).

Well there is only a chance to fall. You can climb anything at any skill level. You may have to keep trying and have lots of pitons or something. Also its a sandbox so you don't HAVE to climb anything. Also you could do a route plan thing based on inclines if you don't have the skills to go straight up. Seems fine to me. Since climbing is actually a very physical sport, I suspect Xyson made it like a puzzle? Pick the easiest inclines or something.

You could also have a group bonus to climbing. So you could either pick a group leader or have 10-20% of the difference between the best climber and each other climber in the group added on to that member.  Having a good lead climber in real life is important so putting that in the game would be nice.

You may also have something like really good climbers with good stonework skills carving some extra convex spaces into the cliff, lowering the overall grade. This was actually done by some native americans in places like mesa verde. And eventually in areas really near a city you would probably eventually have stairs and inner tubes up mountains. Because you can change the world in permanent ways like that in TTS.

I think I will incorporate all these ideas from this post into the game. I like them a lot. Encouraging crafting and grouping are always plusses in my eyes.

GW2 was initially intended to have climbing but early on discarded it. Seems this particular exploration challenge might have been inspired by it... it at least uses the (-y,+y) axis v dramatically:
